Otherwise a good copy. Extremely rare first Armenian edition of Fenelon's "Telemaque". According to Abdolonyme Ubicini's account in his La Turquie actuelle (Paris 1855), Les Aventures de Télémaque was the most popular classic among Levantines in Istanbul in the first half of the 19th century, and it was translated into many languages besides Turkish and Arabic in the Ottoman Empire. The first printed version of a Greek translation dates from the 18th century, while an Armenian version by Ambroise Calfa was published in Paris in 1860. The translator, Ambroise Calfa Nar Bey, Guy de Lusignan, (1831-1906), was a Franco-Armenian historian and linguist from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Ambroise Calfa is one of the three sons of Kévork (Georges) -Youssouf Calfa, an Armenian trader living in Constantinople, and Sophie Cantar (or Kantaroglou), daughter of an Armenian merchant or banker from the Ottoman capital. Member of several learned societies, including the Asian Society, Ambroise Calfa published several historical or linguistic works, including an Armenian Calligraphy (Paris, 1853), a work awarded at the Universal Exhibition of 1855, and, above all, an Armenian-French Dictionary ( Paris, Hachette, 1861) dedicated to Emperor Alexander II. Les Aventures de Télémaque, fils d'Ulysse (The adventures of Telemachus, son of Ulisses) with the original title is a didactic French novel by Fénelon, Archbishop of Cambrai, who in 1689 became tutor to the seven-year-old Duc de Bourgogne (grandson of Louis XIV and second in line to the throne). It was published anonymously in 1699 and reissued in 1717 by his family. The slender plot fills out a gap in Homer's Odyssey, recounting the educational travels of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, accompanied by his tutor, Mentor, who is revealed at the end of the story to be Minerva, goddess of wisdom, in disguise. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph handwritten document sealed 'Hüsrev Mehmed' sent to (and responded by) Serkâtib Mustafa. Written in special paper with 'ahar'. 39x21 cm. In Ottoman script. Slightly tear on folded place and slightly stains. Otherwise a very good manuscript paper. The document was written in accordance with the Ottoman state correspondence tradition prior to modernization. However, it is an indication of modernization that it is written to the serkâtib of Humâyûn (head clerk of the Ottoman / Turkish court) and not to the Sultan directly. The importance of this document is that it has many hints of modernization movements of the last period of Empire, depiction of the division of the first modern Ottoman army (Asakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye) that's before one year of Egyptian Campaign by Koca Husrev Pasha and before eight years of proclamation of Reform (Tanzimat) and after only 22 years of Turkish Magna Carta (Sened-i Ittifak). Husrev Pasha was 'serasker' (commandant and head) of Assakir-i Mansure-i Muhammediye Army in that year. Husrev's text starts as 'Devletlü, inayetlü, atufetlü, oglum.." in 'Elqab'. In the Ottoman diplomacy, first person who used 'oglum' [i.e. my son] in elqab of the documents was Koca Hüsrev Pasha. (Source: Osmanli Arsiv Belgeleri, Orhan Sakin). Koca Hüsrev Pasha (Khosrew Pasha) was an Ottoman Kapudan Pasha ("Grand Admiral") of the Ottoman Navy and statesman who reached the position of Grand Vizier rather late in his career, between 2 July 1839 and 8 June 1840 in the reign of Abdülmecid I. However, during the 1820s, he occupied key administrative roles in the fight against regional warlords, the reformation of the army, and the reformation of Turkish attire. In 1801, Hüsrev Pasha commanded the 6,000 Ottoman troops who assisted the British in removing the French from Rashid (Rosetta). For this, he was made governor of Egypt Eyalet (province), in which position he was charged with assisting Hüseyin Pasha in the killing or imprisoning the surviving leaders of the Mamluks. Many of these were freed by or fled with the British, while others held Minia between Upper and Lower Egypt. [.] He was later made governor again by Muhammad Ali for 2 days [.] After Diyarbekir and Salonica, in 1806 he was governor of Bosnia Eyalet, before being reappointed as governor of Salonica in 1808. Hüsrev Pasha held the rank of Kapudan Pasha of the Ottoman Navy from 1811 to 1818. He was then appointed governor of the Eyalet of Trabzon twice, during which time he conducted for the Black Sea region of Turkey the struggle the central Ottoman state was waging against local feudal rulers (Derebeys). During the Greek War of Independence, he was appointed Kapudan Pasha again in the end of 1822. In 1826, Husrev Pasha played vital roles both in the Auspicious Incident (the annihilation of the Janissary Corps in 1826) and in the formation of the new "Mansure Army" modeled after those of European Powers. Appointed as seraskier (commander the army) of the Mansure in May 1827, Husrev reformed and disciplined the corps. Himself ignorant of modern military methods, he assembled a staff of foreign experts and other personnel to assist him, the "Seraskeriye", which constituted the first staff in Ottoman history. Due to his early championing of military reform and virtual control over the new Ottoman army, Husrev was able to install many of his protégés in senior military positions. Husrev Pasha was also instrumental for the near-abandonment of the turban and the adoption of the fez as a universal headgear for Muslim men of the Ottoman Empire (excluding the religious classes) under Sultan Mahmud II. Following the suppression of the Janissaries in 1826, Sultan Mahmud II transferred the functions of the old Agha of the Janissaries to the seraskier.

