A New Edition corrected. 12mo a frontispiece and eight engraved plates of nine - lacking plate 6 pp lii 354 a little age-toning and very slight foxing the frontispiece is slightly offset on to the title page but overall remarkably clean and tight internally recently bound in a simple brown half calf and cloth very good. First published in 1805 it was a huge success and several editions followed; the book sold around half a million copies in Rundell's lifetime. The book was aimed at middle class housewives. In addition to dealing with food preparation it offers advice on medical remedies and how to set up a home brewery and includes a section entitled "Directions to Servants". The book contains an early recipe for tomato sauce - possibly the first - and the first recipe in print for Scotch eggs. Rundell also advises readers on being economical with their food and avoiding waste. Half-Leather. Very Good. John Murray Hardcover

The primary author Gervase Markham 1568-1637 was an English poet and writer. Although his best known work is The English Huswife London 1615 he was also a horse breeder credited with having brought the first Arabian horse to England. A scarce Pennsylvania edition of this popular work. In Good Condition: loss of leather along front joint for 3.5 cm. at tail of spine and in sections of both boards; a few page corner creases; minor foxing; otherwise clean and tight. Thomas J. RARE Despite the opening words of the title the whole book is devoted to an account of the business endeavours of Whiteley. Inspired by an early visit to Crystal Palace he was determined to create a shop where absolutely everything could be purchased and thus eventually was born London's first department store - "Whiteley's" of Bayswater. The book is a detailed account of the model farms created at Hanworth to provide jams potted meats pickles etc for the shop. It is an unsurpassed social and commercial record. Publisher's brown cloth with gilt-stamped spine title and decoration; blind-stamped decoration on both boards. Dark brown endpapers. Frontispiece is an elevation of the garden front of a stable of Fairman Rogers Philadelphia. First edition. The author Robert McClure was a veterinarian from Scotland who settled in Philadelphia and taught at the first veterinary institution in the United States the Veterinary College of Philadelphia. That institution received a charter from the Pennsylvania legislature in 1852 although its founders struggled for some years to establish a school which ceased to exist after 1866. In 1877 McClure was convicted of selling diplomas from the now defunct veterinary college for which he was fined $200 and imprisoned for nine months. In Very Good Condition: corners very lightly rubbed; lower corner of back board discolored; pages are clean and tight. Porter & Coates hardcover
