1940206211Paris: L'usage de la Parole 1940. First Edition. Spine split; corners bumped; some general soil one very small tear at the top but otherwise without significant wear. 4to 6 unpag. leaves loosely inserted in stiff wrappers. Thomson first set Hugnet's poems to music in 1927. They were his first French songs. Here the songs are printed for the first time in lithographic facsimile of Thomson's handwriting on S.A.V. Vélin scored for voice and piano. The lithographic front wrapper is by Pablo Picasso. As near as we can ascertain a small number of copies were produced to send as gifts to friends and to subscribers to Hugnet's short-lived periodical L'usage de la parole. It seems likely that the songs were intended to be included in a fourth number of the magazine number 3 in April 1940 announced Thomson as a contributor to the next number but the magazine ceased publication before a fourth number could be completed when German armed forces marched into France in May. It is unclear how many copies might have been produced and actually sent to subscribers. The small number of institutional holdings suggests that the wartime conditions must have curtailed the effort. There was also a limited edition said to be only 40 copies signed by Hugnet and Thomson but not Picasso and specially bound. In April of 1940 Thomson wrote to Maurice Grosser: "My Picasso cover for La Valse Grégorienne is quite handsome. It is just the words of the title as I gave them to him and a couple of curlycues added no picture or anything which is exactly what I wanted also the signature large and impressive." Later in his autobiography Thomson confessed that had feared that Picasso's artistic power might overwhelm his own and so he asked him specifically to limit his cover to the text provided. Thomson's musical 'portrait' of Picasso "Bugles & Birds" was composed in April 1940 as a gesture of thanks for this work. Very scarce and fragile. Not recorded in Bloch's Catalogue Raisonée. L'usage de la Parole unknown

1948822901948. Fine. s. d. vers 1948 17.30 x 21.30 cm une feuille n.d. around 1948 Photograph: 17.3 x 21.3cm; Leaf: 18 x 24cm one leaf. Rare original photograph of Pablo Picasso turning towards one of his ceramic creations taken by Michel Sima. Contemporary silver print. Pencil inscription on the back. Very light scratch on the surface not affecting the image. In September 1946 Pablo Picasso set up his workshop in the attic of the Château Grimaldi in Antibes in a former guards room to which the curator Romuald Dor de la Souchère gave him the keys so that he could work there as he pleased. It is the artist Michel Sima sculptor and photographer who introduced the two men. Arriving from his native Poland in 1929 Sima whose real name was Michel Smajewki met Picasso in Paris where he frequented the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and was the pupil of Zadkine. From mid-September to mid-November 1946 in Antibes then from 1947-48 and until the beginning of the 50's in Vallauris Sima regularly photographed Picasso who willingly posed for the camera - alone or with his companion Françoise Gilot in front of completed works or those in progress staring at the lens or on the contrary focusing on his work Anne de Staël L'Atelier des combles 2009. Sublime chiaroscuro shot of the master contemplating his work. Provenance: Paul Destribats collection. unknown

212
With the Picasso plate in two colours: a fine group with Dadaist flavour related to the first experimental "ball" of the Union of Russian Artists in Paris which included as member Mikhail Larionov Natalia Goncharova and Ilia Zdanevich Iliazd among others.
The printed programme is a typographical and artistic masterpiece with participations of Juan Gris Derain Picasso and Goncharova incorporating poems by French and Russian artists such as Tristan Tzara. The typography was perhaps unsurprisingly conceived by Iliazd who also played a major role in the original idea of such 'balls' gathering an international and Parisian avant-garde.
The programme of the event was eclectic featuring a Russian piece a Japanese 'village party' by Foujita and a popular song on the Venice festival many with choreography and costumes by Larionov and Goncharova.
Includes the large striking ticket designed by Larionov often found on its own.

Description
Large 4to 33 x 26 cm and 2 sheets 50 x 13 and 22 x 27.7 cm.
