50665Istanbul: Yeni Kitapçi 1935. Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers by Ali Suavi; 62 2 pp. Very good; only very faint wear and discoloration to wrappers. First edition of this volume of poems by Hikmet with a restrained but clearly avant-garde-influenced wrapper sign by Ali Suavi. In this cycle of poems Hikmet portrayed individual persons from the public as well as his private life. Ali Suavi 1910 or 1913-1994 designed most of the covers of Hikmet's books. Little is known about Suavi who was a famous designer of books and later became known as a photographer. Nazim Hikmet 1902-1963 is considered the founder of modern Turkish poetry who transcended Ottoman versification and absorbed the influence of Russian futurist writers such as Sergei Esenin but above all Vladimir Mayakovsky. Aside from the "step-ladder" form of verse he shared with Mayakovsky his sociopolitical engagement as well as Esenin's love for the simple folk and his origins. Impressed by the 1917 October Revolution in Russia he resisted the occupying powers in Constantinple and fled to the countryside where he sought to connect with various socialist and libertarian organizations. In 1920s he traveled to Russia twice for extended periods of time where he studied in Moscow and was in close contact with Soviet Futurist poets. Upon his return in 1928 he was subject to imprisonment and harsh repressions including a ban on publishing but nevertheless garnered success with readers and created a prolific output while in prison. In 1938 he was sentenced to nearly three decades of jail but was released in 1950 and fled to Moscow exile in 1951 where he was a leading public intellectual and died in 1963. He was not published in Turkey until 1965 and remained nearly unknown in the West for much longer. A very scarce sale catalogue mostly priced; we locate no copy in North America. A later 19th-century pencil inscription in the present copy as well as in two other inscribed catalogues suggests that the contents of this auction belonged to the art collector Hippolyte de Livry 1765-1834 - not to be confused with the author of the same name. Our Hippolyte had previously dispersed a portion of his collection through the expert and art critic Charles Landon in 1814 one sale but in two parts Lugt 8473 & 8515. The present catalogue details 134 lots of paintings by Boilly S. Bourdon Le Brun Guido Reni B. van der Helst Lairesse Largillière Oudry Leprince van Spaendonck D. & A. Teniers Tintoretto J. Thomas "Blind Tom" Wiggins Bethune 1849-1908 an African-American autistic savant and musical prodigy was born a slave on a plantation in Harris County Georgia near Columbus and began his musical career at an early age on his master's piano. At eight Tom was hired out to a promoter who toured him extensively in the United States earning prodigious sums of money; his former master took him to Europe in 1866 for a successful tour there. A series of custodial battles and other problems essentially ended Blind Tom's career in the mid-1890s. "In the wave of euphoria after Manassas Tom turned his hypersensitive ear into the music of the big-mouthed guns. He then framed these sounds with the South's triumphant version of events before composing what many believed was his masterpiece . Tom's impressionistic musical description of the battle pits the harmony of the right hand against the discord of the left. An insistent bass conjures the trudge of marching columns tonal clusters evoke the roar of cannon and musketry. A brooding soundscape then ducks weaves and punches its way into a medley of popular and patriotic songs . discord tugging at the heels of melody until it finally explodes into the chaos of a harem-scarem finale" from Deidre O'Connell's "The Ballad of Blind Tom Slave Pianist America's Lost Genius". The first edition of "The Battle of Manassas" was published in 1866 by Root & Cady in Chicago; this second edition including a catalogue of other war related pieces of sheet music available from the publisher was issued by Brainard's in 1884. Both editions are uncommon in institutional holdings and in trade. Not in Dichter & Shapiro Levy or Wolf. An iconic poster protesting the arrest of the Chicago 8 on conspiracy charges relating to the protests at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The group originally as eight members consisted of Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin founders of the Youth International Party YIPPIES Tom Hayden a co-founder in Students for a Democratic Society Black Panther Chairman Bobby Seale whose case would be declared a mistrial during the trial leading to his exclusion from the Chicago 7 David Dellinger and Rennie Davis members of the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam MOBE and John Froines and Lee Weiner. The address 28 E. Jackson was a building where Rennie Davis rented a space so it is possible that the MOBE printed this though we cannot confirm. unknown books
