18TH Century engraving, measuring approximately 14" x 10, " Publish'd Feb 27, 1799. A British Jew (often generically referred to as Moses) shown on the road to Hackney. As the Sign pointed in the opposite direction is for Isling, this scene may be referring to the to the movement of wealthy Jews, "Moses, " from Isling, a wealthy area in decline in the late 18th Century, to Hackney, to which many prominent Jews were moving at the time (includsing, for example, members of the Montefiore family) . The signpost in the image indicates that both travelers are headed toward Hackney. Stamford Hill [in Hackney] had many eminent Jewish residents, including the Montefiore family. Italian-born Moses Vita Montefiore (died 1789) was living there in 1763. His son Joseph (died 1804) married Rachel Mocatta, and his grandson Abraham Montefiore (died 1824) married Henrietta whose father, the financier Nathan Meyer Rothschild, lived near the modern Colberg Place from 1818 to 1835. The Montefiores' property a little further south was to be transformed by Abraham's grandson, Claude Montefiore, into Montefiore House school. Over 200 years later, Stamford Hill has the largest concentration of Haredi Jews in Europe. (Wikipedia, 2017) . The image is identified in the Catalogue of Political and Personal Satires preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, by Mary Dorothy George, in vol. 5, as no. 6339 (printed in 1783; this a slightly later imprint from 1799) . She describes the image as depicting A stout, complacent-looking man rides a small horse in profile to the left..." The engraving shows the rotund Jew followed by a smiling Black manservant, in three-cornered hat, also on horseback. A few mild creases, light toning, small tears to outer corner of wide left margin, not coming close to image. Very Good Condition. (PAINT-2-7A)

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original illustrated and decorative wrappers. Minor wear on extremities of cover. Partly uncut and untrimmed. Otherwise a very good copy. 12mo. (16 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 78 p. Hegira: 1305 = Gregorian: 1888. Serie: Kütüphane-i Ebüzziya, Aded: 66. First and only edition of this first and earliest antisemitic book in Turkish literature. "It was the first work that carried the traces of antisemitic discourse towards the Jewish people in the Ottomans" (Özkul, Çomak, Uzun). Ebüzziya Tevfik, who raised questions such as "why the Jews do not have a homeland", "why they are not moral" and "why they were exiled throughout history", and discussed these in the first two chapters of his book, is in search of a solution to the "Jewish question" in the final chapter despite taking such a harsh stance in advance. Tevfik was a journalist and writer who started in the path of journalism after having worked as a civil servant for a brief time. He published the newspapers Ibret, Hadika, and Sirac (1873) (1873) with Namik Kemal. Ebüzziya Tevfik, who was a member of the Young Ottoman Association, was exiled to Rhodes together with Ahmet Mithat Efendi after the incidents that arose following Namik Kemal's 'Vatan Yahut Silistre' (Country or Boatswain's Pipe) play in 1873. He returned to Istanbul after the death of Sultan Abdülaziz. He did research in the area of publishing in Vienna where he lived during the rule of Abdülhamid. He established the Ebüzziya Publishing House after his return to Turkey and published the books of the famous writers of the time such as Namik Kemal, Ziya Pasa, Sinasi, Ahmet Rasim, Recaizade Ekrem, and Muallim Naci. He published 'Mecmua-i Ebuzziya' (1880). He was exiled to Konya in 1890 by the Abdülhamit administration on the grounds that he wasn't suitable for civil service. He was elected as Antalya parliamentary deputy (1908) to the parliament that was formed on the announcement of the Second Constitutional Monarchy. Ebüzziya Tevfik, who prepared compilations and translations on anthologies, theater plays, and memoirs, is known more for his contributions to publishing and as a famous editor of the time than as a writer. This booklet is in very good condition.6) Accompanying these items is a printed cover letter, partly toned, dated September 1944, urging the recipient to use the stamps on the backs of envelopes to draw attention to the ongoing Holocaust, and asking for donations to support the Committee's work. "The Emergency Committee welcomes this opportunity to reproduce the inspiring creations of the virile pen and the creative heart of Arthur Szyk, in the form of Poster Stamps. The Committee hopes that generous support in contributions for and distributions of these Poster Stamps, will be forthcoming from the American people, to enable it to carry on its emergency mission for the rescue of some four million martyred humans. In the final volume, Ketuvim, four leaves show a touch of outer margin loss, with an additional seven leaves showing substantial margin loss but touching only a letter or two of text. Thirteen leaves show enough margin loss that text is affected though never more than the outer portion of the top six lines of any leaf. Three leaves with margin notes are affected. Margin notes predate the 18th century binding and in many cases appear to have suffered some loss with trimming and rebinding in the 18th Century. 16th Century rag paper and internal binding remain very nice. Beautiful 18th Century British binding with leather spine label and armorial bookplate on front pastedown remain outstanding. Very Good Condition thus. No copies appearing at auction in the last 25 years. Rare and important, with significant period marginalia. (KH-10-7)
