"The National Air Races also known as Pulitzer Trophy Races are a series of pylon and cross-country races that have taken place in the United States since 1920. The science of aviation and the speed and reliability of aircraft and engines grew rapidly during this period; the National Air Races were both a proving ground and showcase for this. -- In 1920 publisher Ralph Pulitzer sponsored the Pulitzer Trophy Race and the Pulitzer Speed Trophy for military airplanes at Roosevelt Field Long Island New York in an effort to publicize aviation and his newspaper. The races eventually moved to Cleveland in 1929 where they were known as the Cleveland National Air Races.2 They drew the best flyers of the time including James Doolittle Wiley Post Tex Rankin Frank Hawks Jimmy Wedell Roscoe Turner and others from the pioneer age of aviation. These air races helped to inspire Donald Blakeslee as a young boy. Other races included in the U.S. National Air Races were the Mitchell Trophy Race the Town & Country Club Race for civilians the Kansas City Rotary Club Trophy "for all three military services" and the Glenn Curtiss Trophy Race for "biplanes with engines having less than 510 cubic inches. Starting in 1929 the races usually ran for up to 10 days usually from late August to early September to include Labor Day. Aviation promoter Cliff Henderson was managing director of the National Air Races from 1928 to 1939. During World War II the races were on hiatus. The races included a variety of events including cross-country races originating in Portland Oakland and Los Angeles with a final destination in Cleveland.4: 79-81 Also included were landing contests glider demonstrations airship flights and parachute-jumping contests. The more popular events were the Thompson Trophy Races which started in 1929; a closed-course race where aviators raced their planes around pylons; and the Bendix Trophy Race the "transcontinental air race" across most of the USA starting in 1931. In 1929 a Santa Monica California to Cleveland Ohio route was started for the Women's Air Derby nicknamed the "Powder Puff Derby" featuring well-known female pilots such as Amelia Earhart Pancho Barnes Bobbi Trout and Louise Thaden. Thaden was the winner in the heavy Class D engines with 510-810 cubic inches 8400-13300 cm3 while Phoebe Omlie won the light Class C engines with 275-510 cubic inches 4510-8360 cm3. This was also the year for the first female pylon race the winner of which was awarded the Aerol Trophy beginning in 1931".-wikipedia. unknown

196077798Long Beach California: Millennium 1960. Among the author's earliest published work this collection of 24 short commentaries warns of the imminent collapse of international capitalism and calls for a "New Age Movement" rooted in cosmic consciousness: "We shall not be concerned about invaders from other planets for our Space brothers of the United Planets shall be helping us to realize our great new dream. No person can leave this planet except in our ships until they have built an energy body by purifying their aura of negation and cleansing their body of organic matter by eating only natural organic foods.â€

Noonan was working as a sign painter in Long Beach California in 1947 when he claimed to have an encounter with alien beings. He described being enveloped by "ultraviolet light entwined with gold threads" and pulled into a spaceship where he had a transcendental experience of being shown his entire life and made aware of spirits guiding humanity and of his own future role in that process. Later Noonan claimed that his first personal contact with alien beings happened in 1954 near Giant Rock in the Mojave Desert when he had an ecstatic experience interacting with three beings that exited a landed spaceship.

Soon thereafter Noonan opened a cafe-art studio in Long Beach called the House of Meditation which reformed in San Francisco during the Summer of Love as the One World Family Commune OWFC. Like other New Age and hippie communities it was largely composed of young people motivated by rejection of capitalism western religion searching for closer connection to nature and acceptance of communal living and non-monogamous relationships. It was during this time that Noonan opened Here and Now the first vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco completely operated by the commune's members.

