19170064001917. Full Morocco. Very Good. Oblong 21 by 30 cm. 92 numbered leaves with content with log entries more or less statistical on all the versos and pictures and/or original drawings mostly mounted on 58 rectos with some additional loose material. 129 numbered leaves in all. Several of the log pages have mounted photos obscuring the log as it is clear that this game book was at some point re-purposed to be a more general album with some emphasis on sports including also fishing foxhunting and sailing but also there are two pages of photos from South Africa with photos of native tribesmen ostriches a hut Cecil Rhodes house etc. 13 original works of art -- watercolored pencil pen and ink -- in addition to numerous painted fish hook and fly vignettes these sometimes done directly onto the page. Most charming are the comical illustrations of anthropomorphic foxes. Sepia photos are of the country estates their stately homes and rural settings of the hunts as well as the people involved -- the hosts and guests during these country weekends. Many but by no means all of the photos have captions helpfully identifying the participants or the locations. And the log proper provides the names of those participating in the shooting and often what would now be regarded as obscenely large kills. Among the many aristocrats and wealthy in the photographs and/or logs are Lady Randolph Churchill Jennie Churchill Arthur Balfour Lady Minto Mary the famous 4th Countess Henry Lascelles the 5th Earl of Harewood the 5th Earl of Carnavon of King Tut fame as well as the owner of the castle used in Downton Abbey Baron Rothschild Lord de Grey Lord Ashburton Prince Murat the Duke of Buccleuch Prince Duleep de Singh Lord Rosebery and on and on. Country homes include Longleat Greystoke Castle the Hirsel Highcliffe Castle etc. Alexander McDonnell was a son of the 5th Earl of Antrim and a clerk in the House of Lords. Obviously he was very well connected and surely very popular among the upper echelons of English society back then. And we would note that many of the most illustriously titled have frequent entries here; what we have here is a window into a cohesive social network it is our sense. Condition: morocco binding has moderate to heavy wear along edges some scuffs on the boards and spine. The leaves can have a waviness the result of the interaction of the mounted material upon the leaves. A few photos are loose. There is a little bit of a scrappy quality to the book as befitting a log book that was partially turned into something much more and this quality is part of its charm as well. unknown

1797006602Keuth an der Crassen 1797. Full Blindstamped Calf. Good. A fine Folk Art manuscript prayer book from the late eighteenth century. 8vo. 17.5 by 10.5 cm. 3 516 13 1 pp. With eight full page paintings plus vignette decoration throughout. Besides the ubiquitous floral ornamentation all pretty accents the vignettes include a serpent a basilisk a skull etc. Most writing is a neat now archaic cursive but headings and the like rendered in an easily readable ornamental Fraktur Gothic. The paintings are the highlight most will find. Their subject matter is quintessential -- Momento Mori Saint Michael slaying the dragon Saint John in the desert Saint Sebastien the Christ child King David playing a harp etc. But while the subject matter may not be unusual the execution is done with uncommon flair even though it is resolutely naive or Folk Art. And the artist who we assume is one or both of the writers may be illustrating popular subjects there are original elements in his/her imagery or imagining of the subject. The authorship is stated but also a tad confusing. Our interpretation is that a Konrad Mueller created the book for Margaretha Pfaden-Hauerin. Condition: moderate wear to contemporary full calf binding. Unusual is a 13 page "Register" or Table of Contents in the rear. By unusual we mean for such a manuscript prayer book. Also a page of handwritten genealogical notes written on a prior blank leaf and written much later in the mid to late 19th Century. Moderate sometimes heavy soiling to margins of leaves. Corner cut out of front endpaper. Some loose gatherings. unknown

19220002248KAMPONG INDONESIA SINGAPORE 1922. On offer is a super original 1922 manuscript diary of a woman who we believe is named Margaret or Mary Discon. While she has not identified herself she does seem to refer to herself at some point in the third person. The diary describes her time spent in Kampong Singapore near Saribue Dolok. Using 8½ x 14 inch sheets of paper folded but loose she describes her time over 17 pages with some photos as titled: "A Day at _____gale." While the first part of the place name is difficult to read we are sure that local researchers and historians will no doubt uncover the location especially given the detailed clues leading up to the spot. Here are some snippets: "It was with gay hearts that we sat in the lamplight making the best breakfast we could with nerves thrilling in anticipation of the days jaunt while the boy and his wife saw to the storing of baskets of provisions; lemons soda waters etc. etc. We stepped into the car as the sun was lighting the east and a cool breeze making coats very necessary. Our days outing had been looked forward to for weeks and the visit of a fellow passenger brought the journey to completion. The jungle sounds were ceasing and domestic animals of all specimens were beginning to stir. First we went through rubber then a long street of palm shaded road through a struggling and picturesque Kampong ." Their car gets stuck in the mud and they have to have the village people dig them out: " .we reached Saribue Dolok which seemed to consist solely of a large store and a missionary's house but they usually have been native Kampong's hidden in the hollows here and there for we saw numerous parties of Balaks silently following each other to the market in Indian file ." They are now on their way to a volcano. Also describes the natives clothing. Back to Kampong. "The Kampong of Harring all lies just above the shore guarded by banyan trees. The rest house is a pleasant little bungalow provided by the Dutch government for visiting officials and lent for a small fee to any traveler. Here we found contrary to repost that a well supplied table was provided .We crossed a small stream the stream was small but gully was broad by a bridge consisting of two thin tree trunks on one side of which was a low rattan rope which gave us help and hardly any confidence ." They finally board a boat and she mentions how the crowds of people started gathering to watch them and has a photo showing just this scene. They finally return to the rest house. The diary pages were folded actually misfolded and the edges of the pages are a bit brittle and chipped with some little loss but overall Fair. . Fair. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. In 1932 James Chadwich proved the existence of th atomic particles carrying no electric charge which for this reason he called 'neutrons' the first item offered here. "In 1934 Senator Corbino head of the physics department at the University of Rome urged Enrico Fermi and his collaborators among whom was Brune Pontecorvo to patent a proces they had perfected for the production of artificial radio-activity by slow neutron bombardement. This process was a by-product of repetitions and enlargements of a discovery by Irene Curie and her husband Fredeic Joliot that the bombardment of certain light elements with alpha particles induced radio-activity. Further experiments conducted in 1938 at Berlin by Hahn and Strassmann were reported by Lise Meitner. She and her nephew O.R. Frisch working with Niels Bohr's laboratory found the true explanation of these phenomena. The interpolation of a neutron into the nucleus of a uranium atom caused it to divide into two parts and to release energy amounting to about 200000000 electron volts. This process bore such a close similarity to the division of a living cell that Frisch suggested the use of the term 'fission' to describe it.Halban Jolio and Kowarski established the theoretical possibility of a self-perpetuating reaction." Except for these anomalies the zoological drawings are quite dramatic and relatively accurate. Jonston's works were frequently re-edited and translated into German Latin Dutch and English. Born in Poland but of Scottish origin Jonston was educated and traveled extensively. He attended St. Andrews 1623-5 studying botany and medicine at Cambridge Leiden and Frankfurt Universities. He earned degrees from Cambridge and in Leiden his M. D. in 1632 where he later practiced medicine and gained a great reputation. In 1642 he briefly taught at Frankfurt as professor of medicine. He retired to his private estate in Silesia in 1655.