1897WRCAM43100Circle City Alaska and on a steamer between Juneau and Seattle 1897. 12pp. typed on folio sheets of onion-skin paper plus three hand-drawn maps. A total of some 6750 words. Stapled at upper edge. Three horizontal folds. Near fine. A very interesting pair of typed letters from a young man in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. The anonymous author wrote these two letters to his parents describing his journey overland and by water to the Birch Creek mining district his experiences mining for gold and his decision to go into business as a merchant. The letters are written in a detailed style that indicates an educated author. They include three manuscript sketches showing the routes traversed in Alaska and provide a great deal of information about the writer's experiences in the Klondike. These letters are typed but they were likely originally handwritten by the author who later typed them and included his manuscripts maps and sketch in order to send them to his family when he arrived in Seattle or San Francisco. <br> <br> The letter dated Nov. 10 begins with a description of the writer's boat journey from Juneau to Dyea which was a popular disembarkation point for the Chilkoot Trail to Dawson City a center of the gold rush. He arrived at Dyea on April 23 and notes that "dinner at the Dyea post was the last square meal I have had up to the present date November 10." After dinner he loaded his equipment on horses for the journey inland: <br> <br> "My outfit consisted of about 1000 lbs. of provisions guns amunition sic tools for boat building a whip-saw jack-plane cross- cut saw hand saw rip saw hatchet hammer draw knife brace and bits square etc. and clothing blankets tent sheet-iron stone and in fact I think I had about every thing that ever went down the Yukon. Altogether my outfit weighed about 1302 pounds which is much more than is usually taken into the interior." <br> <br> The author spent the next several days transporting his provisions between Dyea and Lake Linderman and he includes in his letter a sketch of the route from Dyea through the valley to the lake noting several camps along the way as well as a sketch of his sled. <br> <br> The second letter dated Feb. 17 1897 was written on board the steamer Al Ki between Juneau and Seattle. He continues the narrative of his trip inland explaining that he arrived at Lake Linderman on May 14. A month later on June 14 the author and a partner their canoe loaded with provisions departed for Circle City which they reached on June 29. There they stored most of their provisions and headed for the mines in the Birch Creek region. Mining was at its height in the middle of the summer but rather than seek out a claim on their own the author and his companion Jim Wishard decided to work for other miners earning some $10 a day. He describes working at mining from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m. the long days making the task of working at night possible. In August the author bought a claim in the Harrison Creek region but decided to forego mining in favor of establishing himself as a merchant: <br> <br> "From what I could see the miners are poorly supplied with food by the two companies and there is always a great demand for luxuries; that is something out of the ordinary and even the necessaries of life. I made up my mind last summer that I could do as well bringing in some food - in other words being something of a merchant - as in any other way to start and having a good knowledge of the country and keeping my eyes open I would undoubtedly have many good chances for speculation. It is a conceded fact that one cannot lose money taking in such an outfit. Everything brings in an average profit of 400 per cent. over the original cost and whatever any one has to sell in the 'grub' line is in demand." <br> <br> The author then describes his construction of a small cabin in Circle City and his decision soon afterward to leave Alaska for the winter. He describes the trip to Dyea undertaken in January and the hardships of winter overland travel in Alaska. Included are some very practical tips: <br> <br> "In crossing water when it is thirty or forty degrees below zero one should dip his moccasins into the water very quickly taking them out before the moccasin is wet through. They will then freeze in a mass on your feet and will serve the same purpose as rubber boots. You can then walk right through water though I would not advise any one to tempt Providence too much." <br> <br> The letter concludes with a description of a recently discovered gold strike called "Bonanza" not far from the Forty Mile camp. The author describes the high hopes around the strike and includes a manuscript map of the region indicating the location of a claim in which he himself has invested. He hopes that his mine will bring him some wealth but reiterates his belief that the way to wealth in the Yukon Gold Rush is by supplying miners with goods and that he is on his way to Seattle and San Francisco to buy provisions to resell. hardcover books

