1864100729<p>April 25 1864 through October 26 1874. 1864-1874. 1864-1874. Very good. - The three Autograph Letters Signed by Congressman Samuel F. Miller and additional material consist of:</p><p>1. A 4-page letter dated April 25th 1864 penned on four sides of 7-7/8 inch high by 5 inch wide "United States of America Thirty Eighth Congress" stationery. Congressman Miller congratulates Lieutenant Holden for his "Honors". He states that the election of a Copperhead President "would be such a national calamity" and supports Lincoln in the upcoming election. He would however have "no objection to a more radical man or rather to Mr. Lincoln taking a more radical policy." Miller says he would like a list of men from the District who would like to receive "speeches or documents". He would be "grateful" for "any influence that you can bring "for his next election" and presumes "That the voice of the soldiers from the Dist would have a great influence at home." Signed "S.F. MIller". Folded for mailing with some darkening along the vertical center fold and minor foxing to the front edge of the first page. Very good.</p><p>2. A second letter this one 3 pages dated June 27 1864 penned on three sides of 8 inch high by 4-7/8 inch paper with an integral leaf. Congressman Miller writes to Lieutenant Holden regarding the Emolument Law which would provide African American soldiers fighting for the Union with the same equipment benefits and pay as other soldiers "We have had a great excitement in the house over the amendment of the Emolument Law. There have been a large number of propositions brought forward & voted down. Lately Smithers of Delaware introduced a bill in the way of a substitute that only lacked two votes of passing - if it can be brought up again on motion to reconsider I think it will pass this morning. The bill struck out the communication clause. I suppose the army will not find fault with this but I expect a howl at home. Yet the bill I think is as well drawn as can well be to sugarcoat the bitter pill." Miller pens his close and signs vertically along the left border of the first page "S.F. Miller". Folded vertically and horizontally with some darkening along the vertical fold and slight minor foxing. Very good.</p><p>3. The war has ended and between these 2 letters and the last former Congressman Samuel F. Miller now holds office as Collector of Internal Revenue for the 19th District of New York with Stephen Holden as Deputy Collector. A 4-1/4 inch high by 7-1/2 receipt dated August 25th 1869 for the sum of $78.75 received from Deputy Collector Stephen Holden and signed "S.F. Miller" as Collector of Internal Revenue. Additionally endorsed with Miller's name and the date on the verso. Apparently once mounted with remnants of an article adhering to the verso the receipt is folded horizontally with some minor soiling or foxing. Very good.</p><p>4. An autograph letter signed by Samuel F. Miller dated October 26 1874 and penned on 9-3/4 inch high by 7-5/8 inch wide paper is again addressed to Stephen Holden. Referring to his upcoming Congressional race Miller thanks Holden for his interest and trusts "that you will be able to secure me all the votes that belong to us in Shelbourne & Columbus." He mentions that he has received the support of the Temperance party in Afton NY. Signed "S.F. Miller". Additionally endorsed with Miller's name and the dates "Oct. 27 1874 And Oct. 28" on the verso. Folded vertically and horizontally with some minor foxing to the edges and an indentation at top left. Apparently once mounted with remnants of paper adhering to the verso. Very good.</p><p>5. A 2-3/8 inch high by 1-3/4 inch wide portrait of "Capt. Stephen Holden / Washington 1865" printed on a 9-1/2 inch high by 6-1/4 inch wide page removed from a publication. The top left corner is stained and there is a hole to the top right corner with a chip out from the front edge. Good.</p><p>The law equalizing the pay of Black Soldiers was passed on June 18th 1865. Section 2 of the law reads: "And be it further enacted That all persons of color who have been or may be mustered into the military service of the United States shall received the same uniforms clothing arms equipment camp equipage rations medical and hospital attendance pay and emoluments other than bounty as other soldiers of the regular or volunteer forces of the United States."</p><p>Not to be confused with the Supreme Court Justice the U.S. Congressman from New York Samuel Franklin Miller 1827-1892 initially served as a member of the New York State Assembly and as a colonel in the State militia. He was elected as a Republican to the 38th Congress of the United States serving from 1863 to 1865 and subsequently served as a member of the State Constitutional Convention in 1867. Hardwick established a reputation as a church architect designing the church of St Mary the Virgin at Wanstead completed in 1790 the Hampstead Road Chapel 1791-1792 St John's Wood Church St John's Wood High Street 1813-1814 and the church of St Barnabas now St Clement near Old Street. Arguably his most notable work is the church of St Mary Marylebone Road 1813-1817.<br /> Dance was an architect draughtsman and founder member of the Royal Academy. This portrait comes from a series of chalk portraits that he did of his friends 72 of which were engraved and published 1808-1814 by Daniell who was an engraver as well as a renown landscape painter. Accompanied by original descriptive text. Some faint foxing. unknown

Presumably he read this book while attending Cambridge following his military service in WWI. Upon front free endpaper is a 5 x 5cm printed label which reads "From the library of J.B. Priestley". Many years later Priestley wrote Found Lost Found which featured a hard-drinking protagonist named Thomas Dekker. According to a clipping circa 1893 affixed to half-title the author of the plays in this book had the same name and 'No man of the day was more familiar with the tavern the debtors' prison and the brothel." Thus it would seem this book had a lasting impact upon Mr. Priestley. Above-average wear to olive green cloth-covered boards. Hinges starting. Moderate lean to spine. Binding intact. Signed in pencil upon half-title by prior owner Dr. Oscar Clark d.1913 whose decorative bookplate is mounted inside front board. Notes: Josiah Wood Whymper RI 1813 – 1903 was a British wood-engraver book illustrator and watercolourist. Born the son of a brewer Whymper was apprenticed to a stonemason. He soon turned to drawing and painting settled in London in 1829 and studied under William Collingwood Smith 1815–1887. After having an etching of London Bridge published he became well known as an illustrator and worked for Black for the 1857 edition of poetic works of Walter Scott John Murray Cassell and other publishers. His wood-engraving enterprise became one of London's most successful. He also painted watercolours specialising in riverscapes and gave drawing classes to pupils such as Charles Keene 1823–1891 John William North 1842–1924 George John Pinwell 1842–1875 and Frederick Walker 1840–1875. He also produced fine engravings of animals fish landscapes and wonders of the world for the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge sold for 3/4d penny plain 2d pence coloured. In 1846 Whymper made thirty engravings about dramatic natural phenomena such as the aurora borealis whirlpools and icebergs.
