According to the legend Hasselaer played a crucial role in the liberation of the city of Haarlem from the Spanish siege in 1573. Possibly copy after the same plate that appeared in the 1709 edition of Famiano Strada's: 'Histoire de la guerre de Flandre de Famianus Strada traduite par P. Du Ryer' or it served as reference to Strada's edition. From unknown publication. The bottom right corner is scratched probably to remove some text or references. 27618Portrait of the Dordrecht rope shopkeeper and historian Mathias Balen included in his 'Beschrijvinge der stad Dordrecht' from 1677. Bale is portrayed in front of a bookcase and an opened book. Towards the right an opened window with a view on Dordrecht. According to the print the portrait is drawn from a painting by Samuel van Hoogstraten however there is a source attributing it to Pouwels Weyts instead: GH Veth in 'Dordrecht Courant' January 1889. The four-line verse under the portrait is by Van Hoogstraten. Signed 'Rom. d. Hoog sculp / S. v. Hoogst´ Pinxit'.NL Portret van de Dordtse touwwinkelier en historicus Matthijs Balen opgenomen in diens 'Beschrijvinge der stad Dordrecht' uit 1677. Zie voor de toeschrijving aan Pouwels Weyts in plaats van Van Hoogstraten: G.H. Veth in 'Dordrechtsche Courant' Januari 1889. Het vierregelig vers onder het portret is wel van Van Hoogstraten. Some citizens on the bottom right are conversing with a cripple sitting in front of the church.Titled above in a panel held by two angels ""TEMPLE D. VIRGINIS / MARIAE VERA DEINEATIO"". Therefore this is the second version of the plate Antwerpen-Kathedraal 3.2 in Guicciardini Illustratus p. 137 which appeared at first in the 1612 Blaeu Dutch edition until Janssonius' in 1648.
