451j1948New York: KTAV Publishing House Inc. Good with no dust jacket. 1974. Reprint. Hardcover. "The notion of identifiable 'lost tribes' involves certain presuppositions concerning Hebrew history and masses of supposed local evidence in many parts of the world. These presuppositions and the assumed evidence require a candid and searching anthropological historical examination. This book has no other purpose or method. But the examination brings to light a great body of the real facts of Hebrew history." - Preface. "The main thrust of Godbey's work is to disprove the assumption that the northern tribes taken into captivity by Sargon II in 722/1 B. C. were lost in the welter of international movements following that event." - J. M. Myers. "Godbey is fascinating. He is well worth reading - for his consummate passion for detail for his marvelously intricate tapestry of scholarship in an area where so much is tricky territory. He tells us a great deal about the horizontal development of Judaism." - Morris Epstein. "Allen Howard Godbey 1864-1948 of Missouri was a Methodist minister Methodist historian and teacher writer and scholar in the field of the Old Testament Hebrew history archeology and Semitics. He was a professor at Duke University 1926-1932." - SNAC. 81169Edinburgh: Payback Press 1996. First U.K. Edition. First Impression a trade paperback original. Octavo 19.5cm; original pictorial card wrappers; xii2377pp. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page to Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Gwendolyn Brooks: "Miss Brooks - Forgive the N. word this was written a long time ago. But I'd say it again / Gil Scott-Heron A Chicago Native 4/97." Trivial wear to extremities hint of foxing to text edges; very Near Fine.<br /> <br /> UK edition of Scott-Heron's second novel originally published by Dial Press in 1972. Inspired largely by his own experiences as a student during the late 1960s-early 1970s the book is a satirical look at campus life during that turbulent era. "Earl Thomas student body president at Sutton University is in a difficult position: struggling with the fact that even a historically black college could be part of a system that still priviliges whites he's also threatened by his fellow students members of the radical activist group MJUMBE. Claiming the time has come for revolution not reform the leaders of MJUMBE are poised not only to bring Earl down personally but also to instigate large scale acts of violence" from the Grove/Atlantic reissue. This copy bears a particularly poignant inscription to fellow Chicago poet Gwendolyn Brooks whose involvement in the Black Arts Movement was a key influence on Scott-Heron's work. Brooks's regard for Scott-Heron is evident in her poem titled "Gil Scott-Heron":<br /> <br /> "Chance-taker<br /> Emotion voyager<br /> Street-strutter<br /> Contemporary Spirit<br /> Untamed Proud Poet<br /> Rough Healer<br /> He is His"<br /> <br /> An exceedingly good association copy of a key title. Scott-Heron's autograph material has always been uncommon; this is only the third inscribed book we have seen over many years with no signed or inscribed books appearing in the auction record. BLOCKSON 5986 for the Dial Press edition. Payback Press unknown

Joints and extremities a bit rubbed but the wear nicely hidden with dye text apparently washed and pressed in keeping with bibliophilic fashion at the time of binding isolated trivial foxing but still an excellent copy clean and crisp internally and in a sturdy binding.<br/> <br/> This is the Huth - Kalbfleisch copy of an uncommonly seen account of the lives of Irish saints. Our author Thomas Messingham ca. 1577 - ca. 1638 was a secular priest who served as rector of the Irish College in Paris and later as dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral Dublin. "Florilegium Insulae Sanctorum" his major work is primarily made up of the hagiographies of Saints Columba Patrick and Brigid with the lives of the lesser Irish saints and sermons composing the last few chapters. Although Messingham was more a compiler than a writer of original history the present work is of special value because it preserves sources that are now otherwise lost to us. Our copy has resided in two distinguished libraries. Former owner Henry Huth 1815-78 collected a wide range of materials always insisting that a book be in outstanding condition. The Huth sales conducted for a decade beginning in 1911 constituted