Seyfart 1727-86 a military administrator was the first to systematically compose biographies of units and generals in the Prussian army. The present work provides detailed histories of units in the order of their creation. It describes infantry cavalry dragoon hussar garrison skirmisher and grenadier units. The finely engraved and large table approximately 520 mm long notes the name of every regiment in the Prussian army at the beginning of 1759 as well as the rank of each unit's ranking officer the colors of the unit uniform many heightened in gold and the number of men and horses. At the bottom of the table Seyfart determines that the Prussian army consists of 204546 men and 38562 horses in 121 regiments. This large vintage photograph showing a horse-drawn parade float model of Shackleton's Nimrod with the ship's name and "Lieut Shackleton in Antarctic Regions" painted on the side. Manning the float are 6 young men and a small boy all in cold weather gear.<br/><br/>It's a wonderful demonstration of the interest in polar exploration during the Heroic Age. Many of the expeditions enjoyed send off and welcome parades and this is almost certainly a relic from one of these for the Nimrod expedition 1907-09. The largest of all parades for the Nimrod was actually held in Lyttleton New Zealand where as many as 50000 people turned out for the send off. Indeed the photographer here Preston was based in Penzance. The image was almost certainly taken by him or his son Richard. <br/><br/>The Nimrod Expedition 1907-9 was Shackleton's first Antarctic expedition as leader - he had previously sailed under Scott on the Discovery Expedition. Shackelton was attempting to be the first to reach the South Pole. Though he failed at this the expedition was notable for reaching the farthest South point just over 100 miles from the pole and for the ascent of Mount Erebus. Shackleton returned to England a hero and was subsequently knighted by Edward VII. unknown books

First edition of this outstanding history of the German campaigns during the Seven Years' War describing the strategies employed during the conflict. Tielke 1731-87 wrote a series of works on military history and science based on his extensive theoretical knowledge as well as first-hand combat experience - he was wounded at the Battle of Torgau. Tielke not only recapitulates the decisive moments of these campaigns he also furnishes case studies regarding tactics artillery and fortification. The present work received much praise for its precise methodology presentation of arguments and judicious use of historical examples. The finely executed plates include highly detailed maps and battle-plans including those for Schweidnitz and Maxen plans and cross-sections of fortifications and charts of formations and their evolution during the course of the battles. Many of the plates contain complex diagrams highlighting trajectories and lines-of-sight and are clearly intended for the instruction of field engineers. A fine copy. ❧ A.D.B. Vol. 38 pp. 286-88. 1863List1004New Hampshire: Printer Unknown 1863. First Edition. Printed broadside 16 ½ x 11 ½ inches archivally mounted and matted. A very good copy with some light toning small closed tear at upper margin light foxing at upper margin very tiny spot of loss to illustration at fold. Franklin Pierce remained politically active upon his return to New Hampshire following his presidency advocating for the Democratic cause and generally opposing the Civil War and Lincoln's policies. This scarce pro-Union anti-slavery broadside printed for the 1863 New Hampshire elections which happened March 12 takes aim at Pierce and his fellow Democrats repeating the unfounded claim first made in 1862 by William Seward that Pierce belonged to the secret Knights of the Golden Circle the secret society formed with the goal of forming a new territory out of the CSA Mexico Central America and the Caribbean. There was never evidence that Pierce had any involvement in the KGC though the society had members in southern parts of some Union states such as Indiana Ohio Illinois and Missouri.<br /> <br /> The broadside printed for the March 12 elections quotes heavily from Pierce as well as the other Democrat candidates and party officials who were either running for office in New Hampshire or involved in politics a group which included Ira Eastman John Goerge Josiah Minot Thomas Treadwell Daniel Marcy William Burns and George Stevens. The broadside includes an engraving of coiled snakes each with these politicians named and the caption "et id omne genus." Eastman the Democratic candidate for governor won the popular vote but lacked the constitutional majority necessary for election. Marcy was successful in his bid for the First District. "Men of New Hampshire!" the broadside asks: "Will you Vote the Ticket Made up by Such Men" with the final line imploring to "Please paste up in a Conspicuous Place." <br /> <br /> Overall an uncommon survival from the 1863 elections. A very good copy with some light toning small closed tear at upper magin light foxing at upper margin very tiny spot of loss to illustration at fold. The 1200 lots are arranged under the sixteen different countries in which these festivities took place except for two amazing special sections: the first catalogues thirty-eight books published between 1515 and 1559 describing festivities and solemnities in honor of Emperor Charles V. The second describes almost 400 pieces concerning festivities held during the French Revolution offered in one lot but catalogued separately on pp. 259-277. Ruggieri d. 1885 was the last of a long line of Royal and Government "artificers" i.e. pyrotechnists which had been founded in 1730 when five Ruggieri brothers transferred themselves from Bologna to Paris. An elegant edition with beautiful typography and ornamentation. <br/><br/>Thomas Corneille 1625-1709: playwright poet. To distinguish himself from his brother Pierre Corneille Thomas was known as “Monsieur Corneille.