The handwritten illustrated veggies holding guns note suggests some food shortages due to the war and "Vegetable are besieging us this time". The note also explains prices have gone up and the need to add cabbage to the salad. Dinner featured a Smörgasbord for $1.10 Braised Short Ribs of Beef for .80 c. and Veal a la Maryland for .85c. Desserts are written in by hand: Prune-filled Layer Cake Chocolate Cream Pie Apple Pie Snow Pudding with egg sauce and Ice Cream. Covers lightly toned. <br /> books

"HECTOR" was a set of four sister ships built for Alfred Holt and Company of Liverpool - part of the Blue Funnel Line. Sister ships were Sarpedon Patroclus and Antenor - all named after characters in Homer's Iliad. This shaped menu featured a combination of both French British and American dishes. Dinner featured Chowder Baked Mackerel with Tomato Sauce Fried Eels - Jewish style Saratoga Chips Clam Fritters Soft Shell Crabs Quahogs Indian Pudding Ice Cream Watermelon & Peaches and Ponham Spring Water. Also noted the 1891 Executive Committee and the Providence Warren & Bristol Train schedules. <br /> <br />A private club with a membership of 200 shareholders opened in 1867 as a place for gentlemen to network over shore dinners of lobster steamed clams corn and potatoes. The club grounds included a ball field miniature clock and obstacle golf courses bowling alleys and it's own wharf. This area in Providence known as "Riverside" hosted the Crescent Park Amusement Park known as the "Coney Island of the East". Along the Providence River west of the club is the Ponham Lighthouse which is still standing today. The club closed in 1954 and the property was redeveloped for condominiums in the 1980's. The menu commences with a Martini Cocktail followed by Clam Broth Clam Chowder Baked Clams Clam Cakes Baked Lobster Broiled Mackerel - along with Rhode Island Johnny Cakes Champagne Beer Cigars & Cigarettes. Speakers include Rhode Island politicians John J. Fitzgerald 1871-1926 State representative & Democratic Mayor Mayor Joseph H. Gainer Artist Hezekiah Anthony Dyer Commissioner Benjamin P. Moultan and Henry A. Carpenter. <br /><br />The "Providence Friars" seems to be a bit of a leg-pull as they all are known entertainers. We know "Abbott" George M. Cohan was no other than the famous vaudeville song-and-dance man playwright director producer comic actor and popular songwriter George M. Cohan. Born in Providence Rhode Island this may have been a welcome homecoming for Cohan. Light toning to cards. <br /> books
19474101947. Large French Menu dated May 25 1947. 75 x 54 cm 108 cm. open This menu was made for a First Communion painted on front and back covers as well as the interior. The menu was signed by family and friends that were present at the event. The front cover depicts a religious figure on a train along with a large religious figure with many bottles of wine. Roughly translates: "Jeannot Leclerc/First Solemn Communion/Menu/In time the Lord said: "Woe to St. Lo"/and we venerate this holy day our great Patrons/St.Estephe/St. Emilion/Ste. Croix du Mont/Amen.the bottle!" Depicted on the first interior page is an illustration of a scroll and a large man smoking a cigar. Translates: "It is a treat to see my first's communion/If you are really well happy and cheerful/Praise the stove/Thank the master of the house/and in memory of this memorable precious day/Leave me a sly autograph/ So you are able to write." Under this illustration and writing is the signatures of over 10 people with a couple of longer notes. On the facing page many cheeky illustrations depicting the Menu which is also illustrated on this page. Translates: "First as a prelude/a light breakfast enough to maintain an outfit for vespers/ Les hors d'oeuvres - traditional/Hen/ The Rice/Salad of our gardens/Whipped cream as a large Steeple/Mocha/Now that the ceremonies are completed it is worth giving serious attention/This famous dinner we will enjoy/Winter Soup/The Salmon Canapé Louis XIII epic/The Lamb/Chicken/the Mushrooms of the dead/The other salad/The assorted cheeses-delights the boss/The Pies-super comfort/The Fruits-First Headlines/The bomb/To properly finish this meal/Champagne/Contraband Coffee/liqueurs/And all these good things pleasantly watered by/Bergerac St. Estephe Cote d'Or 1942 Chateauneuf du Pape/Bon Appetit!!"/ Depicted on the back cover is a man with a finished meal and a easel. A part of New York restaurant history almost entirely forgotten Chin Lee restaurant was one of the theater districts nightclub-restuaurants known for its mass quantities of cheap chop suey liquor dim lights and dance music. The menus feature "Party Cocktails" and both Chinese style "Chop Sooy" Chow Mein Chinese specialty dishes and American style food - part diner part nightclub. Both menus are stamped on the rear: "Our prices are ceiling prices according to OPA regulations based on our highest prices April 4- 10 1943. - Menus for that period at our office." "Eat Drink and be Merry" edition has inscription on rear: "A tip to the waiters - Kindly don't ask for tips it's just not being done. You'll find you will get more otherwise ask the union."
