Scarce. <br/><br/>Londoner Esther De Berdt married an American lawyer and re-located to Philadelphia in 1770. As part of the Philadelphia gentry she met many of the important Colonists including Gen. George Washington. Initially opposed she warmed to the cause of independence. Her husband Joseph became Washington's aide and secretary and eventually a general and still later Governor of Pennsylvania. Esther meanwhile headed the Ladies of Philadelphia and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Continental Army. She dies at age 34 in 1780 failing to see the success that crowned her efforts. Much of this text is in the form of letters. She was one of the outstanding women of the American Revolution. Unique. <br/><br/>Ex libris Emílie Pavlína Venceslava Kittlová aka Emmy Destinn aka Ema Destinnova. As you know she was famed for her portrayal of Aida at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1908. This book bears a two-line inked inscription with her signature dated 11 November 1908 on the blank page. Tipped into the book are 5 official portrait photographs of her in costume. At least two of them are by H. Mishkin New York City. Also tipped-in or laid in are clippings and images of other Aida and operatic performers. Also glued in are reviews of her performances in English and in Czech from a Chicago magazine. Also included are all or parts of printed programs. G. Schirmer hardcover

Now we are very anxious to get into touch with as many such associations as possible. I applied to the Secretary of the London Regional Home School Council & asked if they could furnish me with a list. They replied that it was impossible as the number was too great. I wonder if you could help me I should be intensely grateful .". On the reverse a pencil drawing and some nortes oif no obvious relevance to the the letter. Note: A. The American equivalent gets much more attention on Google but Warwick University Archive has an anti-Nazi leaflet distributed by The Women Shoppers' League c.1936 and the National Archives have a "Note from Miss G. Lieben; leaflet and ticket for a meeting in Grosvenor Gardens Club".; B. ". the League of Women Shoppers. The League was active from 1935 until 1949 when Red-Baiting forced the organization to disband. The League was a middle-class feminist ally for labor as its members used their privilege to highlight workers' struggles. Members recognized that because women did the majority of shopping they wielded considerable influence. Through its slogan "Use your buying power for justice" the League sought to mobilize middle-class and wealthy women as socially active consumers reaching a membership of 25000 in cities as diverse as San Francisco Minneapolis and Atlanta." La ricamatrice è una rivista di costume, moda e attualità, vi si parla di lavori femminili soprattutto ricami, confezione di abiti e ccina, ma anche di eventi come l’Esposizione generale di Londra del 1851. “L’editore si ispirò ai giornali americani come «Englishwoman’s domestic magazine», che proponevano articoli di educazione sociale fornendo alla donna gli strumenti per affrontare i problemi inerenti l’amministrazione domestica e la cura della casa, reputando il lavoro casalingo una vera e propria professione che richiedeva un bagaglio di istruzioni teoriche integrate da consigli pratici. Se nel passato il ricamo era stato uno strumento per tenere le donne lontane dalla vita sociale, ora i lavori d’ago e il ricamo erano promossi a mezzo di sostentamento per le donne che, non ancora sposate, avevano bisogno di lavorare: atteggiamento propositivo tipico della mentalità borghese”.
