8vo. 208 pp. Unsophisticated contemporary boards. Early Viennese edition of this gardening manual first published in Berlin in 1808. The nurseryman Karl Paul Bouché (1747-1819) was born into a Huguenot family of gardeners resident in Berlin since 1685. In 1781 he took over his father's business. The greenhouses he built were among the largest of their time: he also used them as coffee houses that proved popular among high civil servants and indeed with the king himself. Bouché introduced the culture of flower bulbs to Berlin and cultivated a number of difficult plants; by introducing the hydrangea (hortensia) he opened up an important market to horticulture (cf. NDB II, 491). - Binding markedly rubbed; interior browned with occasional slight worming to gutter. An old ownership on the title-page has been obliterated. Cf. Dochnahl 23.

1st Edition. Original Wrappers. 8vo. 16 pages ; 23 cm. Gotthard Deutschs Rabbinic scholarly and rabbinic opinions on a wide variety of issues including one of the first rabbinic opinions (perhaps, the first ever published opinion) the use of Pyrex in Kosher Kitchens: not knowing what Pyrex is, I must be guided by the information that it is glass , as well as Burial of a Non-Jew in a Jewish Cemetery, the question of whether a congregation can sell its synagogue, the question of Divorce in the Case of an Insane Husband, and The Right to Change and Interpret the Law in Accordance with the Needs of the Age. Gotthard Deutsch (1859 1921) , also spelled Gottard Deutsch, was a scholar of Jewish history In 1891, at the invitation of Isaac Mayer Wise, Deutsch moved to the United States to accept the chair of Jewish history and philosophy at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. After eleven years of teaching there, he was appointed dean. In February 1903, after the death of Moses Mielziner, he was designated acting president of the college, a position he held until October of the same year One of the turning points in Deutsch's life came with the United States's entry into World War I. His lifelong love for Germany had led Deutsch to support Woodrow Wilson's neutrality while aligning himself with the People's Council of America for Democracy and Peace. In the tide of anti-German hysteria, Deutsch found himself alone and ostracized. He spoke out singularly, sometimes bitterly, against his adopted country's wartime role. On 5 October 1917, federal agents and local detectives raided the council's headquarters. (Wikipedia, 2017) OCLC lists just 2 copies worldwide (HUC, NLI) , and none on the East Coast. Damp stains/Discoloration to front Wrapper. Some wear throughout. Very good- condition. Rare. (AMR-52-25)
