1816217967Georgia 1816. unbound. 4 Pages 13.25 x 8.25 inches Georgia January 23 1816. This exceptional-content letter is a petition for clemency sent to the Governor of Georgia on behalf of a soldier who had been sentenced to death for murdering his senior office. In part: "the deceased and the petitioner were comrades in the army and both got drunk. He is a boy just verging to manhood.who has given five years service in the honorable cause of defending our country. The deeds of this patriot could atone for the errors of youth. The sentence of.death for murder affords ample room for Executive interference.both were drunk in the morning and were strolling without the garrison - without a solitary witness to attest his innocence. He has a record of good conduct." The petitioner James Nixon was illiterate and signed his signature with an "X" after his name. This petition also contains the signatures of thirteen soldiers and officers of the U.S. Artillery as well as the Officers of the Court. Repairs at folds and uniformly toned; otherwise very good condition.

unknown books

A handsome and large-scale map of Virginia from Norfolk to Lynchburg and north to Baltimore and Harper's Ferry. The explanatory cartouche indicates "The extraordinary large scale on which this map is drawn has been adapted to make it just what we designed it to be namely 1st. The most distinct map ever published of the whole Virginia Territory; 2nd. A Marking Map that is a map to mark the change of positions of the Union Forces in red pencil and the Rebel Forces in blue on the receipt of every telegram from the seat of war; for this latter purpose we want plenty of space and a distinctness combined with enough detail not to crowd but to enable us to follow the march of the army as advised by the telegrams. The pencils which we also furnish should be used with a light hand to enable obliterating the marks with the aid of a little soft bread if found necessary. These peculiarities combined with extreme cheapness will make this Map a welcome companion to every person interested in the pending struggle of our nation." L. Prang & Co. unknown books

Defense of the Comte de Lally for his actions in India during the Seven Years' War. This is one of two versions authored by him. Lally head of the French expedition to India reached Pondichery in 1758. Though capable he was incredibly unpopular and fell into a series of events which proved fatal to his career and his person. He was unsuccessful in the Siege of Madras beaten at the Battle of Wandiwash and eventually capitulated from the siege of Pondichery. Taken prisoner by the British he returned to France on parole and was imprisoned for two years before being put on trial and executed. This is his last defence published shortly thereafter or perhaps immediately preceding. A publisher's note is dated April 14 and Lally was executed May 6. The map shows the Indian subcontinent and Madagascar. unknown books

A bold image by Riggs promoting increased homefront production dominated by a large waist-up figure of an American airman raising his goggles with his right hand and gesturing "thumbs up" with his left. Robert Riggs 1896-1970 was in his heyday one of the best- known artists and illustrators in the United States. After studies at the Art Students League and service during World War I Riggs settled in Philadelphia his home base for the rest of his life. In the 1930s and '40s he rose to national prominence as an illustrator lithographer and commercial artist producing well-known images of boxers and circuses two life-long obsessions and of soldiers during World War II. In 1940 around the peak of his career as an illustrator his drawings commanded $750- $1500 each and his name was as well-known in the trade as that of Norman Rockwell. Curiously at a recent auction of African American printed manuscript and visual material an example of this poster was offered quite tenuously making the assertion that the image is of a Tuskegee airman. On the basis of that assertion the example offered there realized $2400. GPO / War Production Board unknown books

Prohaska moved in 1908 from his native Yugoslavia to the San Francisco Bay area where he received his formal art education.
