180269953Newport R.I.: Tuesday September 28 1802. Issue no. 2112. Folio approx. 18¾" x 11½" pp. 4; text in quadruple column; previous folds in quarters light staining paper a bit toned 2 or 3 tiny holes else very good. The front page prints a 2-column account from the New-York Evening Post on "Jefferson vs. Callender" concerning payments made by Jefferson to James T. Callender ostensibly to buy the latter's silence and this is followed on page 2 by an early public disclosure taken "from a Baltimore paper" of the long-term sexual "relationship" between President Thomas Jefferson and a woman enslaved to him Sally Hemings. After being refused an appointment to a postmaster position by Thomas Jefferson and issuing veiled threats of "consequences" journalist James T. Callender reported that "the President of the United States keeps and has for many years kept one of his own slaves as a concubine and that he has had several children by her." The article either by Callender himself in the third person or a political ally is signed by "One of the People." Jefferson made no public comment on the matter. The Newport Mercury founded in 1758 by Ann Smith Franklin 1696-1763 and her son James Franklin 1730-1762 the nephew of Benjamin Franklin is one of the oldest in the country. It was likely the first American newspaper edited by a woman and was also first paper to publish poetry by an African American Phillis Wheatley. The paper was published regulary up until the time of the British occupation of Newport in December 1776 and was started up again in 1780 by Solomon Southwick in partnership with Henry Barber. Barber died in 1800 and the paper continued to be published by his wife Ann whose name had appeared in the Mercury imprint as early as 1795 and later their children. Tuesday, September 28 unknown
8725
First edition with Barbier's illustrations. One of 800 on Rives of a total edition of 1200. The poems of Verlaine's Fêtes galantes first published in 1869 took inspiration from the pastorals of Watteau as well as the sumptuous fantasies of Fragonard and Boucher while drawing characters from the Italian traditions of the commedia dell'arte. Barbier's sensibilities made him the perfect artist to reinterpret Verlaine for the 1920s.

Large 4to 300 × 230 mm pp. 4 100 4 plus 20 coloured pochoir plates. Uncut in original wrappers and slipcase the latter slightly rubbed and soiled. Slight stain to front free endpaper just transferring to the very top of the title gutter and tissue guard with very slight loss to the guard. French gift inscription 1967 to front free endpapers. A very good copy.
[Imprimerie nationale for] H. Piazza.

77215Paris not published 1924. Original black ink and watercolour drawing heightened with gold. On fine J. Whatman wove paper. Size 24.5 x 19.0 cm. = A unique original aquarelle by the French artist Georges Augustin Barbier 1882-1932. Barbier was one of the foremost French Art Deco artists. "By epitomizing the more refined fantasies of the Parisian world of pleasure . he became the most haunting of Art Deco book artists" Ray. Barbier illustrated luxurious editions of several books including Les Liaisons Dangereuses Les Plus Belles Heures d'Amour de Casanova and l'Escapade. He also designed theatre costumes but he is perhaps best-known for his haute couture illustrations for such magazines as Journal des Dames et des Modes and Gazette de Bon Ton. The present drawing may well be made for publication in the Bon Ton as it features many illustrations by Barbier in the same style i.e. without a background in order to put emphasis on the model and her clothes. Signed: George as often Barbier 1924. A small blind-stamp of paper makers J. Whatman in the lower left corner and lower left edges a bit irregular for being uncut; some very weak toning but generally in excellent condition. An archetypal Barbier: finely coloured and rich in detail. Ray G. N. The Art Deco Book in France p. 35. hardcover
