17000Original WW II Poster from 1942 reads "Women in the War We Can't Win Without Them" Extra large size poster 29" x 41" in. Shows a woman factory worker wearing overalls or apron riveting with both hands a weapon that looks like a torpedo. This highly visual poster was promoting women in the wartime workforce it was produced in 1942 by the War Manpower Commission. At the time "Women in the War" was one of the most widely distributed images of a woman laboring in war production. The poster is in red blue and black poster. Publisher was the United States. Government Printing Office. Place of Publication: "Washington D.C." By 1943 when the labor shortage was most acute the two agencies worked together in concerted campaigns targeting employers to hire women and women to become 'production soldiers'" Yellin Our Mothers' War p. 44. Women laboring in factories even in the service of the war effort was controversial. "Despite the tide of public opinion against working wives War Manpower Commission director Paul McNutt concentrated on on patriotism. The campaigns glamorized war work always showing that women could maintain their femininity and still be useful" Yellin pp. 45-46. Examples of this important poster are held at numerous institutions including the Library of Congress and MOMA. At lower left corner of sheet: "War Manpower Commission Washington D.C." 19444829bdNew York: The Viking Press 1944. Octavo blue cloth hardcover gilt letters gilt illustration to upper cover xiv vi 175 pp. Very Good with sunning to edges and former-owner bookplate; in a Good dust jacket with edgewear with includes light chipping. From dust jacket: The great story of aviation and the direction in which it is going is the story of our future -- a future which will be written in terms of either winged peace or winged death. It’s a story which few men could tell with the authority and conviction of ‘Billy’ Bishop. Bishop learned aviation the hard way. In the cockpit of a World War I flying crate he became the greatest Allied ace by destroying 72 German aircraft. In the years between the wars he remained actively interested in aviation -- both military and commercial -- and kept a wary eye on the growing air might of Germany which he was sure we would have to fight again. When World War II broke Canada became the heart of Britain’s air-training and air-transport system and ‘Billy’ Bishop has played a vital role in this great program. Now at the climax of his career he has undertaken a new job and rendered what may well be his greatest service to aviation. He has poured into an utterly fascinating book the past the present and -- most of all -- the future of flight. He has told the story of aviation from Kitty Hawk to the B-29 Superfortresses much of it in terms of his personal experiences. He shows us how our world has already been changed geographically socially economically politically; how these changes will be either for great good or for desperate evil. He makes us aware of the new world map with its limitless directions and its textbook-shattering implications. He shows us the new routes over which we will either trade or fight find peace or destruction. Through all of Bishop’s stirring account written with burning urgency runs a zeal to make us understand the realities of world aviation today. The proved possibilities of stratospheric flight rocket and jet-propulsion have already rendered every plane now in the air obsolete. New York to London in three hours is assured. Tomorrow’s air age is here! The Viking Press, 1944. hardcover books

"Presumably this edition was also published by the Republican Party's national committee."<br/> The broadside begins with "EXTRACTS from a Speech by ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS now Vice-President of the Confederate States delivered in the Secession Convention of Georgia on the 31st day of January 1861: 'This step the secession of Georgia once taken can never be recalled; and all the baleful and withering consequences that must follow as you will see will rest on the Convention for all coming time. To attempt to overthrow such a Government as this. is the height of madness folly and wickedness to which I can neither lend my sanction nor my vote'." In his 1868 book 'A Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States' Stephens declared the Speech to be a "fabrication."<br/> There follows an answer to the question 'WHO COMMENCED THE WAR' "Those who would throw the guilt of the war upon the shoulders of Mr. Lincoln are requested to read the following catalogue of 'remarkable events' published in a Southern Almanac all of which occurred during the Presidency of Mr. Buchanan." 5231U.S. General. Head of all US Forces during the Vietnam War. Great content. Headed: "Gen. William Westmoreland - Commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam - CNN Interview." In part: "We had in fact replaced the French in that regard -- and we had advisers down to battalion level within the Vietnamese military structure. The problem at that time was not an invasion of the area by the North Vietnamese but it was the erosion of the effectiveness of government brought about by the so-called "VC" -- the Viet Cong. It was not open warfare . At the outset the President made the statement that he would not geographically broaden the war and that meant that military actions were confined to the territory of South Vietnam. The enemy was not operating under such restraints. That gave the enemy a sanctuary. We were winning on the battlefield but whether we were winning strategically is another matter." Signed in black ink " W. Westmoreland". Great content and In excellent condition. unknown books

157128345Nuremberg 1571. Engraving printed on two sheets of laid paper joined. Engraver's monogram at the lower left. Early manuscript caption in English in the lower margin. Plate mark: 11 x 16 inches. Sheet size: 14 5/8 x 18 3/8 inches. Tear extending from the right margin closed with small void in excellent facsimile small worm hole within the image. Very rare German news-sheet map depicting the Turkish fleet invasion of Cyprus in 1570.<br/> <br/>Exceptionally scarce engraved German broadside map depicting the Ottoman fleet sailing to Venetian-controlled Cyprus in 1570. The early English manuscript caption in ink just below image reads: "The representation of the Turkish Navall Army in ye year 1570 going forth to meet the Venetian fleet." Cyprus then under Venetian rule was a strategic point for controlling shipping and trade in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Ottomans ruled by Sultan Selim II had long desired the island. Following a series of warnings and demands the Ottoman fleet commanded by Müezzinzade Ali Pasha and Lala Mustafa Pasha sailed for Cyprus in late June 1570. Depicted here the Turkish fleet was composed of an estimated 350-400 ships and upwards of 100000 men. Following sieges and massacres at Nicosia Kyrenia and Famagusta the island was taken by August 1571. Although the invasion was long-heralded the Venetian fleet failed to prevent the invasion or the subsequent fall of Cyprus to the Turks. However they subsequently raised the support of the "Holy League" of the Catholic maritime states in the Mediterranean and defeated the Ottoman fleet at the Battle of Lepanto in October 1571 off the western coast of Greece. The victory of the Holy League prevented the Ottoman Empire expanding further along the European side of the Mediterranean though did not end their possession of Cyprus. Jenichen who signed the map with his monogram 'BI' was the leading German publisher of news-sheet maps. Jenichen and compatriot Matthias Zündt took particular interest in the conflict and produced views and maps of it that equaled and surpassed those of their Italian counterparts. Given their ephemeral nature all are rare and desirable. We can locate only one other example of this engraving appearing at auction in recent times Sotheby's London 29 April 2014 lot 157 £60000.<br/> <br/>Hollstein XL B 128; G.K.
