Three plates: Frontispiece confectioner's laboratory and 2 plates illustrating kitchen utensils and motifs/decorations. The author the widow of a renowned pastry chef opened her shop in Berlin at the end of the 18th century and was able to establish herself as a refined pastry chef later moving her establishment to Paris. The book contains recipes and advice on how to make jams marmalades and various preserves. Instructions on distillation and the composition of liqueurs and creams. Also includes how to prepare chocolate coffee tea syrups lemonade punch ice cream and sorbets. With marbled boards end papers and edges this French recipe book has some rubbing and wear to the edges with a 1 cm. loss to the tail of the spine. First published in 1817 this extensive guide for the domestic cook took the UK and US by storm making Kitchiner a household name and an inspiration for many later cookbook authors including Mrs. Beeton who lifted a number of her recipes directly from his book. 1808UDG-53[FORTIA DE PILES - DE SAINT-CHARLES (Guys)] MOUCHERON (Claude Athanase). Omniana, ou extrait des archives de la société universelle des Gobe-Mouches, dédié à S. S. le Président, fondateur et Général en chef. Paris, chez Maradan, Petit, Delajonchere, 1808. In-12, édition originale de ce curieux ouvrage sur la "société des gobe-mouches", rédigé sous le pseudonyme de Claude Athanase Moucheron. Uniquement composée de gourmets, on y retrouve notamment Grimod de la Reynière en tant que secrétaire, Jourgniac-Saint-Méard comme Président et Louis-Sébastien Mercier comme Garde des Sceaux. Illustré du fameux frontispice gravé par Louis-François Mariage, encadré de quatre mouches, figurant un repas de huit convives fourmillant de détails dans le "Quartier général", parmi lesquels on peut reconnaitre Grimod de La Reynière ou encore un curieux convive tenant une Lune à la main, possible évocation de Pierre de Lune, auteur d'un des plus fameux livres de cuisine du XVIIème siècle. Important ouvrage sur l'histoire de la gastronomie et des sociétés "badines bacchiques littéraires et chantantes" (Arthur Dinaux) dans lesquelles les participants, bibliophiles et gastronomes, se réunissent pour célébrer les plaisirs de la table, de l'humour et de la joie de vivre en se livrant à diverses facéties et canulars. On y retrouve 181 anecdotes numérotées, parfois grivoises, datant de la fin du XVIIIème au début du XIXème siècle. Comme le résumait leurs statuts : "Permis, après avoir alimenté d'une manière satisfaisante l'appétit du corps, de s'occuper de l'esprit, s'il y a lieu, mais à charge, pour son introducteur, de payer une amende (qui sera fixée), s'il osait parler de philosophie, de politique, d'affaires du temps ou de raison". Reliure demi-cuir rouge postérieure, dos lisse à faux-nerfs dorés. Exemplaire bien complet du rare frontispice, de l'avertissement de l'éditeur, l'errata et l'êpitre dédicatoire mais ne comprenant pas les 10 pages de préface "diplôme et preuves de la qualité de « gobemouche » attribuée à C.-A. A little marginal browning and soiling consistent with use upper corners bumped lacks decorative paper over lower wrapper. This manuscript is a copy of Kojitsu kenpō 古實獻法 a work concerned with menu composition and the presentation of food for celebratory occasions tied to seasonal festivals including the New Year in January and the Girls’ Festival in March. The text is organised into seven sections comprising a total of one hundred items.<br><br>This copy was most likely produced in the late Edo period. A note on the final page states that the contents are secret and should not be transmitted to outsiders suggesting its use within a restricted or specialist context. <br><br>Several hand-drawn illustrations are included with the text showing in detail the arrangement and presentation of dishes and serving ware appropriate to these ceremonial occasions. . unknown

Parker Scammon is an officer with the United Army Corps of Topographic Engineers. Parker would later command the 23rd Ohio Regiment during the Civil War. <br /> <br />Good Friday Morn. 1846 <br /> <br />My Dearest brother <br /> <br />Parker fully intended to cover this envelope to you but as he was about doing it the Quartermaster must needs send for him to come to the Library for some important briefings: and so he begs me to write for him and apologize to the best of my ability for the non-appearance of your beer. You must have thought him very neglectful and tho' it is rather an awkward task I will tell you the whole truth. If you will have patience to wait till the end of this month it shall then be forthcoming. He expected to order it on the 1st but our cook took it into his head to go back to the city to live and as we had at his own request kept back the quarter part of his wages for 18 months you must know our last month's pay went with a rush and as we are so involved on every side we wont borrow and therefore all parties ourselves included must wait till after another visit from the Paymaster for our good beer. I have thus most frankly stated to you the case and I hope you will excuse it. We remember that we are still considerably in your debt so that it is with great pleasure that P. will attend to your order just so soon as circumstances will permit. I think the value of the empty half barrels returned is $1.50 each and they quite well have them as money.
