1846TB27062New York: S. Tuttle 1846. Reprint . Very good in dark blue cloth covered boards with gilt text on a black leather label on the spine. The edges of the text block are marbled. A thick octavo measuring 8 3/4" by 5 1/2" with mild rubbing to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine. The contents are clean and bright with no foxing or tanning to the pages. 608 pages which are illustrated with 230 engravings a frontispiece and 12 plates following pages 44 116 140 148 220 268 372 424 432 472 508 and 552 Howes calls for 10 plates and the map. The hand-colored yellow red green and blue fold-out map of the state following the front index page 12 is in fine condition with no tears or chips. Howes also does not note this reprint copy of 1846 printed in New York City. Several early prior owner's have penciled their names and made mathematical notes on the end pages. Considered by Howes to be "mildly scarce". Howes B-122; Sabin 3331 A tight handsome and thoroughly complete copy with no prior ownership markings of any kind. S. Tuttle hardcover books

An thick octavo measuring 9" by 5 1/2". The pages are lightly spotted with foxing throughout particularly around the outside margins and there are occasional notations in ink by an early prior owner. 608 pages which are illustrated with 230 engravings a frontispiece and 12 plates following pages 44 116 140 148 220 268 372 424 432 472 508 and 552 all by the author. Howes calls for 10 plates and the map. The hand-colored fold-out map of New York following the front index page 12 is in very acceptable condition with a 3" long tear at the left margin and a 3" long closed tear at one of the lower folds of the map both professionally repaired. Several early prior owner's have penciled their names and made mathematical notes on the end pages. Considered by Howes to be "mildly scarce". Boards nearly detached but cords sound bit chipped at head and toe of spine. Foxed else internally quite good. Describes 119 significant events in the history of America many of them illustrated in the attractive plates followed by a chronological list of events a list of colleges in the U.S. biographical sketches of famous figures in history etc. Howes lists the first edition as 1828 with an undated Boston printing following but does not note the present edition nor does Sabin. This is the fourth edition listed in the NUC with only two locations given one of the which Library of Congress lacks the map. AMERICAN IMPRINTS adds three more locations. SABIN 3326 ref. Near fine in a recent 1/2 brown leather and marbled paper covered boards with gilt black leather text block with gilt text stamping on the spine and new end sheets. A small quarto measuring 9 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches. The contents are in excellent condition with 624 pages of text with occasional spots of foxing to the pages throughout. The hand-colored four-color fold-out map is in place following the front index and is in near fine condition with a tiny 1/4" closed tear at the lower margin. Cover title: Barber's Illustrated Proverbs<br /> 12mo; 252pp; brown ribbed cloth blind-stamped decorative frame around a gilt-stamped title gilt lettering and vignette on spine; pale yellow endpapers ownership on ffep; five-panel leporello frontispiece; wood-engraved illustration at the beginning of each chapter; scuffing to boards with loss at head & tail of spine and corners foxing but clean and without odors; very good. Twenty illustrations appear on the five-panel frontispiece titled "The Proverbs of Solomon King of Israel." Four of the illustrations use proverbs to warn against alcohol fitting in with the Temperance social movement that was growing in strength at this time. One surprising illustration warning against evil has a couple surrounded by roses with the woman's breast exposed. Sixty-two illustrated chapters each with a traditional not biblical proverb a description of the illustration and an explanation of the wisdom. The end of each chapter lists many other common or simple conventional truths that relate to the one highlighted.<br /> <br /> A thought-provoking look at common cultural wisdom during the 19th century.
