This work is a satire on Dr Robert Bragge who is given the titular character's name 'Dr Robert Bonhout'. Dr Bragge was an important figure in the art market during the eighteenth century and has been regarded as one of the first examples in England of the gentleman-connoisseur-dealer. He became a popular figure in society and held numerous auctions throughout the mid 1700s. This publication was issued the year after his death and focuses on Bragge's gluttony and his wife's parsimony. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece.Collated complete. Baskerville was an innovative type designer and printer. His typefaces were greatly admired by Benjamin Franklin. The Baskerville type is regarded as a transitional serif typeface intended as a refinement of the old-style typefaces of the period such as Calson. With 'Price Five Shillings unbound' to the title page. ESTC citation number T87220. Collated complete.A mid-eighteenth century edition of the common prayer and psalms published after a long period of taunt religious turmoil in England.'The Whole Book of Psalms' collected into English metre by Thomas Sternhold John Hopkins and others. An extremely scarce political pamphlet from 1731 written anonymously and regarded as attacking the Prime Minister Robert Walpole. The first and only edition of this work. Written anonymously and purtporting to be a speech given by 'The Grand Seignior to his Janizaries'. This work uses many forms of rhetoric to discuss war and the role of a 'Sovereign Judge' in a satirical manner. Walpole's own foreign policy was to avoid wars so that he could lower taxes. With a frontispiece of a Turkish infantryman. Walpole was the first British Prime Minister and held the position for twenty years. This pamphlet was published in 1731 and has been regarded by critics to be an attack on Walpole with the ESTC notes on this work support this view. Walpole had many enemies who were prominent in the literary scene such as John Gay Jonathan Swift Alexander Pope Henry Fielding and Samuel Johnson. With only one entry of this work in the ESTC. no. T106325. Pamphlets became a powerful source of strife in the seventeenth and eighteenth century with dozens being published about each any every political moral or social situation. They were often printed anonymously providing a sense of protecting for the person writing it. Disbound without both boards but with evidence of having been previously bound. Externally generally smart. Light bumping to the extremities. Small contemporary ink inscription to the head of first page. Internally firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to the edges. 1705792L1Bath: From My Shop in Bath 1705. First edition. Disbound. Good. 7" by 4.5" . None. A very scarce eighteenth century pamphlet defending the healing properties of the water in Bath to one Dr Radcliffe of Tunbridge Wells. ESTC reference no: T62772.In this letter the anonymous author appeals to Radcliffe who is an 'enemy to our Bath-waters' as he vilifies them 'as good for little or nothing'. In the pamphlet the author addresses rumours that Radcliffe the physician to George of Denmark planned to poison the waters of Bath with a toad. This rumour has become a part of the legend of Beau Nash of Bath who was said to have calmed people's fears claiming he could neutralise the toad's poison with music which resulted in him raising money for an orchestra to play at the baths. The author tells Dr Radcliffe that he needs to stop speaking ill of the waters in Bath as it was once his favourite 'Tunbridg has been your Favourite formerly next Bath and then Tunbridg again; which argues you have much more fancy than judgement'. This work charges that criticism of George II strengthens the Pretender's James Stuart cause. Two editions of this work appeared in this year by the same publisher. This work is a copy of ESTC no. N24599 and has the ornament on the title page of a face flanked by two cupids. There was another edition of 1744 issued by J Roberts and another copy printed in Dublin for Joshua Kinnier. This edition is closely cropped to the bottom edge in some places affecting the occasional catch-word and printer's signature mark. The author of this work is unknown. To the entry for the 1745 edition on the ESTC it is noted that there is a manuscript note 'By Mr. Gordon'. In paper wraps. Externally generally smart. Loss to the paper wraps at the head of front wrap. Minor chipping to the extremities. Several light tidemarks to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound.