"Büyük Adamlar Serisi" [i.e. The "Big Men" series], consisting of about 41 small books, all of which were published in 1927, by a delegation under the presidency of the body and some of which were written by him personally, filled an important gap on 'biography' field in its period. This delegation includes Ali Resat, Tezer Agaoglu, Galip Ata Ataç besides Gövsa. This small book is the first and ever biography of Darwin in Ottoman literature. Exceedingly rare first edition with original illustrated covers of this first Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) biography in the Turkish literature prepared by famous Turkish author Resat Nuri Güntekin. A reversed color example of Ibsen caricature by the Norwegian artist Olaf Leonhard Gulbransson (1873-1958) on the front cover. Immediately after the proclamation of the Republic in Turkey (1923), biographies of the artists and the literary figures who represent modernism and translating the works of these pioneers into Turkish gained momentum. This rare Ibsen biography is one of them. This biography of Henrik Ibsen, one of the founders of modern theater and often referred to as the "father of modernism", whose plays were translated into Ottoman Turkish, was compiled from French sources and made some annotations and additions by Resat Nuri who one of the most significant writers of the Republic of Turkey. Resat Nuri Güntekin was a Turkish novelist, story writer, and playwright. His best-known novel, Çalikusu [i.e. The wren, or the autobiography of a Turkish girl]. First and only edition of this exceedingly rare first book on Muslims and Islam in the Comoro Islands of Africa, located in the Mozambique Channel to the north-west of Madagascar and facing Mozambique, including Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Ndzuwani (Anjouan), Mwali (Moheli) and Mayotte (Maore) Islands. The book gives detailed information about the races, customs, and traditions of the natives of the archipelago, the introduction of Islam to the islands, and how influential it was on the people as well as on their education, social structure and the population of the archipelago. The work carried out in the context of missionary activities is also discussed in detail, and such information is supported by photographs, statistical tables and chronology of the islands. According to the information given in the work, Muslims first came to Yuhana Island in 750 AD and began to settle on the island. Since 854, there are claims that the Ismailis, a Shiite community, and then the Fatimid prince came to the islands and ruled for a period. Especially Arabs, Iranians, and Indians, who came and settled on the islands mostly for trade or travel, introduced Islam to the islands' natives, strengthened their ties with marriages and thus increased the population and influence on the islands and became instrumental in the establishment of Islam. Okday also describes the process of French exploitation that started when Comoros fell into the hands of the French, each of whom was under the control of the Malagasy despite England and Germany, and got the support of their pirates. This book has rich and attractive photos of natives of the archipelago, and other peoples who lived on the islands like Arabs, traditional homes and streets, Sultan Ahmad of the Comodo, statesmen and clergies, Prince Said Mohammad, women, and a French ship named 'La Bourdonnaise' as well as four maps showing the African continent and each of the islands. Ismail Hakki Tevfik Okday was an Ottoman intellectual and military commander, who participated in the First Balkan War, the Great War, and the Turkish War of Independence. He was born in Athens as the son of Ahmet Tevfik Pasha, who was then the Ottoman Ambassador to Greece, and later became the last Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Lithographed Edition. First and Only Edition of this first Turkish book exclusively related to America. This very rare work (both in scarce institutional holdings and market rarity) is the first book in Turkish to describe the discovery and conquest of America. Thus, it is an important and early source on America in the Islamic world. "The first treatise [in Turkish] dedicated exclusively to America" (Strauss). It is printed in a format that is specific to the early printing period of the Ottoman Empire and is written in a tâliq script and has the appearance of a manuscript. It has neither a preface nor a proper title. The