In 1932 James Chadwich proved the existence of th atomic particles carrying no electric charge which for this reason he called 'neutrons' the first item offered here. "In 1934 Senator Corbino head of the physics department at the University of Rome urged Enrico Fermi and his collaborators among whom was Brune Pontecorvo to patent a proces they had perfected for the production of artificial radio-activity by slow neutron bombardement. This process was a by-product of repetitions and enlargements of a discovery by Irene Curie and her husband Fredeic Joliot that the bombardment of certain light elements with alpha particles induced radio-activity. Further experiments conducted in 1938 at Berlin by Hahn and Strassmann were reported by Lise Meitner. She and her nephew O.R. Frisch working with Niels Bohr's laboratory found the true explanation of these phenomena. The interpolation of a neutron into the nucleus of a uranium atom caused it to divide into two parts and to release energy amounting to about 200000000 electron volts. This process bore such a close similarity to the division of a living cell that Frisch suggested the use of the term 'fission' to describe it.Halban Jolio and Kowarski established the theoretical possibility of a self-perpetuating reaction." 19090002367CULLMAN CEDAR BLUFF ALABAMA. Fair. 1909. On offer is a fascinating naïve group of eight 8 original ledgers once owned and handwritten by we believe a doctor named J.P. Wilson of Cedar Bluff Alabama as per an inscription in the 1909 book. That said we cannot be certain as to ownership as there are two possible ownership inscriptions the other in the 1916 book of J. D. King of Cullman County Alabama. Local researchers should undoubtedly be able to confirm the author. Through the years 1909 1910 1912 1916 1918 1920 1924 to 1927 readers will find a trove of date regarding this doctor's practice in Northern Alabama. The information includes a daily tally of patients seen prognosis medicines given and amount what he charged for his services how much the patient paid and the balance owed to him. These also show some of the trades he made for his services. Many of the births and deaths are recorded. All told the books make for what would through forensic analysis of the records a super picture of the available medical care types of treatments ailments and remedies in this rural area of Alabama. Genealogists will no doubt have a fair bit of information. Overall the books are legible though the covers and bindings for the most part are in rough shape. Bindings rather sunned; "Notes" with the wrappers a bit chipped and soiled "Notes" also rather foxed internally because of poor paper quality though the other two works generally quite clean scattered light stains plates with overall mild toning other trivial defects but all still perfectly acceptable in their solid unrestored original bindings.

This is a pleasing group of three early American Dickens printings all in their original publisher's bindings and well preserved when considering the poor state of bookmaking in the United States at the time. Of "Oliver" one of the author's most famous works Day says "the novel's lasting achievement is the symbolic power of the dark underwolrd of the poor. The pitiful figure of Oliver holding out his little bowl and asking for more is an ineradicable symbol of all the needy children in the world pleading for sustenance. In such universalizing lies the magic of Dickens." The work first appeared in America in two volumes published by Lea & Blanchard previously Carey Lea and Blanchard in 1838-39. Our single volume edition followed shortly in 1839 initially in a state containing only two frontispiece etchings and shortly after with the full 24 as here. This copy which retains the original ads before and after the text is from the library of an important Dickens scholar: William Miller was a founding member of the Dickens Fellowship and helped create their journal "Dickensiana." He published a Dickens bibliography "The Dickens Student and Collector" in 1946 and had a large collection of Dickens' works and related ephemera particularly focusing on musical adaptations of Dickens' works. Our copy also belonged to John Beekman Finlay 1810-69 an early president of the First National Bank of Saratoga Springs and a justice of the peace. "Nicholas Nickleby" written during the same period as "Oliver" follows the eponymous character's attempts to get by and to protect his virtuous sister Kate from poverty suitors with evil motives and the pair's cartoonishly cruel uncle Ralph. Day writes that while the plot is "rather hopeless" in this novel "Dickens creates some of the most extraordinary scenes in English literature" with deliciously comic and highly theatrical juxtapositions of character and scene. Originally released in 20 parts by Lea & Blanchard from 1838-39 the present version is the first complete edition released in the United States. Apparently two concurrent states were released one with all 39 of the Phiz illustrations and the second as in our copy with two frontispiece illustrations only. The third work here is probably the most unfavorably received