Double number edition of the Verve art revue showcasing only the works of Pablo Picasso.Verve the modernist Parisian art magazine at the forefront of the radical creative aesthetic of its time was first published in 1937 with famous cover artwork by Henri Matisse. Subsequently it was responsible for showcasing the most distinguished characters of the Parisian art scene of the 20th century including textual contributions by prominent transgressive authors such as James Joyce. This edition features accompanying words by Rebecca West and prolific Surrealist writer and anthropologist Michel Leiris.Its founder Teriade pseudonym of the Greek Stratis Eleftheriades made the statement ""Verve was born in December 1937. In times of agony such things happen when there are big crises when we are really desperate and we do have nothing to lose or rather we are afraid that everything will be lost while waiting for disaster . Then at this precise moment everyone is able to act even to act with passion"".The year of this publication 1954 marked the death of Picasso's artistic rival but great friend Henri Matisse and his passing considerably affected Picasso who in some way relied on their competition as a catalyst. Complete collection of Surrealist poems published under the Nazi Occupation Non vouloir 1940 ; Pablo Picasso - Marcel Duchamp - Au dépens des mots 1941 19.4 x 29.6 cm Quatre feuillets Rare complete set of four pamphlets with poems by Georges Hugnet in first edition published during the Occupation illustrated by Picasso Joan Miro and Valentine Hugo. The first titled ""Non-vouloir"" was limited to only 26 copies; our copy is one of the 20 copies on vergé antique de Montval following 6 copies on japon. The three others on ordinary paper from a limited edition of 200 copies. ""Non-vouloir"" was the first resistance poem published openly and signed by its author without being subjected to censorship. Composed between March and June 1940 Hugnet's poem stands as a poetic manifesto of refusal against defeat and occupation echoing General De Gaulle's famous radio speach of June 18. Hugnet became an early member of the resistance and joined the group ""La Main à plume"" which printed numerous clandestine tracts. He used his bookbinding workshop to forge false documents and under the pseudonym ""Malo le Bleu"" contributed notably to ""L'honneur des poètes"" a collection of resistance poetry published clandestinely in 1943 by the famous Editions de Minuit. Non vouloir 1940. Printed in red ink. Illustrated with an original frontispiece by Joan Miro. The leaf has been trimmed to form an eight-page pamphlet a barely perceptible shadow left by a paper clip. Pablo Picasso 1941. Illustrated with 6 original zincographs by Pablo Picasso framing a poem by Georges Hugnet from January 1940. Fine copy without crease marks. Marcel Duchamp 1941. Printed in blue ink. Rare copy before the printing of the stencil by Marcel Duchamp mounted as frontispiece representing the mythical moustache he put on the Mona Lisa in 1919. Crease marks leaf cut along the fold at the top of the title page without loss of paper or text. Au dépens des mots 1941. Printed in gold ink illustrated with an original frontispiece by Valentine Hugo. A few very slight traces of sunning. Fine copy without crease marks. unknown

Splendid portrait of Pablo Picasso taken by Michel Sima in Picasso's Madoura workshop in Vallauris with his ceramics and a plaster model of his Centaure 1948. Contemporary silver print. Pencil inscription on the back. Thanks to the author of this superb portrait Picasso began his impressive ceramic production at the Madoura workshop in the small town of Vallauris known for its pottery tradition. Sima photographed with vigour the master and his many creations exhibited on the bare walls of his workshop bathed with Mediterranean light. Picasso produced 2000 unique pieces between 1947 and 1948 and revolutionised the forms and techniques of this medium to which he added fragments of pigments saggar broken bricks to the bellies of his ceramics in the form of owls doves fauna invisible women. ""Au mois de septembre 1946 Pablo Picasso installe son atelier dans les combles du château Grimaldi d'Antibes dans une ancienne ""salle des gardes"" dont le conservateur Romuald Dor de la Souchère lui a confié les clés pour qu'il y travaille à sa guise. C'est l'artiste Michel Sima sculpteur et photographe qui a fait se rencontrer les deux hommes. Arrivé de sa Pologne natale en 1929 Sima de son vrai nom Michel Smajewski avait fait la connaissance de Picasso à Paris où il avait fréquenté l'Académie de la Grande Chaumière et été l'élève de Zadkine.
