"Ami Carlo Rim, Il y a du vitriol de haute qualité dans vos tracés, dans vos figures. Une vue profonde des âmes, la découverte rapide des grands angles, des axes essentiels qui font gigoter le pantin. Le mistral brûle les os de vos bonhommes, le mistral révélateur qui jette un froid dans les cascades. Bravo ! C'est de la rude et bonne ouvrage. Et bien (mot illisible) du bel envoi. Votre tout attentif et avec grande estime. Antoine Bourdelle." Trace de pliure inhérente à la mise sous pli. Carlo Rim fut un écrivain provençal, auteur notamment de "Ma belle Marseille", un caricaturiste, un cinéaste : "Justin de Marseille", "L'armoire volante", "La maison Bonnadieu", et fut notamment l'ami de Fernandel, de Raimu et Marcel Pagnol mais aussi de Max Jacob et André Salmon qu'il rencontra à Sanary. - Paris 1930, 19x32,5cm, une feuille. - Superbe affiche-carte d'invitation à l'édition 1930 du Bal des Quat'Z'Arts, portant toujours son talon en partie inférieure. Très belle illustration en couleurs d'Yves Brayer et O. Rabaud représentant un menaçant chevalier aragonais se faisant charmer par une danseuse orientale. Le thème du fameux bal des étudiants des Beaux-Arts, qui eut lieu le 21 juin à la porte de Versailles, fut la prise de Grenade par les chevaliers aragonais - sur l'invitation, on peut lire le texte suivant : "Le sultan Abou-Abdillah se fait vider de Grenade par les bandes d'Aragon, ainsi que la chose s'est très véridiquement passée en 1492. Viens voir ça ma jolie, et accourt avec nous vers l'Alhambra, pour y boire le vin d'Espagne et danser la danse de Mograbines, au son des violes." Est également imprimée cette prudente décharge de responsabilité des organisateurs craignant quelques inévitables débordements et manifestations joyeuses : "le comité dégage sa responsabilité des poursuites que pourrait entraîner l'exhibition du nu sur la voie publique." Légères traces d'usure en bordure supérieure. Le premier bal des Quat'z'Arts, grande fête organisée par les étudiants de l'École nationale des beaux-arts de Paris, se déroula le 23 avril 1892. Cette tradition perdura jusqu'en 1966. « Depuis que nous allons au bal des Quat' z' Arts, nous avons vu déjà plusieurs fois Babylone travestie à la mode Quat' z' Arts, rien ne change et le bal des Quat' z' Arts demeure, ne ressemblant à rien d'autre. Il a précédé les ballets russes et les revues de music-hall à grand spectacle, il ne leur a rien emprunté par la suite, fidèle à ses propres traditions. Cette fête dans un décor de palais reconstitué « à la blague », la somptuosité remplacée par l'ingéniosité, tout cela ne se retrouve que là. L'esprit quat' z' art existe et se perpétue, il s'est manifesté une fois de plus dans la lumière, dans le charivari des cuivres et des tambours, dans les danses forcenées, les bousculades, le tumulte d'une foule maintenue par la traditionnelle garde noire ». With two fore-edge paintings by Don Noble: Westminster Hall & Hampton Court. Very finely painted – this book seems like it was a book that Noble liked to paint on as his detail is sharper on this set. The paintings are not signed but Noble's style and choice of colors is clearly recognizable. In addition there is a short penciled note 2 markings in his hand: / HANDWRITING OF DON NOBLE: Not clearly written: ffu or perhaps DHo or if one's imagination is working DNo is stylistically possible representing a moniker or artist's signature. Whatever he wrote it is his handwriting / 2 vB i.e. 2 vols. But looks like a "B". / William Roscoe was "a champion of freedom for all a poet writer scholar patron of the Arts lawyer banker bibliophile and botanist." – John Moores University Liverpool. / Sold by Harrington's with their cost-marks end-paper annotations. Probably commissioned by or represented by that firm just after it was painted. Don Noble either sold the set to Harrington's or they commissioned him to paint on this set which is what I would guess is correct. The period of execution being approximately 1980s-1990s. By evidence of Harrington's the father not the 2 sons buying pattern at auction I note that the firm purchased auctioned lots of leather-bound books and commissioned or assigned various books for making a new fore-edge painting. A handsome Book of Common Prayer in full black gilt calf with an early foredge painting of St. Albans Abbey and recording the births and deaths of an English family from 1787 to 1830. The end paper has a note in an early hand stating the foredge is of "St. Albans Abbey" with the surrounding district. The original owners name has been crossed out but the last pages of the book include record the births and deaths of the Osmond Family of Hungerford. <br /> <br /> 8vo 568pp. Printed in a large and attractive type on laid paper marbled endpapers. A little light soiling thumbing on the first few pages on the lower right corner but the whole in very clean without foxing. Period full black calf gilt tooled binding marbled end papers gilt inner and outer dentelles all edges gilt. Housed in a later cloth slip case. Spine a touch dry the binding is tight yet opens comfortably. <br /> <br /> ESTC T166750 - No pagination provided ; 8° the final leaf = Ll4. 8vo 21 cm 568p. Solid text block rubbed corners and edges. Previous ownership inscriptions to front endpapers. Fore-edge painting depicts a mountain landscape with a small sound in the foreground. R A R E ! A lovely painting of a Mandarin. the verso of this painting has a small sticker at lower left with "Made in China" prin- ed on it. The painting was done with a skilled and steady hand with attention to detail using a very fine brush typical of the time. The Mandarin wears a blue silk gown with delicate gold wave pattern embroidered on it. On the chest is a black silk embroidery with a white crane and the rank badge typical furry "cravat" or neck decoration. He also wears the typical Imperial Mandarin's hat. In order to exalt ancestors it was common to execute such paintings posthumously to elevate relatives of or to offic- ialdom.
