Legatura degli inizi del novecento in mezza tela (tela del dorso recentemente sostituita) con piatti foderato con carta marmorizzata coeva. Brossura editoriale applicata al piatto anteriore. Prima rara e ricercata edizione di questa celebre opera dedicata ai funghi mangerecci ed al modo di cucinarli, scritta dal noto farmacista di Varese Ligure, Clemente Rossi. Figura singolare, Rossi fu autore di diverse pubblicazioni, la maggior parte legate alle tradizioni dei rimedi popolari ma anche un noto scritto in tema dell’alimentazione negli asili infantili. L’opera qui presentata, arricchita da 23 belle tavole a piena pagine a colori con riproduzioni di funghi, descrive minuziosamente diversi funghi mangerecci dandone caratteristiche, periodi di maturazioni ed altri dati per riconoscerli. Ad ogni fungo seguono poi diverse ricette, molte tipiche del territorio dell’entroterra ligure, su come prepararlo sia con ricette popolari che con preparazioni molto ricercate. Ad esempio si legge nel capitolo “Varie maniere per ben cucinare l’Agarico Campestre” la ricetta per preparare questo fungo “Zimino o funghetto alla genovese”: “Pulite bene una data quantità di questi funghi, tagliate gambo e cappello in sottili fetterelle, lavateli e poneteli asciutti in cazzarola con due spicchi …” ecc. With numerous trade advertisements (many illustrated and most in red and green) at front and rear, and with a number of recipe cuttings loosely inserted. The Edwardian issues are among the most comprehensive in coverage and are very well indexed.
Hardcover without jacket in acceptable condition. Some wear to the boards with a few marks throughout. Spine ends and its edges have some wear and nicks. Leading corners are a little bumped. Fitted in a protective sleeve. Small tear to the upper edge of the front endpaper. The text block is detached from the spine and front hinge. The rear hinge is partially split along the pastedown. The binding itself is intact. Pencil mark on pages 213 and 214. Page 67 has a crease across the page. A number of the pages are dog-eared. Rear pastedown and endpaper has some stains along the edges. La brossura originale presenta il titolo impresso al piatto anteriore entro cornice xilografica. PRIMA RARA EDIZIONE. L'opera raccoglie le lettere (qui pubblicate per la prima volta) del grande medico ed archeologo pisano a Francesco Redi nelle quali l'autore escrive ciò che vide e fece durante il suo soggiorno a Tunisi. Pagni segue la tradizione della presenza di prestare la propria opera al servizio del Bay di Tunisi, tradizione ben ancora ben viva durante tutto l'ottocento come attesta l'opera di Bensasson, Boccara, Castelnuovo, Costa, Debbash, Lumbroso, Nunez Vais, per citarne solo alcuni. Pagni fu insigne antiquario, professore di filosofia e medicina nel patrio Ateneo Pisano e autore di un pregevole, tuttora inedito "Comento sopra i famosi Cenotafi pisani". Morì a soli 42 anni nel 1676 dopo aver prestato servizio in Africa. L'opera, qui stampata per la prima volta, riporta le memorie e le impressioni africane di Pagni concernenti la flora, la fauna e costumi della Tunisia. Pagni descrive i cinghiali, i falconi, le acquile, le cornacchie, e tanti altri volatili, i cavalli, i bufali, le cicogne, i pesci, gli insetti e numerosa altra fauna come le testuggini ma ha particolare attenzione anche per i costumi e le abitudini locali come gli sposalizi e i prodotti culinari.
