Original black cloth boards. 10 x 12.5 inches. 48 pages. Photographs from inside dormitory rooms show a 1906 calendar and ephemera from other local colleges such as Harvard University; in one image the girls visit nearby Wellesley MA. Original owner Leila Hoffman. Founded in 1851 as the Auburndale Female Seminary Lasell was the first two-year college for women in the country at a time when a woman's place was considered to be in the home not in the classroom. Lasell was renowned as an academically rigorous institution and prestigious school with a highly scientific approach to domestic work art and music. As an innovative institution known for a radical approach to women's education at the time Lasell also administered the Harvard exams and offered law courses for women. In 1932 Lasell officially became Lasell Junior College and in 1989 the school was chartered as a four-year institution Lasell College. In 1997 Lasell became co-educational and opened its doors to men. The campus is situated in suburban Newton Massachusetts eight miles from downtown Boston. In very good condition. unknown books

Some creasing and a few small open tears to edges. Two sheets reinforced with document tape on versos. A few stains to "Made-Up Saleslady." Pencil signatures of Clementine Allen to rectos of "Gossiping Wash-Lady" and "Made-Up Saleslady" plus pencil inscription on verso of the former "To Clementine from Lloyd 1895" and date 1895 on verso of the latter. A very good set of these fragile "vinegar valentines." These insulting valentines commonly referred to as vinegar valentines or penny dreadfuls sharing the nickname with Victorian-era dime novels first appeared in the 1840s and maintained a prominent place in pop culture well into the twentieth century. They were produced from the cheapest paper and were designed to be sent anonymously; the inscriptions in the present set however beg the question of whether Clementine sent a vinegar valentine to Lloyd in return. Vinegar valentines were "designed to caricature the shortcomings of the recipient and encapsulate the spirit of the Victorian era…During the 1920s and 1930s they were very popular among schoolboys who were more than happy to give their cranky teacher their grouchy neighbor and bullish schoolgirls. Every trade or profession was represented in terms far from flattering including politicians…Vinegar valentines reflected the spirit of the times between the late 1800s to 1920s with rising taxes wartime and the women's suffrage movement."

Oval bust portrait in profile Cheney facing left hair parted and drawn into a low chignon; wearing a dark dress with decorative buttons and a white lace collar. Born in Boston in 1824 Cheney was closely associated with the Transcendentalist and reform circles of mid-nineteenth century New England. As a young woman she attended Margaret Fuller’s conversation classes and moved within the intellectual orbit of Ralph Waldo Emerson Theodore Parker Bronson Alcott and other Unitarian and reform leaders. A committed abolitionist she supported antislavery efforts before the Civil War and during the war worked with Freedmen’s aid organizations promoting education for formerly enslaved people and assisting Black regiments.<br /> <br /> Cheney was instrumental in advancing women’s professional education in Boston helping to found the Boston School of Design for Women and supporting the New England Hospital for Women and Children associated with the Woman’s Medical College of Boston. She served as president of the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association in 1879 and remained active in organized suffrage work thereafter. A prolific author she published works on religion education and reform including Life of Louisa M. Alcott 1889 reflecting her long friendship with the Alcott family.<br /> <br /> A Boston studio portrait of a central figure in nineteenth-century abolitionist educational and suffrage networks. In the first dated April 19 and May 2 1828 it is decreed that the widows of first aides shall receive the Montepio corresponding to the widows of major sergeants. The Montepio in Mexico was a public pension and assistance fund for the families of state servants especially military personnel -- a precursor of modern social security systems. In tjhe second decree dated May 7 1828 a more specific case is addressed: "The fault committed by the citizen Hermenegildo Mancebo in contracting marriage without license is dispensed. his widow and daughters remaining entitled to the Montepío that corresponds to them. unknown

