Kenealy the disgraced barrister turned editorial crusader. These papers are not passive reportage; they are the printed artillery of a man who refused to let the Tichborne verdict stand. Kenealy having been ejected from the courtroom and Parliament alike took to the press with messianic fervour. The Englishman became his pulpit his battlefield and his confessional. Focus is mainly on those close to the person in question and their attempts to hide the situation even from the patient. An extract from a foreign periodical is included in the footnotes describing how a doctor called to investigate a case of insanity will often feel like a detective in that he must disguise his intentions from the patient and surrounding community. The author wonders why friends and family often put off calling a doctor in and refuse to speak candidly about the patient's suffering since in cases of mental health time is of the essence and every detail is important. Ships daily.<br><br>In this report the Superintendent describes keeping order and discipline in the institution through banishment or seclusion of any patient that disturbs the peace. He cites a case in which a young girl did so and was removed from the privileges of refined society and pleasant associations. After she promised to practice more self-control he restored her to her former position and she speedily recovered causing no further problems. The superintendent later explains that he has lost confidence in the pledges of the patients to control and behave themselves as the nature of their condition may unexpectedly excite them or compel them to violence. The superintendent discusses in his report the problem of friends and family discharging patients before they are fully recovered. This deprives the patient of treatment during the "best period" and most end up returning to an institution of some sort sooner or later. In addition patients who are discharged early tend to have negative sentiments toward the institution in which they received treatment and owing to the "morbid condition of their minds" may speak erroneously of the workers and conditions there.