heading (serlevha) on the first page which is placed in a decorative floral design reads: "First chapter: On the Islands Discovered by the Venetian and Genoese seafarers, and, secondly, on the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus". It also contains the mandatory praise of the ruler, i.e., Sultan Abdülmecid, and indicates that it was "translated and transferred from some selected writings (ba'z-i evrâk-i müntahabe)". The dramatic events of the discovery and of the different conquests by the Spaniards are vividly described in plain and simple language. Though it is not free from clichés adopted from Western sources, the darker aspects of the European expansion are not omitted. Particular interest is devoted to the fauna and flora of the American continent. The modern territorial divisions of the American continent, and briefly, its political history, are dealt with in a special chapter at the end of the book. This chapter comprises information about both North and South America from the Polar Regions (Arazi-i kutbiyye) and "Russian America" (Amerika-i Rusiyye) to the Banda Oriental (Banda) or the Cisplatine Republic (Çisplatin) and the Province of Patagonia (Patakonya Eyaleti). It takes into account the latest developments. The last event referred to is General Soulouque's takeover in Haiti. "[.] ?in Santa Domingo (Sen Domeng), i.e., the island of Haiti, a general from the Negro people appeared in the Frankish year of 1847 and beat the Spaniards and the French. Assuming the title of 'king', he is known today as Faustin I." (p. 54). In fact, General Soulouque (Emperor of Hayti, (1782-1867)) had assumed the title of 'Emperor' in 1849. Ismail Galib was the son of Ibrahim Edhem Pasha and the pioneer numismatist in the Ottoman Empire, who is considered the father of modern numismatics in Turkey. "Ismail Galib, his brother and a pioneering numismatist in his own right studied coins from the Seljuks of Rum and published a catalog entitled 'Takvîm-i meskûkât-i Selçûkiyye'..." The Seljuk Sultanate of Rum was a Turko-Persian Sunni Muslim ruled state, established over conquered Byzantine territories and peoples (Rûm) of Anatolia by the Seljuk Turks following their entry into Anatolia after the Battle of Manzikert (1071). The sultanate's monetary sphere of influence lasted long and coins of Seljuk mint, generally considered to be of reliable value, continued to be used throughout the 14th century, once again, in the Islamic world including by the Ottomans. This extremely rare huge map includes all railways, highways and other roads; Turkish borders with Iran, Russia, Greece, cities and their borders, printed shortly after the declaration of the republic in 1923. This is the first complete road map of the Republican period. The Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning is a government ministry office of the Republic of Turkey, responsible for the environment, public works, and urban planning in Turkey. The Ministry was formed in 1983 through the merger of the Ministry of Public Works (Turkish: Bayindirlik Bakanligi, formed 3 May 1920) and the Ministry of Development and Housing (Turkish: Imar ve Iskan Bakanligi, formed 1958). Antonio Zelic (Zellich) of Brela was one of many Dalmatians who left his homeland in pursuit of a better life during the 19th century. However, instead of going west, he set out toward the East, to the Ottoman imperial capital - Istanbul. Upon arrival in the city on the Bosphorus, Zelic found employment at the lithographic print house of Henri Cayol, the first of its kind in the Ottoman Empire. In 1869, Zelic opened his own lithographic print house called "Zellich and Sons" (A. Zellich et fils). His descendants continued his work with great success, and the Zellich Print House, now known as "Zellich Brothers" (Zellich frères), became one of the most renowned in the Empire. Zellich Brothers won recognition due to the high quality of their products, and, above all, the amazing beauty of their postcards and posters. Their crowning achievement was an order for the printing of the Ottoman Turkish Lira banknotes in 1914. Zellichs received many Ottoman and international awards, including medals conferred by the Pope, the Persian shah, and the Serbian king.". Osman Sevki Bey was one of the first radiologists in the country and one of the founders of the Turkish Medical History Institute. He received the first author and medical historian title with his works titled "Osmanli tabâbet tarihi" (1918) and "Bes buçuk asirlik Türk tabâbeti tarihi" (1925). In 1921, he took the role of X-Ray Specialist of Bursa Tuberculosis Dispensary from Dr. Refik Bey (Saydam), Minister of Health. He revealed that the Yildirim Darüssifa Hospital in Bursa was the first hospital established by the Ottomans in Anatolia. This is the first comprehensive book on the Turkish / Turkic medical history from its beginning to the present including folk medicine in the Central Asian Turkic tribes to Seljuks, Anatolian medicine to the Principalities period, and Ottoman period. Ottoman Turkish ex-library stamps on title page, Cr. 8vo. (19 x 12 cm). In Ottoman script. 