N.d. 1849 Presumed first editon. 2 engraved frontis engraved title 78 2. Decorated capitals and small wood engravings in the text. A scarce mid-19th century chldren's book with moralistic tales; in the title page a boy finds another young boy barefoot and sheltering under a hedge in snow covered countryside--his name is Beppo he came from Italy via England had some little animals to display in order to beg food but the last of them has died: "Are your pretty mice dead" "Yes; and I would like to be the same." His is taken home to shelter with the first boy's family. Tight some spotting to the covers nd more so to the spine strip; occasional staining to a few of the leaves. Original ownership signature and place notation of "Brooklyn L.I." Ornate presentation bookplate front pastedown "Presented by the Church of The Messiah Christmas 1865". Illustrated hand drawn armorial book plate without a name located on the front paste down. The front cover is detached. <br /> <br /> Album consists of multicolored paper containing 119 photographs plus a few paper items. Most of the pictures are of women with a variety of picture types including studio miniature cards CDV's silver gelatin prints etc. Some of the photographs show women playing stringed instruments one wearing a red cross badge one picture of lady on a horse next to a business and others wearing outfits similar to nuns. Some of the small photographs are from Brussels. A few of the pictures are dated 1906. Album also includes a page of clippings in the German language some photographs of soldiers and non uniformed men and old photo card scenes of ancient Athens and Constantinople. A typed invitation is pasted down inside from "Lieut. Colonel H.R. Hunt D.S.O. and Officers The 25th Punjabis request the pleasure of the company of Miss Mitchell at dinner on Saturday the 19th June at 8 p.m." dated 9-6-1920. No loose items. Several empty colored paper pages in back. From wikipedia:<br /> <br /> In 1911 the 25th Punjabis moved to Hong Kong to protect British interests following the Chinese Revolution of 1911. On the outbreak of the First World War the regiment returned from Hong Kong to India. In December 1917 it moved to Mesopotamia as part of the 54th Indian Brigade 18th Indian Division. In September 1918 the 25th Punjabis moved to Salonika in Greece and then to Turkey as part of the Allied occupation forces. It returned to India in 1921. The regiment raised a second battalion on 1 November 1917. The 2/25th Punjabis served in the Third Afghan War of 1919. The battalion was disbanded in 1922.2. unknown

Within the borders of Montana Idaho and Wyoming several Indian Reservations are highlighted including those for the Flat Head Crow and Blackfeet tribes. Manuscript writing on both sides of paper signed in manuscript Wm. Mitchell Referee N. Y. May 19th 1863. Document from a court case involving the American Guano Company V. United States Guano Company and the rights to mine guano on two remote Pacific Ocean Islands. From a May 1865 New York Times article: "This was an action brought to test the title to a guano island in the Pacific Ocean and to forbid the defendants from procuring any of the guano on the island." A second Island Baker Island was also litigated. The dispute dated to 1856 based upon an Act of Congress Unites States Guano Islands Act which authorized the President of the United States: 1. To assert the Jurisdiction of the United States over any guano island which might have been or should thereafter be discovered by any of its citizens; and 2. To confer upon the discoverer or his assigns the exclusive right to the guano upon such islands. In January 1859 the United States Guano Company made contracts to mine and sell Guano deposits on the two islands only to find men from the American Guano Company already occupying the islands. According to a Wiki page on Jarvis Island the American Guano Company ultimately mined guano for 20 years shipping the product to the Unites States for fertilizer. Names included in this document include Alfred Benson the President of the American Guano Company plus the surnames Lucas Baker Taylor Turner Russell and Roberts. Alfred Benson's son also played a role. The United States Guano Islands Act is still on the books just in case you sail upon an unknown island piled high in guano--you can legally seize the island as a United States Possession. ; 2 pp . unknown books
