This text served to guide the transition of the Navy into a peacetime force after the War of 1812 laying out detailed instructions for various ranks and positions from yard personnel and warrant officers to high-ranking officials. It covers a wide array of topics including ship maintenance naval ceremonies discipline and provisions as well as specific instructions for surgeons pursers marines and midshipmen. The regulations also provided for the handling of convoys and established clear guidelines for salutes military honors and other ceremonies. This text played a crucial role in shaping the growth structure and discipline of the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century especially during the presidencies of James Monroe John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson.

This particular copy belonged to the famous USS Peacock a sloop-of-war that played a significant role in the U.S. Navy during the early 19th century! Commissioned during the War of 1812 it was part of various naval operations including suppressing piracy in the Caribbean and patrolling South American waters during regional independence movements. After decommissioning in 1827 it was rebuilt for exploration and participated in the United States Exploring Expedition in 1838 eventually meeting its end on the Columbia Bar in 1841. The ship also took part in diplomatic missions such as conveying Francis Baylies to Argentina and engaging in treaty negotiations in Asia. Throughout its service the Peacock navigated various challenges including severe weather conditions and health crises among the crew. The fascinating post-war exploits of the USS Peacock's diplomatic and explorational missions are recorded in American diplomat Edmund Robert's notes that were published in 1837 under the title "Embassy to the Eastern Courts of Cochin-China Siam and Muscat in the U.S. Sloop-of-war Peacock".

Item number: #41562

Price: $2500

CROWNINSHIELD Benjamin Williams; BOARD OF NAVY COMMSIONERS OF THE UNITED STATES

Rules Regulations and Instructions for the Naval Service of the United States: Prepared by the Board of Navy Commissioners of the United States with the Consent of the Honorable the Secretary of the Navy; In Obedience to an Act of Congress Passed Seventh February 1815 Entitled "An Act to Alter and Amend the Several Acts for Establishing a Navy Department by Adding Thereto a Board of Commissioners."

Washington: E. 1797List2522New Orleans 1797. Three pages of a bifolium 8 x 9 ½ inches New Orleans; May 31 1797. Fair only with moisture damage and some text illegible. Fair. An interesting document from the period following the Treaty of San Lorenzo and before the eventual surrender of Natchez to the Americans in 1798 in which the governor of Louisiana and West Florida Francisco Luis Hector de Carondelet issues a statement regarding the delayed withdrawal of Spanish troops from the region. Carondelet is concerned with the British presence in the area and notes that it is a violation of “the treaty concluded with Spain†- or Pinckney’s Treaty which opened up navigation rights of the Mississippi to the United States. The letter describes the possibility of escalating hostilities between the United States Great Britain and Spain as a result of an impending American mission against the Illinois the motives of which Carondelet questions as he notes that “These hostile dispositions can naturally only concern these provinces because the U.S. are in peace with all the savages…†He raises the possibility of British invasion of Louisiana and potential danger to the city of New Orleans and states that the Spanish will maintain their presence at Natchez and Walnut Hills unless the American soldiers withdraw. This is a copy of Carondelet’s speech in the hand of Lieutenant Piercy Smith Pope and we find no other record of it. A full transcription follows:

“The Government being informed by his Majesty’s Ambassador to the U.S. that an expedition assembled on the lakes was intended to attack the Illinois has judged necessary for the surety and tranquility of Lower Louisiana to suspend the evacuation of the posts of Natchez & the Walnut Hills being the posts that cover it; the possession of which will put the English in a situation to disturb and ravage the country in case they rendered themselves masters of upper Louisiana with so much more facility as by an article of the treaty concluded posteriously with Great Britain the U.S. acknowledge that the English may freely navigate and frequent the posts belonging to the said States; situated on the river in general lakes &c being a manifest contradiction to the treaty concluded with Spain which it appears. because by this the U.S. acknowledge that no other nation can navigate upon the Mississippi without the consent of Spain.

. the legitimacy of these motives the .presented to the Congress of the U.S. with all the necessary veracity and intimated by our orders in the Commissary of Limits as well as to the Commandant of the Detachment of American troops now at Natchez. We are now informed that a detachment of the army of the U.S. cantoned on the Ohio are on their way by Holstein towards Natchez while the Militia of Cumberland are intimated to hold themselves ready to march at the first notice.

