1870B428London: Smith Elder & Co 1870. First UK Edition. Hardcover. Good . From Goodreads:<br /> "The Struggles of Brown Jones and Robinson 1861-2 is Trollope's satirical attack on abuses in advertising. Told by 'One of the Firm' it is the tale of a foolhardy junior partner of an ill-fated haberdashery store. Formerly a bill-sticker Robinson wishes to spend the firm's entire capital on advertising to 'broadcast through the metropolis on walls omnibuses railway stations little books pavement chalkings illuminated notices porters' backs gilded cars and men in armour'. Although Robinson's devotion to inflated and dishonest advertising is the target of Trollope's satire Robinson is none the less presented as an attractive and sympathetic character. Trollope wrote of Brown Jones and Robinson 'I think there is some good fun in it'. The novel is an amusing comedy bearing the hallmarks of Trollope's better-known novels - clever dialogue riveting moments of drama and comic suspense."<br /> This copy has an interesting history. The story was originally published in serial for in 1862 in Cornhill Magazine. An American publisher Harper and Brothers produced an unauthorized edition in book form in the same year. No English edition in book form was published until this edition eight years later.<br /> <br /> The copy is good in the original publisher's brown cloth with gilt and black titles and decoration on the spine and gilt and black designs on the covers. The front hinge is cracked exposing the stitching but the binding is thus loose but still holding. The covers have minor scuffing and wear primarily at the corners and spine edges. The bookplate of the noted Trollope collector Roger Dow is affixed to the front pastedown and there are small ink notations from a previous owner at the top of the front pastedown and ffep. No other marks or damage. Text is slightly age-toned. LB. Smith, Elder & Co hardcover