270, [2] p. Mehmet [Muhammed] Izzet, who was born in the Kulaksiz district of Istanbul at the beginning of the 18th-19th century, taught mathematics and algebra at the Mühendishane between 1274-1275. He worked as a translator at the Mühendishane for a while. He was later assigned to repair Jeddah waterways. He passed away while on this duty. There is a beautiful Medine-i Münevvere painting in the Hirka-i Sa'adet flat (Topkapi Palace) by Muhammed Izzet, who also has the rank of the district governor. This work was prepared by Darüssafaka "Cebr-i Ala and Hendese-i Resmiye" with teacher Mehmet Emin Bey, under the provincial Idadiye schools and to be taught in the seventh classes. Özege 08841 / 01. Early edition of this extremely rare encyclopedic book of the first comprehensive Ottoman engineering including the firsts in Ottoman literature of science, especially on various subjects of modern physics and mechanics, cartography, map making, surveying, arrangement of army camps, construction of pulleys, cannon shooting, etc. This book was written by Hüseyin Rifki, who was the chief professor of the Mühendishâne [i.e. Ottoman Engineering School] and was assigned to Medina, Arabia in 1816 to repair the holy buildings in Medina, Arabia. Another important aspect of the book is that it contains the ratios between the measurements used in various European countries before the meter system and the Ottoman measurements, as well as French measures and scales. Early typographic imprint on European paper with a watermark. Hüseyin Rifki translated the ancient mathematician Euclid's book Elements, in which he laid the foundations of geometry, from the English original of the English mathematician John Bonnycastle (1760-1821) in 1789, into Turkish with the name of "Usul-i Hendese", together with Selim Efendi, a converted English engineer. He was appointed as "Engineering-i Berri-i Hümâyûn Serhocasi" [i.e. The Chief Professor of the Engineering School] after the Code of Engineers was put into effect in 1806. He served as the chief teacher between 1806 and 1816. He was sent to the Balkans in 1816 and then was assigned to repair the holy buildings in Medina, Arabia. Very Good Turkish Original silver gelatin photographic print mounted on cardboard. 53x42 cm (Photo size: 38x30 cm). Signed by Yildiz Moran. Yildiz (Vahid) Moran Arun was born on 24 July 1932, in Istanbul. She is the youngest of three children born to Nemide Moran and Ahmet Vahid Moran. Her father, Ahmet Vahid Moran, was a military officer who served in important positions both at home and abroad. He was the writer of Turkey's very first English-Turkish dictionary printed in Latin script in 1924. In 1950, Yildiz Moran quit her high school education during her final year at Robert College and, following the guidance of her uncle, the art historian Mazhar Sevket Ipsiroglu, went to Great Britain to study photography. After completing her education at Bloomsbury Technical College (1950-52) and Ealing Broadway Technical College, she began to work for John Vickers, the acclaimed photographer of The Old Vic. Moran combined her technical and theoretical knowledge with the practical experience she gained at the studio and stage shoots. She had the opportunity to meet famous artists of the time. The exhibitions and works she saw during her time in Great Britain helped her develop her photographic vision. Following her internship period, she began to make a living taking portrait and lobby photographs. She opened her first exhibition in 1953 in Cambridge. In 1954, she held four more exhibitions in London. All these shows attracted much attention. In her first exhibition, her entire collection was sold. She went traveling in Europe. After making a photo book on Spain and Portugal, she returned to Turkey in 1954. Between 1955 and 1962, she held five solo exhibitions. In 1963, she married Özdemir Asaf (Halit Özdemir Arun) and gave birth to three children in four years. She dedicated the rest of her life to her children. She opened her last exhibition in 1970, in Istanbul. After that, she only took part in retrospective exhibitions. She quit her professional photography career and began to work as a translator and dictionary writer. Between 1981 and 1987, she prepared the complete works of Özdemir Asaf for publication and translated some of his poetry and prose into English. In 1982, the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts Photography Institute awarded her with honorary membership on account of her contributions to the art of photography. Lyrically conveying a universal language through her own perspective, Moran became a school in herself with her "timeless" photographs. Turkey's first academically-trained photographer, Yildiz Moran is renowned for the new vision and aesthetic she introduced into photography and considered to be one of the best photographers of all time. Masterfully combining the tradition of the East with the aesthetic of the West, she left behind a legacy of black and white photographs beautifully composed to capture the world of light and shadow