199 pages. Signed by all three authors upon title page. An exciting account of two women who were in India the day it gained its independence from Great Britain. Over ten million people were displaced as the result of India being divided into two nations, New India and Pakistan. Ada and Ida saw the results of the fighitng and riots that followed and did what they could to follow the example of the Good Samaritan. They "anointed and bound up wounds and offered assistance." The "twins" as they are known, worked in refugee camps. They distributed tons of clothing and food. They rode into the Himalayan Mountains, where no white woman, much less blond identical twins, had ever been seen, to deliver clothing to people who had their homes and possessions burned or stolen by raiders. For three years, Ada and Ida truly gave "a little bit of love." This story will be of special interest to the thousands of women and men who, during the 1940s, donated clothing and money and worked with their church sewing circles and the packing centers to prepare and ship the items Ada and Ida were privileged to hand out to the refugees. Author has always felt close to "the twins" because on the day she was born, Ada entered her life as nurse for her and her mother. Former owner's name atop title page. Text insterspersed with dozens of interesting black and white photos. Moderate wear overall. Illustrated covers remain bright and glossy. Book

AQ30041s.i.: s.n. s.d. c.1830 Manuscript on paper. 101ff the remainder blank. Paper watermarked 1829. Contemporary red straight-grain morocco richly tooled in gilt and blind A.E.G. Rubbed spine sunned. Marbled endpapers contemporary inked gift inscription and later manuscript note on the provenance of the volume in the hand of a descendent of the original compiler to front blank fly-leaf. A late Georgian manuscript commonplace in a single legible hand comprised predominantly of texts concerning the female character marriage love and virtue. The volume contains a plethora of extracts from published authors both prose and verse including Romantic poets Byron and Wordsworth philosopher Edmund Burke Scottish presbyterian minister James Fordyce Washington Irving and Shakespeare. The manuscript opens with a seemingly original two-page composition concerning the temperament constitution and attributes of women: 'The all-powerful influence of woman - the irresistible control of her attractions - the exquisite and undefinable combination of mind and form - belong not exclusively to any rank or age or country; they are the natural characteristics of humanity all the world over:- hers is an universal empire'. The volume was presented to 'Chuff' from her affectionate 'Wills'; the mid-twentieth century note concerning provenance ascribes the compilation to 'Mr. Sims' though erroneously suggests that it was 'probably compiled.about the time of Waterloo'. . 8vo.
