Bradbound brown boards patterned for leather effect "Album" stamped in gilt on cover. Modest rubbing to the front hinge and slight bumping at the corners. 164 glossy-finish snapshot photographs of the female college students and their life at Cornwall in a variety of sizes including 3.5" x 5.5" 2.5" x 4.5" 3.5" x 2.5" inches both black and white and sepia. Most are captioned in white ink. Slight warp to some photographs from being pasted to the pages and occasion residue from fingerprints. Beautiful impressionistic portraits of the life of these hopeful young teachers in Cornwall. In addition to the many vivid photos of the teachers going for outings and picnicks "Help yourself to the cream" and lively portraits "the long and short of it" under a photograph of a tall young woman smiling ruefully there are photographs of the ancient city of Cornwall which carry a beautiful spectral quality. In the 1920s teaching was one of the only pursuits available to women who wanted economic enfranchisement outside of waged domestic service. However there were many restrictions placed on female teachers; The women we see smiling in these photos although choosing liberation in one sense also faced much personal sacrifice. These women had to live morally exemplary lives by the rigorous contemporary standards since they were entrusted to raise the youth. Additionally until 1944 in the UK no married women were allowed to work as teachers. If a woman teacher married she had to resign from her job; if she was already married she was sacked. Some women found a way around the marriage bars by marrying in secret and then living apart from their husband or by having a very long engagement. Most female teachers however remained single in a time when marriage and motherhood signified adult female identity. The tensions between two identities-- that of the professional teacher and that of the feminine woman-- coupled with the influence of the suffrage movement and systematic unfair treatment in the teacher's unions led to teachers becoming some of the most ardent feminists of the movement. unknown books

193075191930. Various. 7 volumes 8vos various paginations. Each signed by Vivian Johnson in front one with a gift inscription to a family member the rest with her ownership signature. A few scattered markings in the text but generally not annotated. Generally very good with wear to covers but each generally sound. Lovely set of science books from the library of one of the important woman scientists in the new field of solid state physics. Vivian Annabelle Johnson 1912-1985 was born and raised in Portland Oregon earing a B.A. in physics from Reed College before attending Purdue as a graduate assistant under Karl Lark-Horovitz. She earned a Master's degree in 1934 and three years later completed her PhD thesis Effect of Valence Electrons on the Electron Cloud Distribution with Wolfgang Nordheim. This research contributed to the newly developing field. She remained on the faculty at Purdue where she continued her specialization and research being named assistant department head in 1973. Her trailblazing work as a woman in the field paved the way for others such as her friend Cleota Fry. In 1939 Fry became one of the first women to earn a PhD in mathematics also at Purdue before WWII. This collection includes books from her time at Washington High School and Reed College in Portland and Purdue. The Science of Everyday Life by by Edgar F. 1848Cat360New York: Atwill 201 Broadway 1848. Folio. Complete at 9 pages. Two songs with lithographic portrait of Lola Montez by Sarony & Major. Soft rag paper. Light foxing else very good. A likely very early American printing of two pieces tied directly to the upheavals of 1848 issued just as news and personalities of the European revolutions were electrifying American audiences. The first â€œDer Lieben Warnunâ€ Loveâ€™s Warning is attributed to Ludwig I King of Bavaria whose abdication in March 1848 followed the political scandal surrounding his relationship with Lola Montez. The second â€œLes Girondins: Mourir pour la Patrieâ€ with text by Alexandre Dumas and music by Alphonse Varney is one of the most popular revolutionary hymns of the period here presented in English and French. At center is the finely printed lithographic portrait of Lola Montez born Eliza Rosanna Gilbert 1821â€“1861 identified as â€œCountess of Landsfeld.â€ Produced by Sarony & Major the image reflects her brief but consequential position in Bavaria where Ludwig elevated her to the nobility and granted her influence at court. Her presence became politically explosive; student unrest and ministerial crisis forced both her exile and the Kingâ€™s abdication making her a widely discussed celebrity at the time. Montez arrived in the United States in late 1848 quickly converting this notoriety into a touring career. She performed her â€œSpanish dancesâ€ including the sensational â€œSpider Danceâ€ on stages from New York to New Orleans and later turned to lecturing advertising appearances on â€œHeroines of Historyâ€ beauty and personal independence. During the early 1850s she followed the western circuit appearing in San Francisco during the Gold Rush where she commanded high fees and played to packed houses of miners and merchants. She toured through Australia in 1855â€“56 before returning to the United States where she settled in New York and shifted increasingly toward writing and reform-minded lectures before her death in 1861 possibly of syphilis. The piece was published by Joseph Atwill at his 201 Broadway location which he would abandon soon after to board the steamer Crescent City to Chagres eventually making his way to San Francisco and opening Atwillâ€™s Music Store on Washington St. possibly San Franciscoâ€™s first music store before heading off to the mines and then returning to San Francisco a year later to open another music store. Ex-libris "The Countess Dowager of Carnarvon" likely Elizabeth Catherine Howard 1857-1929 second wife of Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert 4th Earl of Carnarvon. The Earls of Carnarvon are the hereditary proprietors of Highclere Castle made famous as the locale for the popular television series "Downton Abbey." Popular account of Mediterranean travel by the prolific Irish novelist and essayist. Kavanagh 1824-1877 spent most of her adult life in France supporting herself and her mother on the proceeds from her writings which were numerous; in addition to several novels the best-known being Nathalie 1851 Kavanagh published volumes of critical essays devotional works books for children and many stories and short pieces for periodicals. Kavanagh's concern with gender and society inflected much of her published work and this is perhaps most true of her travel writing a genre which afforded her the opportunity to couch social critique in the form of casual observation. An engaging photo album depicting the Home Front activities of the young students enrolled in the St. Mary’s Academy Preschool and Kindergarten during the depths of World War II. Printed photos show the ivy-covered building in downtown Portland followed by photos of children in the Baby Buggy brigade Preschool class on the playground a field trip to the fire station birthday party playing with blocks tea party and prayers. Of special interest is the TLS on White House letterhead dated Dec. 4 1944 soon after President Roosevelt had won the election for a fourth term from his private secretary Grace G. Tully 1900-1984 thanking the children for their prayers and nice letter with best wishes from the President. Tully had originally assisted Eleanor Roosevelt and then become private secretary to President Roosevelt after Missy LeHand’s stroke in 1941. She later published her memoir as FDR: My Boss in 1949. St. Mary’s Academy is Oregon’s oldest continually operating secondary school founded in 1858 and while it maintained a co-educational preschool and kindergarten program during World War II it was strictly a single-gender school for 1st grade through high school.