In 1973 Noonan - who also used the alias Allen Michael - founded The Universal Industrial Church of the New World Comforter and published the first volume of his channeled revelations The Everlasting Gospel which combined UFO beliefs and Christian-based themes of good and evil with New Age concepts of spirituality and higher states of being. By 1975 the commune began decreasing in size and relocated to Stockton California. Noonan as Allen Michael ran for President of the United States in 1980 and 1984 on a Synthesis Party platform advocating for nuclear disarmament. Prior to his death he was living with a handful of aging members and maintaining the Galactic Messenger Network a website for the Everlasting Gospel.

Quarto: 41 pp. Mimeographed on standard 8 1/2" x 11" white stock and bound with staples below a light brown paper title sheet. The couple had three children: 'Margaret Fell. who is now aged 22 resident in California and married to an American Gentleman named Tyson. Cornelia calld sic in honor of the Roman Matron of that name aged 19 and now resident with me in Sydney; and George Washington a very comely youth of 15 also now resident with me'. His wife 'possessed many sterling virtues as a wife a mother and a friend directed by a strength of understanding not commonly found among the females of this country; but she had a will of her own which nothing could change'. Her faults 'were those of a diseased mental organization which increased in strength as she increased in years'. He tried years before to communicate with his correspondent through 'Mr Henderson Linen Draper of Church Street' and now wishes to contact his wife's aunt Margaret. His last letter to his daughter 'has been long unanswered' and he fears 'she has removed with her husband to the Atlantic States'. Initialed postscript on reverse of last leaf apologising for 'the within written unmethodical clumsily expressed production'. Wales 21 Dec: 1865.' and 'Recd. 15 Feb. 1866'. Begins by describing his family: 'We do not occupy a high status here in point of wealth & position; but it has been my own aim through life to establish a character for probity & the unswerving exercise of those moral qualities .'. His daughter Margaret Fell married at the age of fifteen during his absence '& I am sorry to have to add without the sanction & contrary to the wishes & injunctions of her mother'. Describes over two pages his wife's 'chronic dyspepsia . which ultimately reduced her to a state bordering on atrophy' and her attempts to treat herself: 'Her Materia Medica consisted of Oxide & Sulphate of Iron & Carbonate of Soda of which she was in the habit of taking very large doses daily.' At the time of her death the family were living in San Francisco while Murray himself was in Sydney attempting to 'recover by the aid of the law a small freehold property which was in the occupancy of a refractory tenant'. The children went to stay with Murray's brother in Folsom City 'where they remained until I sent my son by my former marriage to bring them on to Sydney on board a vessel then preparing for the voyage for Sydney called the "Ellenita". of the foundering of which at sea you may have read in the papers in the latter part of 1859'. The last eight pages of the letter carry an account of the shipwreck and his children's 'terrific ordeal' . The account begins: 'She had been about a month out of San Francisco & was somewhere in the neighbourhood of the Samoan Islands a group you will find in recent maps of the Pacific. The passengers had just sat down to breakfast in the cabin one fine morning when the carpenter ran affrighted to the cabin with the alarming intelligence that a plank had started & there was then several feet of water in the hold.' Murray's two sons join twelve others on a raft and his two daughters are placed with the Captain on the ship's boat which 'had scarcely room for its living freight. The 2nd. officer & a seaman had forced themselves into this boat in defiance of the Captain such was their horror of the anticipated hardships of the raft . When all the unfortunate men took their places in the raft it sank to the depth of nine inches so that they were constantly to that depth in water. The only provisions and water available for this awful emergency was the small quantity which had been brought on deck for the days consumption . The denisons of the ill fated ship had but just transferred themselves to the ill fated boat and raft when after a few oscillations she settled forward & suddenly went down head foremost carrying with her all their earthly possessions a silver breakfast service belonging to one of the cabin passengers still standing on the breakfast table the good things set for breakfast being almost untouched'. They boat arrives at 'the Island of Saoii one of the Samoan group where the natives are still in a state of semi-savageness' and its occupants are aided by the 'son of Rev John Williams the great Polynesian missionary' and sent on to Sydney. The occupants of the raft were 'certain that their early doom was settled' but were rescued by the brig HMS Elk Commander Hubert Campion.