These hostile dispositions can naturally only concern these provinces because the U.S. are in peace with all the savages the anterior menaces of the Commissary of Limits & the Commandant of the detachment of Americans now at Natchez; the immediate rupture & if the American Gazettes are to be believed already effected between France our intimate ally and the U.S. engage us to be on our guard to defend our property with that valor & energy which the inhabitants of these Provinces have manifested on all occasions with the advantage and superiority which a knowledge of our local situation will procure and that confidence which right and justice inspires. If the Congress of the U.S. had no hostile intention against these provinces they will either leave the post of Natchez or Walnut Hills the only bulwarks of Lower Louisiana that can stop the courses of the English or that they give us security against the article of the Treaty with Great Britain which exposes lower Louisiana to be pillaged and destroyed down to the Capitol. We will then deliver up the said posts and lay down our arms which they have forced us to take up by arming their Militia in time of peace and sending a considerable body of troops by round about ways to surprise us.

New Orleans 31st May 1797

A copy of the Baron de Carondelet’s Proclamation.
P. Popeâ€

Overall a document of significance in United States / Spanish relations in the period following Pinckney’s Treaty worthy of further study for scholars of the diplomatic history of the period. unknown
53906The late Patrick Eddington was a Utah artist and former high school art teacher who had as a goal the desire to create “The Cat Project†where literary and visual artists from around the world were asked to produce original works about cats which would be included in a traveling exhibition and book unfortunately never realized. Doris Lessing 1919-2013 born in what was then Persia now Iran spent her childhood years in southern Africa. The author of nearly 50 books she received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature becoming only the eleventh woman to receive literature’s most prestigious award in its 106-year history. Her works are often viewed as in-depth studies of twentieth-century living conditions behavioral patterns and historical progressions. Her masterwork is considered to be The Golden Notebook a postmodern feminist work published in 1962. Interestingly Lessing who was a devoted cat lover throughout her life is also the author of a book which conjures up the subtleties of feline existence On Cats. With regards to this small archive it is significant that this rather busy Nobel-Prize winning author would provide Eddington a high school art instructor and small press printer with a piece of original prose regarding cats supplied specifically for him at a relatively low cost.

Included in the archive are the following:

TLS. Letter 8†x 10†from Doris Lessing to Patrick Eddington sent from London and dated 17th January 1986. A letter in which Lessing discusses her feelings with regards to one of her earlier works “A Small Personal Voice.†Eddington had recommended it to a friend and Lessing claims “The trouble is I wrote some of it a long time ago and I no longer agree with a lot of it. I wonder if she would like to read something more recent I wrote and read five lectures for C.B.C. under the title of Prisons We Choose to Live Inside. This represents what I think now not what I used to think in the ‘fifties.’†Signed “Yours Doris L.†at the foot.

ALS. Letter on a sheet of paper 7†x 9†written by Doris Lessing to Patrick Eddington. Not dated. In the brief letter Lessing thanks Eddington for the book by Barbara Kingsolver and writes “I am glad u sic like Brian Aldiss. He is one of my favorite people.†She closes the letter assuring Patrick that if she writes something suitable regarding the subject of cats she will remember him.

TLS. Brief letter 8 ¼†x 11 ¼†from Doris Lessing sent from London and dated January 6 2000 addressed to Patrick. Lessing opens with “OK I’ve done a short piece. It is not a question of being paid but of time- am as usual in the middle of something. I don’t need a thousand dollars… Perhaps 500 I don’t need a Navajo rug….†Signed by Lessing.

Typed letter 8 ¼†by 7 ¾†from Lessing’s literary agent Jonathan Clowes to Patrick Eddington dated 10 January 2000 written in reference to the piece written by Doris Lessing titled “About Cats.†Clowes writes “We are happy for you to use this piece for the sum of $500 and perhaps you could let us have further details of your publication so that we can send you a permission contract for non-exclusive rights in the work. In particular please let us know which territories the book will be published in and how many copies will be printed.†Signed by the literary agent at the foot.

Typed manuscript signed 8 ¼†x 11 ½â€. “About Cats†by Doris Lessing. The original piece that Lessing sent to Patrick Eddington titled “About Cats†containing periodic manuscript corrections made by the author. Cat lovers will immediately recognize this as a keenly insightful succinct piece regarding the precious feline’s nature. Within the work the author muses “People who do not observe their cats but only rely on ‘received’ wisdom miss out. A cat gives back what you put into it returning affection and attention but withdrawing in dignified silence if ignored. No creature is more sensitive to slights and taunts and even teasing. Too much and they will take themselves off in search of a more sympathetic home. And yet one may not generalize: people who have had more than one child know that every baby is born different and similarly in a litter of kittens each one will be an individual. Like humans they are coarsegrained and sensitive stupid and clever clinging and standoffish. They may be talkative and silent show-offs and modest introverts.â€. unknown