†He was one of the leading authors who began to produce plays during the Fronde and brought out even more plays than his brother Pierre: thirty-eight plays composed alone or in collaboration. His first tragedy Timocrate 1656 helped to restore the genre to popularity after the troubles of the Fronde. Although he was more attractive in manner and in conversation than Pierre he lacked Pierre's genius. Still "with Quinault he filled the interval in the history of the French drama between the zenith of Pierre Corneille and the advent of Racine" Harvey and Haseltine. <br/><br/>Although not as important a playwright as his brother Thomas wrote with great facility. He is credited with perfecting the French language as can be evidenced by this translation of Ovid begun shortly after he left school his notes to Claude Favre Vaugelas Remarques su la langue Francais 1647 his compilation of a dictionary of arts and sciences for the Academie Francaise 1694 and his editorship of Mercure galant with Donneau de Vise. <br/><br/>The artist of the two engravings fronting the books is the son of Hermann Weyen or Weyher Laurent Weyen 1643-1672 a Flemish engraver who died in Paris. Later signature of Rebecca Ayre on title verso; a person seemingly untraceable it is notable at least this name suggests female ownership over some point in the life of the volume. <br/><br/>First published in 1600 in London by Peter Short dwelling on Bredstreet hill at the signe of the Starre two new editions of the Observations upon Caesars Commentaries appeared in 1604 one issued for Mathew Lownes and one for William Ponsonby and again three more editions appeared in 1609 two are linked to the printers office of Mathew Lownes ESTC S121465 as here and ESTC S91812 and the third ESTC S121472 indicates no publisher. All of the 1609 issues have variations in the titles and imprints as common. Mathew Lownes was a prominent bookseller in London at the Bishops-head in Pauls Church-yard from at least 1595 to 1625; Lowness activity is associated with several important publications on Roman imperial history between 1604 and 1623 which likely put him into the milieu of the author Sir Clement Edmondes d. 1622 who was by 1600 also an influential government official in the House of Commons and City of London. Edmondes wrote his observations on Caesars Commentaries the Gallic and Civil Wars to propagate the ways he believed ancient Roman military tactics might aid contemporary warfare. ODNB and larger scholarship notes that Edmondes carefully molded his remarks and included additional subjective material which was later seen as an attempt to influence the readers experience. This is an important publication thus for exemplifying the intent of some Roman histories written in the early Stuart years. It was popularly received in his time and Edmondes believed his efforts to draw out the true heroism of an ancient republic would help among other ideas the question of how to deal with an invasion of England. The uncommon sale catalogue of the collections formed by the founder of the famous Viennese music publisher. Originally from Lucca Mechetti c. 1745-1811 encountered financial troubles and was forced to sell his collection of thousands of items primarily Italian prints and paintings. In the introduction Mechetti highlights certain pieces in his collection which was apparently not for sale by auction but rather private contract. Pages 113-20 describe a large library rich in books on the arts and history. Nice copy. This copy was inscribed on the inside front wrappers to the amateur geologist Baron de Beroldingen see Zittel. 17776329The Hague but Paris: Gosse et Pinet; Humblot 1777. First edition. Fine/The collected works of Restif de la Bretonne would probably fill an entire wall case. He wrote tirelessly producing some 250 books--a considerable physical task if not the intellectual achievement of some of his contemporaries in the French siècle des Lumières. Restif was a libertine and he wrote quite a lot about sex. He also bravely ignored standard literary forms forging his own way into autobiography polemic essay pornography and fiction leaving trails that are yet to be explored. The volumes offered here in their completely original unsophisticated state form a part of an ambitious series of books that appeared over two decades under the umbrella title "Idées singulières" Modest Proposals an extensive compendium of rules and regulations for the creation of a utopia. Each title in the series proposes a reform project for a particular aspect of society. In the case of Les gynographes that aspect is the status of women in society. While not entirely a 21st-century feminist disappointingly he is unable to exceed received patriarchal attitudes Restif makes some presciently modern arguments including that gender inequality is a social construct and is not biologically determined and that education is the key to gender equality. Indeed the text betrays a disconcerting mix of statements that can be interpreted as misogynistic alongside truly revolutionary ideas about the condition of women in society. Even the 19th-century bibliographer P.L. Jacob notes that "some very singular and very original ideas" occur juxtaposed against "severe and unjust comments" about women. . 2 volumes octavo 22; viii 238; 239- 567 1 pages. An intense portrait of guilt and psychological torment the film based on the life of Robert Ford displays many of the hallmarks of the iconoclastic director's subsequent career. <br/><br/>20 x 15 inches.
