ANNOTATION: William Crate. 1 JOHN ISAAC THORNYCROFT 1843 - 1928; British engineer and marine architect who built first purpose-built torpedo boats for the British Royal Navy. He built his first steam launch the Nautilus when he was 19 years old and went on to establish the Thornycroft Boatbuilding Yards in Chiswick on the River Thames in 1864. Renowned for speed and fine lines he constantly experimented with hull shape and optimum propeller design. In 1873 he built the steam-powered spar torpedo boat Gitana for the Norwegian government. This was the first ever purpose-built torpedo boat which was used as a model for the Lightning in 1877 the first of Thornycrofts many commissions for the British Royal Navy. Thornycroft was knighted in 1901. In the twentieth century Thornycrofts company turned its focus to the design and manufacture of automobiles but Thornycroft himself continued to innovate in motor boat design. He created Coastal Motor Boats for the Royal Navy during World War I and supplied them with Motor Torpedo Boats and landing craft in World War I. 2 BLANCHE COULES THORNYCROFT 1873-1950: British naval architect. Not formally recognised in her lifetime. Born in 1873 in Hammersmith into the Thornycroft family daughter of Blanche Ada née Coules 1846-1936 and John Isaac Thornycroft. Her uncle was the sculptor Sir Hamo Thornycroft. It is now acknowledged that she made an unsung contribution to her fathers business. Trained in the same way as an apprentice she was known as her fathers assistant and was regarded as the maths expert in the business. The Thornycroft family home in Bembridge had a model ship testing facility in its grounds built in 1884 known as The Lilypond and used for complex testing of model ships until 1900. Blanches monographed notebooks record her test notes from 1907 until 1939 along with the ship tank models used in her engineering calculations are held at the Classic Boat Museum in East Cowes. These models were the basis for the development of Skimmers racing motor boats which later evolved into Coastal Motor Boats. Other models tested ideas for Acasta and Acheron Class Destroyers motor torpedo boats RAF Rescue Launches as well as RNLI Lifeboats. Blanche became the first lady-member to be admitted to The Royal Institute of Naval Architects in 1917. 3 John Lord; married Elizabeth Crate in 1813 at Hampshire Cross Hants presumably daughter of William Crate No link has currently been established between the Lords and the Thornycrofts. 173389311London: W. Dickenson in Witch Street 1733. First Edition. Folio. 32.5cm. Disbound with slight residual crust of old calf to spine region. 18pp. Some old ink spots to title page which effectively comprises the front wrap strong and durable toning to the extremities of both outer wraps and a little internal thumbing otherwise clean and fresh woodcut head and tailpieces luxuriously wide margins. A very good long disbound example of a well-aimed piece of 18th century satire.

A vastly Popean excoriating satire of the Whig government of the 1830's under Robert Walpole James Ralph William Stanhope as Secretary of State George Byng as First Lord of The Admiralty and a host of other aristocratic pillars of the British aristocratic system. Written in full flow as faux-Pope Whitehead with full reference to The Dunciad and wielding the righteous wrath of a breakfast table diplomat under full sail tears into the sitting government and bemoans with Pope how nothing has changed since the last crop of dunces. A successful part II was published in the same year and the two are often found bound together this copy comprises only part I. Whitehead's uncanny ability to ape Popean epic actually made him something of a living during the 1830's-40's allowing him to pen political and social satire like a Temu Alexander Pope but available at Witch Street prices. Foxon gives priority to this one which also contains 24 lines eliminated in the others. This was the poem that Whitehead sold for an advance of ten guineas provoking Johnson to demand the same for London in 1738.