186085724Chicago: Charles Leib 1860. Very Good. Four-page newspaper. A couple of small holes various brown spots and other bits of minor wear A campaign newspaper for Abraham Lincoln in the Presidential Campaign of 1860. We note a half-column story on the front page of this issue that accuses Senator Douglas of being a Roman Catholic -- a charge based partly on the fact that Mrs. Douglas was a Catholic as were their children -- probably an effective charge in largely Protestant mid-19th century America. Our brief research suggests that Douglas was neither a Catholic nor a formal member of any other organized religious group. The purpose of another half-column story on the front page was to make it clear that Lincoln had publicly condemned the actions of John Brown and did not object to Brown's execution. Charles Leib the editor was a political operative with an unclear background who had previously edited a Democratic campaign newspaper on behalf of the Buchanan campaign in 1856. Leib served briefly as an Assistant Quartermaster in the Union Army before heading to New Mexico probably in 1863 and died there in 1865 at the age of 38. Charles Leib unknown

An outstanding Victorian dos-a-dos parlour photo album from a seemingly notable and well-to-do Minneapolis Minnesota family in the Gilded Age. On the “Blue†side the album opens with albumen boudoir-sized art photos of early Toronto including a “birds-eye†view. The first boudoir photo includes a ink manuscript list of “a few interesting dates†with mentions of Edward Murphy Jr. settling after 8 weeks passage presumably Ireland in Toronto followed by his family of 9 in 1837. Other dates mention settling of George & James Walker in Toronto 1837 Andrew joining the Volunteers on the Frontier and in 1843 Edward opening his business a “98†Long Street and building of the Terauley Street House near present-day Univ. of Toronto Toronto General Hospital etc. There are additional dates and note that John Walker and family “went West†in 1846 but unfortunately for this cataloguer there were a myriad of Edward Murphy’s John Walker’s and similar named families none of whom seemed to match either the entry date points. Only documentary evidence was that an Edward Murphy Jr. appears in the 1837 Toronto ONT street directory. Edward’s business appears to have been prosperous as this album incorporates a wide range of studio photographers during the Gilded Age from San Antonio to Chicago Milwaukee to Minneapolis. Two of the albumen studio photos 1 boudoir 1 cabinet interestingly depict a montage of smaller cabinet photos capturing all the images of Company A First Regiment N.G.S.M. or the storied Minnesota First Regiment National Guard at the time commanded by Captain John Amory. The Minnesota First Regiment is perhaps best remembered for their heroic charge in 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg and in the subsequent decades never lacked for sufficient recruits. The mounted CDV of an unidentified Civil War Corporal is included in the album and may have been from either the Murphy or Walker sides of the family if the internal MS notes are to be referenced. Of special interest are the four wonderful albumen cabinet photos depicting the N.S. Toboggan Club -- North Star Toboggan Club founded in 1886 and formed for tobogganing sporting events during the Saint Paul-Minneapolis Winter Carnival as well as competing against the Makwa Club Flour City Club and Snowshoe Club on their individual Toboggan slides -- basically uncontrolled and fast ice luge racing. The North Star Club’s slide was West of Minnesota on Glenwood Hill in what is now Theodore Wirth Park. The toboggan slide was probably located near where ski jumps were built later after the area became Saratoga Park then Glenwood Park and finally Theodore Wirth in 1909. The group shot provides first names or monikers of the eight intrepid toboganners in Feb. 1887 and the three individual ones depict Boyd Ballard & Dane all wearing their price ribbons from the competitions. Many of the extended family members were captured by such Minnesota studio photographers as H.A. Anderson who operated at 428 Nicollet and was the successor to H.R. Farr; the very popular James A. Brush whose studios tented to move up and down Nicollet Ave. and Hennepin Ave. from 1875-1890; G.W. Floyd who first partnered with Power and then expanded to three studios himself on Fifth and Hennepin; and William H. Jacoby 1841-1906 who with his son C.L. Jacoby produced the Minnesota First Regiment Christmas souvenir montage photos and was active until his death in California and even partnered with Haynes for a while and perhaps best remembered for his robbers’ portraits of the participants in the famed “Northfield†robbery. The photo of “Father†probably Edward Murphy Jr. while in San Antonio TX on business was taken by the Paris & Rothwell studio operated by Arthur C. Paris and Isaac N. Rothwell on 11&13 West Commerce until 1892. In his letter Henry Clay the Speaker of the House introduces the Colombian diplomat Manuel Torres to Secretary of the Treasury William Harris Crawford. "Allow me to present to you M. Torres who was also an economist proposed a new way by which to make revenue collection and spending more efficient. Calhoun was considered one of the "Great Triumvirate" of Congressmen.

The American politician William Harris Crawford 1772-1834 served as U.S. Secretary of War and subsequently as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.