one of the major stories in the history of the English auction rooms this copy was lot number 4948 selling on July 6 1916 for the substantial amount of £8. Afterwards the volume was in the collection of the eminent American collector Charles C. Kalbfleisch 1868-1943 who was particularly interested in fine bindings and early printing and whose books are known for their consistently fine state of preservation. In a sale entitled "The Arts of the Book . . . the Splendid Library Formed by the Late Charles C. Kalbfleisch New York" Parke-Bernet sold much of his collection in January of 1944 the present item was lot 630 selling for a wartime-depressed $25. Sebastiani Cramoisy unknown

19360008193HAIFA ISRAEL. Good. 1936. On offer is a notebook and diary In Hebrew authored by Ruth Aschner a daughter of German refugees who came to Israel in mid-1930s. The notebook measures 81' x 62' contains 138 pages and is 90% complete. The pages are slightly yellowed and there are some scribbles on the cover and some pages but otherwise the condition is good and the handwriting is very legible. On the 41st page there is text: "General notebook of Ruth Aschner Carmel Mountain Ben-Zion Neighborhood Aschner House" followed by a record dated 1937 with rules of a ball game rules. Though cursory search did not reveal much information it is clear from the context that the family came to Mandatory Palestine in mid-1930s at the time Ruth was writing her diary she was between 11 -14 years old her father worked at "Migdal" most likely Migdal insurance company - Ruth writes about his trips to Jerusalem on business and in one of the entries writes that someone broke into his car and stole his work documents "acts" "everything collected during the months of work in MIgdal". The first 80 pages are school notes including conjugation tables reading and grammar rules with explanations in German writing practice in Hebrew riddles and jokes lists of books a list of about 140 pictures from Degel cigarette packs Kedem tobacco company a list of students with their birthdays and more. The most interesting part is 46 pages titled "Private Diary belonging to Ruth Aschner from September 1940 to the end of May 1941". The entries vary in length there are usually 3 to 5 entries on each page but there are some that take more than one page. It could be a typical description of everyday life of a school girl but almost every entry includes details reflecting the most tragic and turbulent time in the 20th century history. She writes about Italian bombings of Haifa SS Patria disaster Yugoslavia Coup d'Etat death of Greek Prime Minister Metaxas. The very first entry starts with description of a bombing: "In the afternoon the Rozens came to visit us suddenly there was an attack the siren did not work all the bombs fell into the sea. Then we went to a dressmaker that is making a dress and a school skirt for me. Yehudit Ben-Zion and her family moved to another apartment not close." Sept. 6 1940. Italian bombings of Mandatory Palestine during WW2 were targeting ports and refineries in Palestine primarily Haifa and Tel-Aviv. Haifa was hit many times since June 1940 the bombings continued until June 1941 and so does her diary - along with describing bombings sirens hiding in shelter she writes about weather school trips scout activities music lessons entertainment: "In the afternoon I have a music lesson. In the morning Yehudit came here . For dinner I made salad - tomatoes with salt onion oil and vinegar. At 2.30 p.m. there was an attack again we ran to the bomb shelter the bombs fell near the "refinery" the siren was late as usually. At 7.10 there was an attack I was at Dalia's .The news are not clear. ". Sept. 8 1940; "In the morning at 8.45 the siren sounded - we ran to the shelter I was still in pajamas.I helped mother later I will go to the shoemaker.there have been 5 attacks already and in all of them tanks were burning. Together with those that I mentioned there were 8. At 2.10 the siren sounded again and we ran to the shelter . did not hear anything.then I was in the middle of dishwashing. Then there was another attack at 2.30 we did not hear anything ran to the shelter then after all-clear signal we went up. In the evening I will go to the dressmaker to try clothes on. Two letters came today one from England one from America. At 5 in the evening there was another attack and we ran to the shelter again. It makes you crazy - 4 times during the day.terrible. . Dad