of all of Dickens' books particularly in the States. "Notes" reflects the hearty dislike the author developed for America during his tour there in the winter and spring of 1842. He was disgusted with the Americans' rough-hewn lack of sophistication and especially with the toleration of slavery and the book clearly shows his antipathy. Ours was one of three editions released in November of 1842; there is some disagreement about which of these is truly the first American edition but they all were issued within a few days of each other. Record ID:109832.Notes:The artist's fame stems from his sketches of Parisian society for which Baudelaire dubbed him “the Painter of Modern Life†in the pages of Le Figaro 1863. Widely traveled and a regular contributor to the growing corpus of illustrated journals such as Illustrated London News and Punch he worked swiftly and captured the sense of movement synonymous with modern urban life. This group of figures appears to be gathered in the foyer of a theater or cabaret judging from the row of gas lamps along the upper margin. The women wear small bonnets one a cape the other a jacket over voluminous crinolines a stiff underskirt introduced in 1855 and unfashionable by 1867. They speak to two men in top hats while a third seems indifferent to their presence; other similarly attired men mill about and walk through the background.Provenance:Né en 1906 à Lezay Deux-Sèvres Jacques Cathy a exercé d’abord la profession de caricaturiste à l’hebdomadaire « Le Rire ». 1598001041London: Thomas Creede 1598. First English language edition. . Hardcover. See Description. Small folio. Lacking preliminary blank leaf thus pp. 10 310 292 4. Page numbering is erratic. Leaf Ee3 is mis-signed as F3 but all leaves are present and in order. The title page contains a woodcut vignette/device. Each chapter begins with a woodcut decorative head piece and an initial. Bound in full dark brown modern calf with blind tooled borders and stamps after an early period style. The upper part of the title page is age-toned / tanned; a professionally sealed 7 cm. tear runs from the gutter part way across the upper portion of the title and is difficult to detect on first sight; a couple of tiny chips on the top edge are restored. Interior pages are generally attractive but with occasional mild age-toning and periodic faint marginal damp staining. A small repair patch is present on the inner margins of leaves A6 and V6. A tear on leaf V6 also carefully sealed extends vertically about 8.5 cm from the lower gutter and part way into the text but causing almost no obscuration. Printed by Thomas Creede who is best known for issuing dramatic works including some of Shakespeares plays. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is a translation of "Recueil des choses mémorables avenues en France sous le règne de Henri II François II Charles IX Henri III et Henri IV." This work is generally attributed to either Simon Goulart or Jean de Serres and was first printed in French no place or publisher in 1595 and again in 1598 expanded to include the reign of Henri IV up to the year 1597. See Brunet IV 1161-1162. The second part with new pagination provides translated selections from Pierre Matthieus 4 part "Histoire des derniers troubles de France" first published in Lyons 1594-95. A section at the end is titled "a brief recitall of the most memorable things which came to passé in Fraunce under the raigne of Henry the fourth until the middle of the Yeare 1598" which if written by Matthieu may possibly represent the first printing of some amendments which Matthieu later added to the second edition of his "Histoire" printed in 1600. This collection provides interesting testaments to the wars of religion in France during the 16th century. A separate 4 page tract at the end is titled: "A true discourse concerning the deliverie of Brittaine in the yeare 1598." ESTC S121331; USTC 513796; Lowndes p. 831; Hazlitt Biblio. 184012434London: Robert Tyas 1840. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. 12mo 152pp. illustrated with six plates by Thomas Sibson. A handsome Kelliegram binding by Kelly & Sons of London in full deep tobacco surely! brown crushed morocco with vignette on the front board depicting a hand gingerly taking snuff from a snuff box. The spine title is in typical art nouveau type and the image of a tall walking stick or cane appears down the middle of the spine. All edges gilt silk endpapers modest gilt dentelles and the original wraps bound-in at rear. Mild dust-soiling to wraps and contents and a very slight bend to the bottom of the rear board see image but still a near fine very sound and handsome example. The book is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of smokeless tobacco one of the great addictive pastimes of the 19th century though it is still a major industry. A lovely example in a charming binding which in Kelliegram style boldly announces the book's subject on the front board. An auction record from decades ago described a similar example as a "nicotian Kelliegram" one of a presumably small but recognizable group of tobacco-themed Kelliegram bindings. Delightful.
