1885036992London: John Van Voorst 1885. Book. Illus. by Keulemans J. G.; Prout Victor. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo. A very good copy. Pp. 12 xviii 224 plus "List of Subscribers to The Large Paper Edition" at the rear; fold out map to the front numerous black and white plates and two hand-coloured plates with tissue guards by Keulemans. Publisher's attractive green cloth gilt and black-stamped decoration and title. Binding very good inconspicuously rebacked. Contents clean and tight attractive armorial bookplate belonging to William Henry Radcliffe Saunders designed by Johnson Graham. William Henry Radcliffe Saunders Major of the East Surrey Regiment. A very good first edition copy. Bibliographic note: it is only the large paper edition which has the list of subscribers at the back; this lists 194 names but several of these subscribed to two or more copies bringing the total to 208 so one can assume that the print run of the LP edition was probably less than 250. The standard edition has external dimensions of 187 x 130mm and the large paper external dimensions of 220 x 145mm. The latter is clearly the superior of the two particularly evident with the plates that are not pinched to edges as they are in the standard state. Mullens and Swann mention a large paper copy but Ballance does not. John Van Voorst Hardcover