Harry and Paula will go to the cinema to see "Verdi" in the evening ." Sept.9 1940. On that day there were no casualties in Haifa but 147 people were killed in Tel-Aviv about which she writes 3 days later: "On 9.9 there was a bombing in Tel-Aviv about 120 people were killed 100 of them Jewish. Jews were destroyed and injured at their homes. Enemy airplanes were flying low after the event the siren sounded." In November another tragic event happens this time in Haifa: "Several days ago there arrived a ship with refugees from Germany and occupied countries she has been in the port for a week already and the English do not allow them to get off . There are some people we know like Epstein and other.". In November three ships with over 3600 Jewish refugees arrived in Haifa but the British refused their entry and the passengers were transferred to another ship SS Patria. Yishuv leaders organized a general strike but it had little effect: "19.11 40: today there is a strike at 12:00 until midnight because they do not want to allow people to get off from the ship ." On November 25 overloaded SS Patria sank because of the explosion: "25.11. Disaster happened. The ship Patria sank. Do not know why it happened. They say that it exploded but it is only rumours. People did not drown but 30 were injured and transported to Hadassah. The others are sitting in the port without clothes so we organized into groups and stations and collected clothes and blankets for the refugees." Unfortunately she was wrong - over two hundred and seventy people drowned 172 were injured. As it became known many years later the explosion was organized by Haganah members as an attempt to prevent the ship from leaving the port but they miscalculated the size of explosion. She also writes about political news from Europe there is a part titled "politics" in some of her entries - usually it is a newspaper clipping accompanied by her comments: "I think that instead of writing what I think is right it would be better to take pieces from newspaper in newspapers they know politics better than I do". The clippings include an article about death of Greek Prime-minister Ioannis Metaxas a headline about certificates issued to Jewish refugees and an article about Belgrade Coup D'Etat of March 27 1941 that replaced pro-Nazi government with young King Peter II opposing to Nazi Germany: "Big revolution in Yugoslavia. Regent Paul left the young King Peter 17.5 years old came to power against Hitler and the old Prime-minister was arrested because he wanted to support Hitler Peter is a "terribly" nice boy he immediately became loved I like him very much. 17 year old boy and the king very very unusual." Apr. 3 1941. She writes about events important for the Jewish community in Palestine like a few lines about Henrietta Szold birthday and about the death of Dov Hoz Labor Zionist leader in a car accident. Her diary is a great evidence of what life for Jewish refugees was like in pre-state Israel. She mentions many movies and performances they saw: "I went with the parents now to "Matate" - "Lights in darkness" and will come back in the evening." "Matate" was a satirical theatre established in 1928. There are several detailed descriptions of her trips with Tzofim Jewish scouts to Tiberias Hurshat Ha'arbaim Kibbutz Yagur and Druz village Isfiya as well as of small family trips to Jerusalem. She writes about her friends and family birthdays and even gives the recipe of a chocolate fish she made for her father. This is an excellent document of life in Mandatory Palestine during the first years of the Second World War. It contains references to many historical events as seen by a young girl and provides valuable information for local historians and genealogists including names of local residents Aschner family and friends students and teachers from Ruth's school and Tzofim movement many with their birthdays. It also contains information about cultural events in the city and school program and activities.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 1940s; 20TH CENTURY; WW2 SECOND WORLD WAR; ITALIAN BOMBINGS OF HAIFA; HAIFA REFINERY BOMBINGS; LIFE OF JEWISH IMMIGRANTS IN PRE-STATE ISRAEL; MANDATORY PALESTINE; ISRAEL; PRE-STATE ISRAEL; JEWISH REFUGEES IN MANDATORY PALESTINE; REFUGEES FROM NAZI GERMANY; HEBREW SCHOOLS IN MANDATORY PALESTINE; "MATATE" SATIRICAL THEATRE; READING PATTERNS OF JEWISH YOUTHS IN PRE-STATE ISRAEL; PATRIA DISASTER; HURSHAT HA'ARBAIM; BEN-ZION NEIGHBORHOOD HAIFA; SCHOOL TRIPS IN MANDATORY PALESTINE; ISFIYA; MOUNT CARMEL; YAGUR; YUGOSLAV COUP D'ETAT KING PETER II OF YUGOSLAVIA; IOANNIS METAXAS; HAR CARMEL WATER TOWER; CARMEL MOUNTAIN; TZOFIM; HEBREW SCOUTS MOVEMENT; JEWISH YOUTH MOVEMENT; MIGDAL COMPANY; DOV HOZ; JEWISH YOUTH IN MANDATORY PALESTINE; IMMIGRATION TO PRE-STATE ISRAEL; FIFTH ALIYAH; FIFTH WAVE OF IMMIGRATION TO ISRAEL; YISHUV; HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover

A folio ledger 330 × 205 mm with information on the hotels on approximately 130 pages plus a further 90 or so letters documents notes floor plans and maps pinned to leaves or loosely inserted. Half calf and cloth; minor signs of external wear; trifling signs of handling to some of the inserted paperwork; overall in excellent condition. The Lion Brewing and Malting Company in North Adelaide was founded in 1884 and floated in 1888 the same year as the South Australian Brewing Company Limited 'in order to secure the brewing hotel and property assets of Beaglehole and Johnston . The company owned many hotels in South Australia' Wikipedia. 'The Register' on 24 April 1914 reported that 'At the Lion Brewery North Adelaide which has been in existence for many years the last brew of beer has been made. The company who owns it has arranged with the Walkerville Brewing Company to supply all its houses in future and a contract has been entered into with the Lion Company to supply the other with malt'. When Lion was eventually taken over by the SA Brewing Company in 1973 'The Canberra Times' 1 August 1973 noted that 'Lion's name is misleading as it operates in the hotel trade and not in the brewing field. It owns 25 hotel freeholds in SA and recently agreed to pay $550000 for the 50% interest of the estate of F.S. Sison deceased in six hotels'. When both these companies - the Lion and the SA Brewing Company - entered the industry in the 1880s 'it was common practice for breweries wishing to protect and expand their trade to do so by obtaining control over as many retail outlets as their finances would permit. The tenants of theses outlets hotels were required by contract to stock only the products of the brewer owner. Investment of hotels therefore was conceived and practised essentially as an aid to protect and expand brewery output. The return by way of rents was of secondary importance and was usually much below the yields available from alternative invests' Michael Cudmore: 'History of the South Australian Brewing Company Limited' page 33. The Trade Practices Act 1974 made illegal this very lucrative 'tied house' system. This unique register gathers together in one volume a wealth of fascinating detail relating to this system pertaining to approximately 60 hotels across the state. 98413Babbage was 'engineer scientist and explorer . son of Charles Babbage Cambridge professor of mathematics and the first computer pioneer and his wife Georgina sister of W.W. Whitmore a founder of South Australia. In 1856 Babbage was sent north to search for gold as far as the Flinders Ranges. He found none but discovered the MacDonnell River Blanchewater and Mount Hopeful. He was the first to dispel the current idea of the impassability of the Lake Torrens "horseshoe" . In late 1857 he was appointed leader of a northern expedition. Babbage left in February 1858 to explore the country between Lakes Torrens and Gairdner and further to the north and west. His concept of exploration was based on thorough survey mapping and examination of the country ideals with which Francis Dutton commissioner of crown lands agreed in his instructions and early correspondence. With cumbrous and ingenious equipment Babbage carried out the first part hampered by bad terrain and lack of water. But he had no sense of urgency and was thus completely out of tune with the current concept of opening up new country for quick exploitation. His slowness led to public and parliamentary clamour to which Dutton later succumbed and sent Peter Egerton Warburton to supersede him. <p>Meanwhile Babbage had moved north from the Elizabeth River discovered Hermit Hill and delineated the western shores of Lake Eyre South. There Warburton relieved him on 5 November. Based on his experiences of 1856 Babbage also believed in a gap in the "horseshoe" and at Hermit Hill confirmed his belief. He had actually crossed the gap but Warburton was the first to traverse it completely. On grounds of unfair treatment Babbage successfully