Vittima delle repressioni staliniste, Charents è stato dapprima un rivoluzionario a fianco dei bolscevichi, e poi un anti-rivoluzionario, disilluso da quello stesso partito comunista che aveva inizialmente appoggiato. La parabola della sua breve vita è ripercorsa, in questo intenso racconto, attraverso lettere, testimonianze dirette e opere, che mostrano il temperamento di uno dei più grandi esponenti della letteratura armena di tutti i tempi.
