Though small it is a condensation of a larger number of bulky volumes and articles in European and American medical periodicals. It has been specially compiled for use with the companion work" The Art of Practice.". No publication date listed but several passages mention using x-rays meaning this book was published after 1895. For example page 123 advises the following for ringworm: "X-raying is the quickest and most certain treatment but there is doubt about the safety even when used by experts. Internally clean. <br/><br/><em>First German edition of this milestone in mathematical statistics first published in Latin as "Theoria motus corporum coelestium in sectinibus conicis solem ambientum. 1809." - In this work Gauss revealed for the first time his method of least squares. On January 1 1801 the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi discovered the planetoid Ceres but could only observe it for few days before it was lost in the glare of the Sun until the end of the year. After so many months of not being observed it was not possible to calculate with existing methods at which position it should reappear. However Gauss at an age of 24 astounded when he in December predicted the exact location at which Ceres again could be observed. Gauss did not reveal how he had calculated the orbit of Ceres. First in 1809 Gauss published his second book "Theoria motus corporum coelestium in sectionibus conicis solem ambientium" the offered item in which he revealed his new method of orbit calculation. In the first part he dealt with differential equations conic sections and elliptic orbits while in the second part the main part of the work he showed how to estimate and then to refine the estimation of a planet's orbit using a new method involving minimizing the sum of squared residuals e.g. the method of least squares. He was able to prove the correctness of the method under the assumption of normally distributed errors. It is here that the Gaussian curve expressing statistical distribution in probablility makes its appearance. This work along with the 'Discuisitiones' was the fruit of the triumphal decade in Gauss' life and established his reputation as a mathematical and scientific genius of the first order. "Before he was thirty years of age Poincaré became world famous with his epoch-making discovery of the "automorphic functions" of one complex variable or as he called them the "fuchsian" and "kleinean" functions." DSB.These manuscripts written between 28 June and 20 December 1880 show in detail how Poincaré exploited a series of insights to arrive at his first major contribution to mathematics: the discovery of the automorphic functions. In particular the manuscripts corroborate Poincaré's introspective account of this discovery 1908 in which the real key to his discovery is given to be the recognition that the transformations he had used to define Fuchsian functions are identical with those of non-Euclidean geometry. His results applied only to restricted classes of functions and Poincaré wanted to generalize these results but as a route towards this he looked for a class functions where solutions did not exist. First editions and first publications of these epochmaking papers representing the discovery of "automorphic functions" or as Poincaré himself called them the "Fuchsian" and "Kleinian" functions."By 1884 Poincaré published five major papers on automorphic functions in the first five volumes of the new Acta Mathematica. When the first of these was published in the first volume of the new Acta Mathematica Kronecker warned the editor Mittag-Leffler that this immature and obscure article would kill the journal. Guided by the theory of elliptic functions Poincarë invented a new class of automorphic functions. This class was obtained by considering the inverse function of the ratio of two linear independent solutions of an equation. Thus this entire class of linear diffrential equations is solved by the use of these new transcendental functions of Poincaré." The United Irishmen trials of 1798 represent one of the most decisive and tragic episodes in Anglo-Irish history. Formed in the spirit of Enlightenment republicanism and inspired by the revolutions in America and France the United Irishmen sought to unite Catholics and Protestants in pursuit of Irish independence. Their efforts culminated in a widespread but ultimately unsuccessful rebellion met with swift and brutal suppression by the British state. In the aftermath a series of treason trials targeted the movement's leadership and sympathisers both in Ireland and England. Among the most prominent figures were Theobald Wolfe Tone whose eloquence and martyrdom became emblematic of the republican cause; the Sheares brothers Henry and John executed for their role in planning the uprising; and Oliver Bond John MacCann and William Michael Byrne each tried and condemned in Dublin. In London James O'Coigly operating under multiple aliases was executed for carrying seditious correspondence while Arthur O'Connor and others narrowly escaped conviction. These trials preserved in Cobbett's State Trials offer a vivid record of revolutionary ambition state paranoia and the high cost of political dissent. They mark the final chapter of the 18th-century Irish republican dream and the beginning of its long legacy. 434 pages printed in double columns. Legh Richmond who "was powerfully influenced by William Wilberforce's Practical View of Christianity and took a prominent interest in the British and Foreign Bible Society the Church Missionary Society and similar institutions. In 1805 he became assistant-chaplain to the Lock Hospital London and rector of Turvey Bedfordshire where he remained till his death on the 5th of May 1827. The best known of his writings is The Dairyman's Daughter of which as many as four millions in nineteen languages were circulated before 1849. LUKE HOWARD FRS 1772-1864 was a British manufacturing chemist and an amateur meteorologist with broad interests in science. His lasting contribution to science is a nomenclature system for clouds which he proposed in an 1802 presentation to the Askesian Society. He was born in London the son of Robert Howard a lamp manufacturer and educated at the Quaker school in Burford Oxfordshire. He was a Quaker later converting to the Plymouth Brethren and became a pharmacist by profession. After serving an apprenticeship with a pharmacist in Stockport Cheshire he set up his own pharmacy in Fleet Street in 1793. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1821. He spent the years 1824 to 1852 in Ackworth Yorkshire West Riding . He died in Tottenham London. He had married Mariabella Eliott 1769-1852; they had several children including John Eliot Howard FRS chemist and botanist. 8vo.