reflecting on people and lands. Considering the conditions in the world of photography in the 1950s and 1960s, it is a great achievement that she defined at the age of 20 her passion for photography as the foundation of her life, became the first academically-trained woman photographer in her country, acquired in-depth knowledge of the discipline and combined this knowledge with her talent and hard work. "The camera must be like an extension of your being so that it doesn't create an obstruction between you and your subjects. Anything that has poetry in it is the subject of photography. My only intention has always been to photograph what was universal while staying true to the concept embodied by my subject." Yildiz (Vahid) Moran Arun was born on 24 July 1932, in Istanbul. She is the youngest of three children born to Nemide Moran and Ahmet Vahid Moran. Her father, Ahmet Vahid Moran, was a military officer who served in important positions both at home and abroad. He was the writer of Turkey's very first English-Turkish dictionary printed in Latin script in 1924. In 1950, Yildiz Moran quit her high school education during her final year at Robert College and, following the guidance of her uncle, the art historian Mazhar Sevket Ipsiroglu, went to Great Britain to study photography. After completing her education at Bloomsbury Technical College (1950-52) and Ealing Broadway Technical College, she began to work for John Vickers, the acclaimed photographer of The Old Vic. Moran combined her technical and theoretical knowledge with the practical experience she gained at the studio and stage shoots. She had the opportunity to meet famous artists of the time. The exhibitions and works she saw during her time in Great Britain helped her develop her photographic vision. Following her internship period, she began to make a living taking portrait and lobby photographs. She opened her first exhibition in 1953 in Cambridge. In 1954, she held four more exhibitions in London. All these shows attracted much attention. In her first exhibition, her entire collection was sold. She went traveling in Europe. After making a photo book on Spain and Portugal, she returned to Turkey in 1954. Between 1955 and 1962, she held five solo exhibitions. In 1963, she married Özdemir Asaf (Halit Özdemir Arun) and gave birth to three children in four years. She dedicated the rest of her life to her children. She opened her last exhibition in 1970, in Istanbul. After that, she only took part in retrospective exhibitions. She quit her professional photography career and began to work as a translator and dictionary writer. Between 1981 and 1987, she prepared the complete works of Özdemir Asaf for publication and translated some of his poetry and prose into English. In 1982, the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts Photography Institute awarded her honorary membership on account of her contributions to the art of photography. Lyrically conveying a universal language through her own perspective, Moran became a school in herself with her "timeless" photographs. Turkey's first academically-trained photographer, Yildiz Moran is renowned for the new vision and aesthetic she introduced into photography and is considered to be one of the best photographers of all time. Masterfully combining the tradition of the East with the aesthetic of the West, she left behind a legacy of black and white photographs beautifully composed to capture the world of light and shadow reflecting on people and lands. Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. During the same period, he also served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1861-77) and Belgium (1861-75). In 1876-78, he was ex officio a member of the short-lived Senate of the Ottoman Empire. Well educated, in 1883 Mousouros translated Dante's Divine Comedy into ancient Greek. He was married and had a son, Stephanos Mousouros, who later became Prince of Samos. (Wikipedia). He is known as the first translator of Dante's Divine Comedy into modern Greek. Musurus Pasha had an intellectual identity. One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work, the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. It's signed and inscribed by Musurus Pasha with a dedication in French to Monseigneur Auguste Bonetti as "A la grandeur Monseigneur Bonetti, Hommage de veneration, Musurus". The wars and struggles fought by the Vardar army, a branch of the Western army called Câvîd Pasha branch affiliated to it, are explained day by day with four plans in this work in a plain language, and information is given about the situation of the Ottoman army, its deficiencies, the difficulties experienced during the war, and thus the difficulties of the war and the deficiencies of the Ottoman army. Extremely rare first and only edition of this early Wien imprint of the "Book of Isaiah" translated into Ottoman script. It is the earliest example of three imprints in Adolf Holzhausen Printing House of Wien, in the Ottoman Turkish language according to the Özege catalogue. Adolf Holzhausen (1868-1931) was an Austrian publisher