petitioned for a parliamentary inquiry. In 1858-59 voluminous evidence was taken but no report issued. He then withdrew from public life until 1866. In 1870-72 Charles Todd employed Babbage as an assistant in planning and plotting the Overland Telegraph line and as a supervisor of contractors. His achievements as an explorer were notable but the accompanying controversy tended unduly to overshadow them and his attainments in other fields' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. <p>Indeed 'the reports from the expedition were . a significant prelude to Stuart's successful crossing of the continent from south to north' in 1861-62 The Davidson Collection Third Sale July 2007 lot 565. This lengthy preamble should help explain the connection between the following eleven foolscap folio Parliamentary Papers relating to Benjamin Babbage published in Adelaide by the Government Printer in 1858 and 1859. <p>1 Northern Exploration. Reports &c of Explorations into the Interior by Messrs. Babbage Warburton Geharty and Parry. SAPP25/1858; 51 pages plus 2 large folding maps. <p>2 Northern Exploration. Further Correspondence respecting the Exploring Party under Command of Mr. Babbage. SAPP25/1858; 6 pages. <p>3 Cost of Northern Exploration. SAPP36/1858; 1 page. <p>4 Northern Exploration. Correspondence between the Hon. the Commissioner of Crown Lands and the Commissioner of Police Major Peter Egerton Warburton relative to the Progress of the Northern Exploring Parties. SAPP127/1858; 4 pages. <p>5 Northern Explorations. Reports from Messrs Babbage and Warburton and Police-Trooper Burtt on Exploration into the North and North-Western Interior of South Australia. Correspondence between the Government and Messrs. Babbage and Warburton relative to Northern Explorations. SAPP37/1859; 2 pages. <p>As often with these Parliamentary Papers relating to expeditions the maps are a constant source of pleasure. The best one in this group is one of the large folding maps in SAPP25/1858: 'Sketch of the Country North of the Gawler Ranges' 324 × 485 mm. It is a lithographed map printed in two colours in an unusual manner blue on the left red on the right: 'The portion in Blue is taken from a Plan supplied by Major Warburton. The portion in Red is taken from a Drawing supplied by Mr Babbage'. These parliamentary papers printed on blue stock have been neatly removed from several bound volumes; essentially they are in uniformly fine condition ideal candidates for preservation in a more appropriate binding. <p>South Australian Parliamentary Papers Numbers 25 25 36 127 151 154 159 and 166 of 1858 and 20 21 and 37 of 1859 McLaren 4981-4983 16481 4984-4986 16485 16486 4987 and 4988 respectively. Items 16481 16485 and 16486 are listed under Warburton only and not Babbage as well. We suggest they should be there; we have called them 4983A 4986A and 4986B in our annotated copy of the bibliography. Offered together with a related item Victorian Parliamentary Paper Number 1 of 1859 'Report on the Plants collected during Mr Babbage's Expedition into the North-Western Interior of South Australia in 1858' by Ferdinand Mueller foolscap folio 21 pages stab-sewn and uncut as issued; a fine copy albeit with minor infill to the bottom corner of the first two leaves. McLaren 13749. <p>The complete suite of Parliamentary Papers relating to Babbage's 1858 Northern Exploring Expedition and its aftermath is very rare; for example the exceptional collection of Rodney Davidson contained only six of the above twelve items which sold in four lots to the one buyer for $5360 in 2007. 12 items. unknown

"Fifth and grandest edition. John Strype was already collecting materials for the text by 1703 and an ambitious reprint 'with very great Additions throughout and illustrated with about 100 large Copper Cutts . requiring much Time and Great expence' was advertised as early as 1708. The advertisement was on the title verso of Hatton's New View of London a smaller and cheaper book whose popularity actually caused the postponement of Strype's more monumental work. His two folio volumes cost six guineas and the print run was probably at least 500 copies. He included what he believed to be Stow's entire original text which had become conflated with the 1618 and 1633 editions of Anthony Munday clearly identifying his own additions in the margins. John Kip who had been responsible for the views of London buildings in volume I of Mortier's Nouveau theatre de la Grande Bertagne 1707 is credited with about half the 28 engraved views of 'eminent places'. In addition there are two folding general maps of London one showing the city as it was in Queen Elizabeth's time 17 ward maps bks. II-III and 20 parish maps bks. IV and VI. The only map to be signed is the Parish of St. Mary Rotherhithe revised by John Pullen and engraved by John Harris. 