1872124Philadelphia: Mitchell S. Augustus 1872. 11 x 13 3/4 Inches. Very good. This map was created in the year after the October 1871 Chicago Fire. The burnt district has been laid out within the hand coloring scheme. As such it represents an easy appearance of the delineation within the production of an atlas. Shows streets notable buildings parks railroads etc. Unlike most maps of Philadelphia from the period this map depicts the regions west of the Schuylkill River as far west as Millbourne and Cobbs Creek. The map is in very good condition with minor toning along edges and along centerfold. Dated and copyrighted. Samuel Augustus Mitchell Sr. 1792-1868 was one of the leaders in American cartography of the 19th century and pioneered the conversion of engraved map plates to more affordable lithographic plates. Rivers and cities are labeled. Features two insets one of Paraguay and the other showing Environs of Rio Janiero. Both insets also show major roads. Overall this is an excellent copy of this map with slight toning to margins not affecting the image. One leaf of adverts to the front and three pages of adverts to the rear. Written by Donald Grant Mitchell better known under his pseudonym Ik Marvel. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities with a small chip and a repair to the tail of the spine. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Very light rubbing to the joints. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Author's inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound.