and bookseller. He was the son of Adolf Holzhausen the Elder (1827-1892), the head of the Viennese court, and the university's book printing company. He was trained in the family business (his father had owned the Manzsche book printing company since 1858). Holzhausen learned the typesetting of oriental scripts, and also provided the company with oriental letters. He later founded the university book printing company and his own publishing house, which mainly published art books and historical works. After the First World War, he was promoted to the head of the Military Geography Institute. Also, he suggested that Austrian educational book publishers worked together. It's an abridged translation into Ottoman Turkish but the first illustrated edition in the Ottoman / Turkish literature. According to the preface written by a translator named Mehmed Ali, whose biographical information could not be found in the literature, it is understood that he was a primary school teacher in the Ottoman period. He stated that during his teaching period, he translated some selected books from western literature from their original languages ??and read them to his students. His students said that they liked Robinson Crusoe the most, and Mehmed Ali translated and published the entire book upon his students' request. Halid Ziya was born in Izmir, Tire. He went to Istanbul and continued to Hendese-i Mülkiye and Engineer Mekteb-i Âlîsi for seven years. After starting with "Aydin Province Umur-i Nafia Third Class Engineering", Halid Ziya Bey, who continued to work as a deputy chief engineer on 14 March 1910, left Aydin and returned to Istanbul after continuing this duty for about six and a half months. As a teacher, he taught Accounting, Algebra, Geometry, and Topography at Halkali Ziraat Mekteb-i Âlîsi and Darussafaka. Halid Ziya Bey, who was appointed as a teacher of Hendese and Cosmography in Kabatas High School, started to practice the profession of engineering and cadastral, which was his main specialty in 1327. After the First World War, the Istanbul Government started its activities in order to capture and neutralize Halid Ziya Bey and his friends. Upon the harsh measures taken, Halid Ziya Bey had to live as a fugitive in the Hasirci Mountains of Eskisehir for a while with the armed force attached to him. Halid Ziya Bey, who was involved in the movement in Anatolia until the end of the National Liberation Struggle, returned to his engineering duty after the proclamation of the Republic and was included in the cadastral works again. In 1925, Halid Ziya Bey was appointed as the Head of the Science Committee of the new cadastre organization. He wrote 5 books on cadastre, photogrammetry, trigonometry, and cadastral tools in 1928 and 1929. In addition, as a result of personal work in 1928, the road between the provincial division of the Republic of Turkey with cities, has prepared a comprehensive map to show up in the forest and mining. The Scopes trial (1925) fuelled discussion in the United States on the social and political implications of Darwinism. For the defenders of the 1925 Tennessee law - which prohibited the teaching of Darwinism in schools - Darwinism was, amongst other things, responsible for the German militarism which eventually led to the First World War. This view was supported by Ismail Fennî, a late Ottoman intellectual, who authored this book immediately after the trial which aimed to debunk scientific materialism. In it, he claimed that Darwinism blurred the distinction between man and beast and thus destroyed the foundations of morality. However, despite his anti-Darwinist stance, Ismail Fennî argued against laws forbidding the teaching of Darwinism in schools and emphasized that even false theories contributed to the scientific improvement. Indeed, because of his belief in science, he claimed that Muslims should not reject Darwinism if it were supported by future scientific evidence. It is composed of 7+1 chapters to criticize the materialist and positivist philosophical movements and especially the work of the positivist German philosopher Ludwig Bücher 'Kraft und Stoff'. The first part of the book focuses on the evidence presented of the proof of god in the Western and Islamic philosophies. In the second chapter, the issue of immortality of soul and spirit is addressed. In the third chapter, 'the wahdat al-wujud' (vahdet-i vücûd) current is examined. The fourth chapter, examined some famous scholars' thoughts about the matter, materialism, laws of nature, etc. In the fifth chapter, the work of the positivist German philosopher Büchner 'Kraft und Stoff', in the sixth chapter, monism (monism), in the seventh ch. positivism is criticized. In the last ch., there are descriptions and some thoughts on the theory of evolution and the Indian fakirs (fakers). Ismail Fenni Ertugrul was a Turkish mystic, philosopher, writer, musician, lyricist, and composer. He studied traditional madrasah education and learned Arabic and Persian. He was in various state posts. After the retirement, he began to be interested in poetry, music, and philosophy.