The Colombian diplomat publicist and economist Manuel de Trujillo y Torres 1762-1822 became Colombia's first Ambassador to the U.S. being received by President James Monroe in 1822. This was the first recognition by the U.S. of the independence of a former Spanish colony. He foresaw the economic depression of 1818-1819 which was largely caused by the dwindling reserve of gold and silver and championed the importation of specie from South America to bolster both the U.S. and Colombian economies. In 1818 through his rapport with Henry Clay he suggested to Congress that he'd discovered a new way of making revenue collection and spending more efficient. He would reveal his approach if he was promised a share of the savings. The proposal was referred to the House Ways and Means Committee but they found it too complex.

"Foreseeing the calamitous results of a specie shortage Torres early championed the importation of specie from South America. His plan was supported by Langdon Gheves president of the second bank of the United States and by others who realized that the economic depression of 1818-1819 was largely caused by the dwindling reserve of gold and silver. William Duane editor of the Philadelphia Aurora and a personal friend of Torres roundly abused the government for neglecting the opportunity to procure many million dollars worth of specie from Mexico and South America specie 'which would have averted the present distresses of the nation.'" "The crusading editor was determined that Torres' ideas for fiscal reform should not go unnoticed. In a letter to Secretary of State James Monroe Duane expressed hope that Torres would be permitted to reveal to the Department of State 'some financial views which I consider of the greatest value and worth the attention of the Government.'" . "On April 1 1818 Henry Clay brought before the House of Representatives a memorial stating that Torres '. had discovered that the United States sustains great loss in the receipt and expenditure of the public revenue; and that he . had also discovered the means by which this loss may be avoided.' Torres offered to submit his findings 'upon the assurance of receiving a portion of the moneys which may be saved to the public by means of . said discovery.'" Quoted from Charles H. Bowman Jr.'s article "Financial Plans and Operations of Manuel Torres in Philadelphia" published in "Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia Vol. 82 No. 2 June 1971 pp. 106-116.
Washington, 28th March, 1818.

He was born into one of the oldest families and perhaps most notable. He inherited a legacy of high ambition and accomplishment going back to the family’s early settlers in the United States—Barnard and Michael Gratz. The Gratz Brothers were most enterprising in shipping land acquisition and trading which allowed for the cementing of the strong and influential relationship between the family and the city. Simon’s father Edward Gratz was known for his activities with the construction of the Pennsylvania Railroad and his most famous aunt Rebecca Gratz for her ‘charm’ and philanthropy†Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The author Jonas Ennery 1801-1863 was a French deputy. He was for twenty-six years attached to the Jewish school of Strasbourg of which he became the head. In collaboration with Hirth he compiled a Dictionnaire Général de Géographie Universelle 4 vols. Strasburg 1839–41 for which Cuvier wrote a preface. Soon afterward he published Le Sentier d'Israël ou Bible des Jeunes Israélites Paris Metz and Strasburg 1843. At the request of the Société des Bons Livres he took part in the editorship of Prières d'un CÅ“ur Israélite which appeared in 1848. In 1849 despite anti-Jewish rioting in Alsace Ennery was elected representative for the department of the Lower Rhine and sat among the members of the "Mountain." He devoted his attention principally to scholastic questions. After the coup d'état he resisted the new order of things and was exiled for life in 1852. 195912811959. Very good. Original working manuscript of "Getaway John" from the album At Large handwritten by Dave Guard founding member and leader of The Kingston Trio. Titled at top with chord symbols full musical notation in treble and bass clefs and complete lyrics written in phonetic spelling for singing pronunciation in dark pencil with several neat revisions and corrections and erasures throughout; on recto of a 12" x 16" sheet of yellow 12-staff manuscript paper. Measure numbers and structural notations appear at bottom. Guard's complete arrangement of the traditional folk ballad previously recorded by the Carter Family in 1929. John Hardy was an actual historical figure executed by hanging in West Virginia in 1894 for the murder of a man following a card game though the killing apparently stemmed from a love triangle. The ballad's final verse references Hardy's religious conversion during his imprisonment when authorities permitted him to undergo baptism in a river on the morning of his execution.

The Kingston Trio achieved immediate commercial breakthrough in 1958 with "Tom Dooley" which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 sold six million copies received the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording 1959 and earned induction into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. The single's extraordinary success catalyzed the folk revival that dominated American popular music through the early 1960s establishing commercial viability for performers including Peter Paul and Mary Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. This folk boom subsequently enabled the development of folk rock when groups like The Byrds and The Animals electrified traditional arrangements during the mid-1960s but the genre's mainstream acceptance originated with The Kingston Trio. Guard the sole member possessing musical literacy and notation skills functioned as the group's principal arranger and architect of their distinctive sound until his departure in 1961. unknown
