Rare. <br/><br/>This is a well-known but uncommon work on country living covering all aspects of domestic economy in 19th century Campagne by a Member of the Society of Horticulture and Agronomy at Paris. Part 2 not present here covers gardening and fruit trees. The 1822 first edition in 2 vols. is rare. Vicaire cites editions in 1825 1836 1845 and 1852 but not what appears to be this edition. The cookery book has an index the confectionary book has a table of contents. Condition is GOOD ; covers spotted and worn with small slits at the ends of the front joint and the front joint mostly detached fron spine holding at the rear. Endpapers have some tears and have tape repairs. Binding of the text remains quite solid however. Paper spine label worn and illegible. Text a bit toned with some very faint water stains but quite readable. Recipes for gruel flummery jugged hare moss cake ratafia acorn bread etc. RRGR Lea and Blanchard hardcover

Illustrated with engravings." There are several versions of thiis uncommon book all with the date 1854. This Lowenstein 606. Recipes include Boiled Pig's Head to one ofr Vanilla Ice cream which requires beating "the cream hard for half an hour". Originally this book was in damaged boards with a illustrated pastedown on orange paper green cloth spine with printed ads to the front and rear pastedowns. This copy has been rebound in dark green cloth and reproductions of the original pastedowns have been retained as pastedowns on the front and back covers. As well the original ads to the backs of the front and back covers have been retained and adhered to new endpapers. The interior pages are in very good condition with a small edge tear to the last page of the index. An attractive rebound copy; no Dj as issued. 1.1 JM HOQ 101/4. Hardcover. It contains a selection of pages from throughout the actual book with a section at the end giving space for folks to sign up to buy the book. Much scarcer than the actual White House Cook Book as only a relatively small number were printed for this special purpose. USA Edition Not Stated This is an early edition rebound in dark red cloth with a tiel block adhered to the spine new end papers the pages are generally clean with some foxing to the preliminaries the book is complete except that the lower half of all the index pages from 459 to466 are missing as well pages 457/ 58 showing the meat cuts on the sheep and pig are torn in half but not missing there is some rubbing and loss of page material to the first blank page and last page Good refurbished condition. 19 x 11.5 cm dark red cloth spine label with gold titles 468pp. This book appeared first in 1837 and this edition incorporates 38 additional recipes. It was after the success of her book entitled SEVENTY-FIVE RECEIPTS IN CAKES PASTRY AND SWEETMEATS that the author started this more ambitious work "designing it as a manual of American housewifery .avoiding the insertion of any dishes whose ingredients cannot be procured on our side of the Atlantic". All the recipes are quite clear set out in the old way where the ingtedients are not first listed. The chapters on sweetmeats cakes pastry and puddings syllabubs blancmange and ice cream warm cakes preserves and jellies seem quite fine. There arealso chapters on Perfumery and Food for the sick. The meat sections include beef lamb veal pork venison rabbits shell fish and fish poultry and game but the roasting recipes go back to the time when roasting was done "before a clear fire". 1.5 JM HOQ 101/1.
