Inscribed on the front endpaper "Mary Anne Miller - the gift of the Marquess of Bath 1833". RARE. The work was produced for and given to various cottagers who worked on the estate at Longleat. After brewing and breadmaking there is instruction on the keeping of cows pigs rabbits and fowls; various recipes follow. It is rarely mentioned in the history of English cookery books. With 3pp publisher's catalogue at end and two small items of related ephemera loosely inserted. 'This volume meets a want long felt. Vegetables Fruits etc constitute the half of our daily food: the present work is upon the best possible preparation of this half. Cookery-books exist in abundance; but they relate almost exclusively to the preparation of dishes from animal food' Publisher's advertisement. Smith's delightful compilation was first published in 1866. There was a second issue in 1876 and a third in 1884 so this is probably the fourth edition. The last edition may be that of 1890. The Second American Edition added both an index and an appendix with general instructions for the use of aniline colors the latter contributed by Andreykovicq & Dunk. German text throughout. Photographs on request. Johann Rottenhöfer 1806-1872 was a well-known German chef of the 19th century and the author of an important cookbook. The later steward of the Bavarian kings Maximilian II. And Ludwig II. Was a representative of the upscale "courtly" kitchen. He was "head cook" at the Bavarian royal court in Munich which means according to the economic Encyclopedia of state city household and agriculture that he - in contrast to the "court cook" - only prepared food for the "master's table" so for the royal family and their guests. In 1858 he published his cookbook Rottenhöfer Instruction in the Fine Art of Cooking which was used with its 2345 recipes for decades after his death by other chefs. Braun Und Schneider Hardcover

Page 67 has a crease across the page. A number of the pages are dog-eared. Rear pastedown and endpaper has some stains along the edges. Traces of foxing on the text block and some of the pages.