The story is presented as a supernatural vision that the Texas high school student experienced. "My mind wandered back to old Goree High School and the buoyant hearts it held in 1924-'25. Suddenly I caught sight of a flower. 'Why there's our class flower' I almost shouted. Eagerly I plucked it and tested its fragrance. The odor seemed to give me a magic power. I examined one petal closely and a strange vision stole over me. When I regained my senses I was in a crowded New York Department Store.'Oh I'm head of the ladies glove department in this joint' yawned Gladys after our greetings.Next I found myself in a little West Texas town standing in front of a small and dingy office which bore the label of "Sheriff".the Sheriff was a young women of twenty who greeted me.and she told me that Franklin White was Mayor of the town while Norine was his private secretary.As I sat talking with my two friends their faces seemed suddenly to grow dim and to fade from my sight. A moment later I found myself back int eh little retreat with only the naked stalk of our class flower remaining."<br/><br/>Recordings of the Class Motto "Out of school life into life's school." First edition of this fascinating biography of Lola Montez 1821-1861 -- i.e. Elizabeth Rosanna Gilbert courtesan dancer and also believed to have been the major inspiration for Arthur Conan Doyle’s Irene Adler and the “Scandal in Bohemia.†After nearly bringing down the government of Bavaria and King Ludwig I by living with him as her mistress with the newly granted title Countess of Landsfield and as unofficial consort wielded political power urging for reform which the 1848 Revolutions swept away and she fled. Later bigamously marrying Cornet George Heald in 1849 she began her very successful career as dancer during the California Gold Rush although she never trained to dance and married for 2 weeks Pat Hull California Newspaperman in Grass Valley. She is perhaps best remembered for tutoring the famed Lotta Crabtree dancer and acting sensation from Grass Valley. This volume also contains her lectures on Beautiful Women Gallantry Heroines of History Comic Aspects of Love Wits & Women of Paris and Romanticism which Montez used to challenge societal norms about the roles of women in society and instead of cosmetics recommended that women pursue temperance exercise and cleanliness. This remarkable scrapbook preserves and documents the many different activities meetings conferences banquets and programs by Vice President and President Mabel Palmer for the Eugene Professional and Business Women’s Club. Established initially during World War I the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs helped to organize and direct the resources of professional American women and were the first organization to focus on working women’s issues and repeal and prohibit legislation across America denying jobs to married women and end the legality of favoring young unmarried women for cheap labor. Palmer 1906-1983 during her tenure from 1941-1942 helped the Eugene BPW the largest in Oregon to focus on defense and home front war activities. As evidenced by the many clippings printed programs and in-house journal publications within the scrapbook the Eugene club donated money to the Salvation Army raised funds for the benefit of Chinese Nurses sponsored lectures on promoting American Democracy and protecting against Nazi sympathizers raised funds for War Bonds and the Red Cross and even organized fashion show fundraisers. There are menus and souvenir brochures from the BPW conference at Eugene in 1941 the Timberline Conference held in Sept. 1940 sponsored programs such as “Strengthen Democracy in our Town†“Our Country in a War Torn World†“Training for Defense†and many others. Very Good Turkish Archive of documents of (Margot Dernbach, later Uzmay) an emigrated woman from Nazi Germany to Turkey; of the wife of Kutlu Oguz Hakki Uzmay who was the son of the Turkish politician and sociologist Ismail Hakki Uzmay (1881-1950), and brother of Afet Inan (1908-1985). This collection contains sixteen documents: Six insured employment certificates, a health certificate of herself including her son Can Uzmay and her husband Kutlu Oguz Hakki Uzmay prepared in 1972, a tax card prepared in 1965, two payment certificates from the German Hospital in 1975, a tax registration slip prepared in 1965. Some documents are with a photograph of Margarete Uzmay; and Nursing certificate prepared by the General Nursing Council for England & Wales in 1959, two b/w photographs, a "certified copy of an entry of marriage act, 1949" in 1963, a student report prepared by "Volksschule" in Niedermendiz in Germany, in 1942 in the name of Margot Dernbach. One document is in German, one is in English; all the others are in Modern Turkish. This fine archive of Margaret Dernbach [Uzmay], who emigrated from Nazi Germany probably in the late period of WWII to the Turkish Republic. She was born on May 31, 1928, in Obermendiz, Germany. Her father's name is Friedrich Karl Dernbach. She married Afet Inan's brother in 1963 in Turkey and they had at least one child. She worked in Alman Hastanesi [i.e. German Hospital] in Beyoglu (Pera).

The Broadside reads: "A meeting of the Ladies of the City of Philadelphia will be held this day at 4 o'clock P.M. at the School Room in Tenth Street one door above Spring Garden St. to devise means to give aid and comfort to our noble Soldiers who have volunteered for the defense of our outraged Flag. Contributions will be thankfully accepted of such materials as may be found useful to the Volunteers. In times like these when our Husbands Fathers Sons and Brothers are doing battle for the honor of our common country let the women be not behind-hand in bestowing their aid and sympathy." Original black cloth boards. 209 black and white vintage photos of various sizes from 1 x 1 in. to 5.5 x 3 in. Includes 12 postcards of locations in Washington state and British Columbia Canada. 40 pages. Album is completely full with photos on every page.<br/><br/>Notably includes a photo of a young woman graduate in cap and gown who holds a pennant that reads "Haddon H.S. 1911". In another photo a women holds a pennant that includes "1918". Other images in the album include women playing tennis and riding bicycles. Girls wear uniforms and march across a field in formation or perform calisthenics; other photos show the same schoolgirls camping in nature amongst tents and forest scenery. There are also images of younger children at school and at play wearing dress up clothes or preparing for a stage production; they wear colonial-era costumes and one is even dressed in a Japanese kimono. Some photos depict community life such as local parades in which dozens of American flags are proudly waved; and even images of shipbuilders at work. Few photos have handwritten captions but those that do show personality of the owner with remarks such as: "cutie" and "happy". Includes 12 postcards of the University of Washington Seattle campus and of attractions around Victoria British Columbia. Accompanied by a commemorative silver salver try from the Columbian Exposition and featuring an image of the Women's Building. As part of the Columbian Exposition a world's fair hosted in 1893 the Women's Congress convened to establish a building constructed by and for women to promote the work of women architects artists writers and entrepreneurs. Touted as "the greatest event of its kind in history" the Women's Congress released these commemorative pieces to spread awareness and raise profits to support women's work. unknown

Votes for Women. 8 x 5.5 in. 2 pages. Published by the Liberal Publication Department. Leaflet No. 2520. "By the Representation of the People Act of 1918 women are given the Parliamentary Vote for the first time. It is estimated that the number of women thus enfranchised will be six million." The Representation of the People Act of 1918 granted the vote to women over the age of 30 who met a property qualification. The same Act gave the vote to all men over the age of 21. As a result of this act 8.5 million women joined the electorate and made up almost 40% of all voters in the United Kingdom. This was a great victory for the women's suffrage movement which had been calling for voting rights since the 1830s. Militant suffrage groups in the UK were even known for campaigns of destruction and mayhem in order to keep their issue in the forefront of everyone's minds. Horizontal fold line ¼" from top edge.
