This 1947 publication is the finest photographic documentary of Jewish life in Eastern Europe during the 1920's and 30's. It has never been superseded. In addition to choosing from some thousands of postcards and family photographs submitted by readers of the Yiddish "Daily Forward" the editors were able to reproduce images previously published in the Forward's Rotogravure section by the photographers Alter Kacyzna and M. Kipnis. Additionally the now famous images of Roman Vishniak were first presented to the public in this work. Profusely illustrated with b/w reproductions of photographs. In two parts: 1 Jewish Cities. 2 Jewish People. Text in Yiddish and English. One of the most powerful photographic works on Eastern European Jewry ever published. Binding with some light sunning light staining extending slightly to the back cover and a sticker residue to the spine. A few tiny stains to the front cover. Book block tight with interior clean. Binding in very good interior in near fine condition overall. Protected in modern mylar. "In presenting this book to our readers we intend to give them the picture of the Jewish world in Eastern Europe as it existed during the 1920's and 1930's previous to the Second World War. This world does not exist any longer. It is a vanished world the world of East European Jewry that world in which for centuries the greatest concentration of Jewish people in history lived and worked. On the eve of the Second World War over seven million Jews resided in that part of Eastern Europe which was swept by Hitler's divisions in the years 1939-45. If we also include sections of Southern and Western Europe the Balkans Italy France Belgium Holland and Scandinavia the Jewish population under Nazi rule may be estimated at approximately 7.8 million persons. More than 9400000 Jews lived in the whole of Europe in 1939. Only about 3700000 are left now including the "Displaced Persons" in the UNRRA camps and those repatriated from Soviet Russia and Poland. Five million of these were exterminated in the death camps and the ghettos. About seven hundred thousand perished from starvation deportation epidemics and as a result of military operations. The East European period of Jewish history ended in the greatest catastrophe known to mankind."

Raphael Abramovitch was a 20th century Russian Jewish political activist. As a Marxist he was part of the Jewish Bund. He took part in the Russian Revolution on the side of the Mensheviks. After the Bolshevik victory he fled to Germany France and eventually to the United States. Abramovitch was a vocal opponent of both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Forward Association hardcover

19125917Havana 1912. Good plus. 196pp. Original printed front wrapper bound into 20th-century faux leather paper boards spine and front board gilt lettered. Contemporary ownership inscription and bookseller's ink stamp on title page. Lower corners of initial and final leaves repaired with tissue. Even tanning occasional foxing heavier to initial leaves. A scarce contemporary account of what the authors term the "Guerra de Razas" also known as the 1912 Cuban War an uprising by parts of the island's Afro-Cuban population demanding equal rights which was brutally extinguished by government forces. The conflict had its roots in racial tensions between Cuba's Hispanic and Black populations after the reestablishment of self-government in 1909. Race-based political parties such as the Partido Independiente de Color had been established in the 1900s to fight for the civil rights of Black Cubans but these groups were outlawed by the predominantly Hispanic government in 1910. The PIC continued to operate however and its leaders Evaristo Esteñoz and Pedro Ivonet agitated for a rebellion that would force the government to reverse the law. When the uprising finally occurred in the eastern provinces of Cuba on May 20 1912 it was met with extreme force with contemporary accounts and eyewitnesses numbering the executed and massacred at anywhere between 2000 and 6000 people including Esteñoz and Ivonet. The authors of the present work present their account from a pro-government perspective but nevertheless make some attempt toward social history and analysis of the causes of conflict. The whole is photographically illustrated with numerous portraits of significant military figures. OCLC locates a small handful of copies in U.S. institutions. unknown

A touching scene after Morland: 'a master of genre and animal painting an artist worthy to be placed in the same rank as the best of those Dutch masters whom he studied as a boy' DNB

This print is a wonderful example of the manner in which Morland perfectly conveys the hardships and beauties of country life his depiction of a poor country family battling the hardships of winter shows the bitter side of the pastoral life with grace and sympathy. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time creating during his industrious career some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. Morland was a prodigious painter producing more than 4000 paintings during the entirety of his career and sometimes painting two or three works in a day. His beautiful idealistic scenes were a favorite source of inspiration for contemporary engravers and as many as 250 separate engravings were done of his paintings during his lifetime. One such engraver was John Raphael Smith who throughout his career translated many of Morland's paintings to print. Smith was a highly influential figure in the late eighteenth-century British art world he quickly became an impresario of the print-publishing trade producing nearly 400 prints during his lifetime 130 of which were of his own design. This beautiful print refelects both the talents of the engraver and the genius of the artist in its sentiment and execution it demonstrates the best of English genre. Matthew William Peters by one of the finest eighteenth century engravers.

This charming print is engraved after a painting by Rev. Matthew William Peters and is a fascinating example of this period in British printmaking. Matthew Peters was trained in London under the portraitist Thomas Hudson. He quickly became a prominent member of the Society of Artists exhibiting portraits in oil and pastel and attracting a number of prominent aristocratic patrons including the Duke of Manchester the Marquess of Granby and Lord Grosvenor for whom he painted some of his most controversial pictures. Urged by his patrons Peters painted a series of quasi-erotic character studies of courtesans which at that time were quite unusual in Britain. These controversial pictures were eagerly reproduced by industrious printmaker/publishers such as Smith and caused a flurry of curious customers to hurry to London print-shops. Following his ordination in 1781 Peters quickly denounced his early erotic pictures as immoral. Upon being appointed Honorary Chaplain to the Royal Academy Peters expressed a profound regret "that he ever devoted his talents to such subjects". With this in mind this picture becomes extremely interesting. In this work Peters continues to observe and appreciate charming subjects in fancy costumes but eliminates the erotic overtones present in his earlier works. Instead he has chosen to depict an age-old moral subject fortune-telling an institution in western art since the Renaissance. This print which is expertly engraved by one of the finest eighteenth century printmakers is a fascinating view into a turbulent period in Peters' life when he struggled to produce images that would appeal to his viewers while remaining true to his moral beliefs.

D'Oench Copper into Gold: Prints by John Raphael Smith 1751-1812 p. 224 No. 274; Smith Catalogue No. 135 & 136; Ackermann 1802 p. 9 described as companion prints; Chaloner Smith British Mezzotinto Portraits Ward 97 Smith 186; Frankau An 18th Century Artist and Engraver: John Raphael Smith 146.
