Contemporary blue half cloth over marbled boards. Includes the decorative original printed wrappers in black and gold. Very rare illustrated catalogue of the First All-Russian Agricultural Exhibition of 1923 held in Moscow, printed in Cyrillic type throughout. With a facsimile autograph of Lenin. - The Agricultural Exhibition was the first temporary exhibition complex of the post-revolutionary era to be built as a system of pavilions. It involved 225 wooden pavilions, the first samples of Russian avant-garde architecture, showcasing 150,000 exhibits. Promoting advanced agricultural techniques, the use of new crops and livestock breeds, it proved at the same time an effective tool of visual propaganda for Lenin's cooperative plan, and an impetus to organizing numerous regional and local agricultural fairs. A total of 5,000 exhibitors participated in the fair, including 600 concerns from Britain, the United States, France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Denmark, Belgium, China and Turkey. Over a duration of two months the exposition attracted 1,618,882 visitors. - The catalogue includes contributions by Michail Iwanowitsch Kalinin (1875-1946), the leader of the Agricultural Commission of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee, as well as by Western delegates, such as the diplomat Ulrich von Brockdorff-Rantzau (1869-1928) and the economist Otto Auhagen (1869-1945). With several autographs featured in facsimile. - Binding slightly rubbed at extremities, upper cover a little soiled. Paper brittle with occasional marginal chips and flaws; the double-page exhibition plan torn in half. Still a good copy of this extremely rare publication, commemorating an event which was expected to launch a bright future for the young Soviet Union. Provenance: from the library of the National Socialist "Rußland-Institut der Auslandhochschule" in Berlin with their stamp to versos of title-page and last page. Latterly in the collection of Chimen Abramsky (1916-2010), London. Not in OCLC.
1685C3GD6801U79OLondon 1685. 4to. printed by S. R. for Henry Twyford Thomas Bassett John Place and Samuel Keble 18th-century blind-tooled calf with the title and editor lettered in gold on the spine a double fillet border on both boards gold-tooled board edges red sprinkled edges. With a half-page engraved plate after a Medieval historiated initial on p. 462. 2 parts in 1 volume. 8 452 2 blank 453-553 pp. Corrected edition of one of the most important sources of British law offering a detailed account of medieval legal practice. The work describes the operation of the courts the forms of writs and the interpretation of legal terminology during the reign of Edward I of England. The work was edited by John Selden 1585-1654 but authored by an anonymous author who is sometimes referred to as "Fleta". However this was not a personal name but a title derived from the works preface which notes that it was written in Fleet Prison. It was John Selden who brought this ancient treatise to the public's attention with the first printed edition in 1647 and his substantial appended dissertation pp. 453-553 which offers rich commentary on Bracton Britton Fleta and related works. It also provides a compelling examination of the influence of Roman Imperial law in England-tracing its introduction application duration and eventual decline within the royal courts at Westminster. While Bracton is rightly celebrated as a foundational figure in the development of English legal thought Fleta deserves recognition for clarifying and illustrating complex aspects of its predecessors work. With the bookplate of John Evelyn 1620-1706 mounted on the front pastedown. The boards and spine are slightly scratched the front joint is somewhat weakened but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The leaves are lightly browned with an occasional stain. Otherwise in good condition.l ESTC R37347; OPAC SBN BVEE068186; USTC 3111172; Wing F-1291; cf. DNB 51 p. 218. hardcover

8vo. (12), 148 SS. - (Vorgebunden) II: Scheffel, Christian Stephan (Hg.). Virorum clarissimorum ad Guntherum Christophorum Schelhammerum epistolae selectiores [...]. Wismar & Stralsund, Samuel Gottlieb Lochmann, 1727. (16), 387, (37) SS. Titel in rot und schwarz gedruckt. Pergament der Zeit mit hs. Rückentitel. Dreiseitiger Rotschnitt. 8vo. - Einband leicht berieben bzw. fleckig. Schwach gebräunt u. stockfleckig. Ehem. Bibliotheksexemplar mit Signaturen, -schildchen Stempelungen. Hayn/Gotendorf II, 20. Holzmann/Bohatta (Pseud.) 11.
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this extremely important compilation of legal and historical writings relating to English legal and political history from Anglo-Saxon times down to the Civil War. 12, 412, 60, 68, 15 pp. LEAVES Nn3 AND Qq4 ARE BOTH PRESENT IN TWO STATES (CANCELLANDUM AND CANCELLANS). This bibliographical quirk is entirely unrecorded: no source mentions any cancels in this volume. Each of the three tracts has a separate title-page, but the pagination is continuous. Printed mainly in Roman types, but with many words and phrases printed in black letter (Gothic) types. The appendix is taken entirely from the Domesday book, and is thus in Latin. The extensive glossary (68 pp) represents an important advance in English legal lexicography. Many terms in this glossary are given in Anglo-Saxon and Middle English. Folio. Beautifully bound in 19th-century half morocco and marbled boards. Binding somewhat worn at extremities, but still very solid and attractive. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT. A rare and important book, perhaps unique in this state.

The fourth and final edition of this Swiss introduction to the art of warfare, also a manual of the Zurich military. First published in 1644, it remained popular for two decades after the Thirty Years' War; all editions are rare. "The book begins with providing the most important loanwords from the field of fortification; this edition is the first also to give the pronunciation of the technical terms [...] Furthermore, Lavater's work is distinguished by discussing subjects which were previously treated rarely, if ever" (HAB). The plates show fortification designs, exercises, battle orders, etc. VD 17 cites only nine folding plates; the copy in the Zurich Zentralbibliothek has a mere eight. - Occasional dampstaining. Some plates and half-title trimmed, front hinge repaired. - Provenance: old library label to front pastedown.