2" Christies. John Stow's Survey of London first published in 1598 brims with amusing descriptions and anecdotes as well as highly detailed accounts of the buildings social conditions and customs of the time based on a wide range of classical and medieval historical literature public and civic records and Stow's own intimate knowledge of the city where he spent his life. "The reader of A Survey travels with Stow through each of the city's wards and the adjoining city of Westminster learns about the wall bridges gates and parish churches . . . Stow also records the negative aspects of urban growth in the shape of unsightly sprawl filth the destruction of ancient monuments and above all poverty. His book approaches the thoroughness of an encyclopaedia . . . It is noteworthy that while Camden's Britannia was written in Latin for the educated élite Stow's Survey was composed in the language of his fellow countrymen." This edition of 1720 greatly expanded with interpolated amendments by John Strype is considered the best and most desirable. "Throughout his life at Low Leyton Strype crossed the River Lea into London each week to meet and converse with his antiquarian friends and to call on his contacts in the book trade. . . . The Survey had been repeatedly revised and enlarged in order to keep up with the changing aspect of the post-fire city now much expanded and altered in its religion and other ways. . . . Although Strype had arranged most of the work by 1707 and the engravings had been prepared it was set aside after the publication of Edward Hatton's New View of London in 1708 which seemed to cover much the same ground and was considerably smaller and cheaper. . . . Finally once the defects of Hatton's book were acknowledged another agreement in November 1716 led to the Survey's publication at the end of 1720. . . . The print run was probably more than 500 copies . . . To quote Merritt ‘By this stage the Survey has a multiple personality switching with little warning from nostalgic Elizabethan antiquary Stow . . . to diligent post-Restoration recorder of events Strype and back again’ Merritt 87." 1522032982Coloniae: Heronem Alopeciu 1522 An extremely scarce early edition published in September 1522 - a month after the authorised Basel edition - by Hero Alopecius in Cologne. We have only been able to find one reference to it University of Toronto. Erasmus arranged publication of the Basel edition in August 1522 in response to the appearance of an unauthorised version in Cambridge in 1521. He had originally worked on the content in 1509-1511 and this work developed from his earlier writing and lectures became a popular and important text book on the writing of letters. It was much reprinted. This copy is newly rebound in full calf with panelled design to boards and gilt titles to spine. The page edges are red although this may not be contemporary. New endpapers. Contents with 2 initial blanks - the first with ink notation on the edition - this looks likely to be 1800's in date and the paper does not look contemporary. Title with elaborate design including 2 cherubs holding a shield with 3 crowns with contemporary latin note at the top; letter from Erasmus to Nicolao Beraldo pp 2-4; text with beautiful decorative initial capitals pp 5-414 Finis. No final blanks. There is some scholarly annotation in latin and gentle underlining - this could be contemporary. There are a number of mispaginations but the ties work in all cases: 47-74-75-50; 51-78-79-54; 55-82-83-58; 59-98-87-62-63-90-65; 170-117-172; 177-168-179; 192-191-192-193. There are a number of professional paper repairs: to the side of the title page and page 13/14; from p 357 onwards where the top corner tips had been burnt out - this begins with the just the tip but towards the end of the work includes some page numbers and just clips a couple of margin notes - the final 2 leaves have repair to sides. These corners do not have the red edges. Towards the end of the work there are a few pages with some grubbiness at the bottom corners. Otherwise the work is very clean with high quality paper.
