1795147391795. Engraving. Printed on laid paper. Collector mark bearing the initials E.O printed in blue ink on verso of sheet. Some rippling in the middle of image. Image size: 22 x 15 1/16 inches. An exceedingly rare self/family portrait by Raphael Morghen after a painting by Angelica Kauffman.<br/> <br/>Though the whereabouts of the original painting is not known this is clearly a self-portrait of Angelica Kauffman seated with what appear to be two grown children and a son-in-law. She holds what is perhaps a portrait of her second husband Francesco Zucchi who died in 1795. Her children would have to have been from her unhappy first marriage. There is no title but rather a text in French about how virtue is instilled in children. This impressive portrait was painted by the celebrated artist Angelica Kauffman and engraved by the renowned Italian printmaker Raphael Morghen. Kauffman was a child prodigy who executed her first commissioned work before the age of thirteen. As a child she traveled through Austria and Italy with her father the painter Joseph Kauffman. She assisted him by painting the backgrounds of his works but she quickly received her own commissions and established a reputation for herself as an accomplished painter. In 1766 she traveled to London where she painted portraits and decorative paintings. She was a close friend of Reynolds and was one of the first female members of the British Royal Academy. Goethe called her "the most accomplished woman in Europe". Raphael Morghen received his first artistic training from his father the accomplished engraver Filippo Morghen. Like Kauffman Morghen was also a child prodigy publishing his first engraving at the age of twelve. By the age of twenty he had established himself as one of the premiere engravers in Europe allowing him to garner countless commissions. He worked in Naples Rome and Florence and produced over two hundred and fifty prints during his prolific career.<br/> <br/>Benezit Dictionnaire des Peintres Sculpteurs Dessinateurs et Graveurs. unknown books

1912135051912. inscribed by Sabatini A History and Some Criticisms. With a Coloured Frontispiece and Sixteen Other Illustrations in Half-tone. London: Stanley Paul & Co. n.d.1912. 32 pp ads undated but with this title listed second in the list of new announcements and with 1910 and 1911 cited elsewhere. Original black cloth lettered in gilt with dust jacket. First Edition of this very early historical work by Sabatini about a decade before he hit it big with "swashbuckling" tales such as SCARAMOUCHE and CAPTAIN BLOOD. Born of an Italian father and an English mother and educated in Portugal and Switzerland Sabatini 1875-1950 was fluent in five languages by the time he was eighteen; he would soon have a position in the Intelligence Department of the War Office during the Great War. The Sabatini website cites a 48-page ad catalogue but we think it is quite possible that this catalogue may precede: the only dates appearing in this catalogue are 1910 and 1911 and the inscription below is dated January 1912 the month of publication. This is a near-fine copy the only real flaw being some small holes in the cloth at the joints one fore-corner also shows some wear; included is the 1912 dust jacket red printed in black in good-to-very good condition a large chip at the bottom of the front panel other minor edge-wear but nothing affecting print spine slightly faded. THIS IS AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY with the author's ink inscription on the title verso "To Herbert Jarman from Rafael Sabatini London 17 Jany 1912". Jarman was an actor and occasional assistant producer on the London stage -- for example not long before this inscription Jarman had starred as Louis XIII in the 1911 stage production of "Bardelys the Magnificent" adapted by Sabatini and Henry Hamilton from Sabatini's 1906 novel of the same title our thanks to Sabatini biographer Ruth Heredia for this information. This early Sabatini title is scarce; in dust jacket it is very scarce; and inscribed it is extremely scarce. unknown books
185611298London: Sherwood and Company; James Cornish Booksellers 1856. Fourth Edition. Full Calf. Very Good. Fourth Edition. Full Calf. "This essay is intended as a foundation for belief in revealed religion in connection with the theory of celestial influences or astrology." Richard James Morrison 15 June 1795 - 5 April 1874 was an English astrologer commonly known by his pen name Zadkiel and best known for the series known as Zadkiel's Almanac. Morrison in 1831 issued The Herald of Astrology subsequently known as Zadkiel's Almanac. In this annual pamphlet he published predictions of the chief events of the coming year. Morrison wrote with the signature Zadkiel Tao-Sze. Morrison wrote such articles as The New Principia or true system of astronomy in which the Earth is proved to be the stationary centre of the Solar System 1868 which made him a charlatan in the eyes of scientists. In 1863 he won a libel suite against Admiral Sir Edward Belcher who wrote in the Daily Telegraph that Morrison was "the crystal globe seer who gulled many of our nobility about the year 1852." He was awarded twenty shillings one pound damages but was deprived of his costs. The Athenaeum 16 May 1874 p. 666 noted that Morrison was "the restorer and Grand Master in this country of Tao-Sze a secret society intended to be of immense power and to outshine the Free-masons but which most probably by his death is reduced to two members and inanition". Robert Cross Smith 1795-1832 was an English astrologer writing under the pseudonym of "Raphael" Starting on upper and rear joints cracking rubbing to extremities repair to folding color plate otherwise tight bright and unmarred. Full blind stamped red calf with worn gilt decorative vignette. Red titling on tp. and charts. 1947190394New York: Forward Association 1947. First edition first printing of perhaps the finest photographic documentary record of Jewish life in Eastern Europe in the decades leading to the Holocaust a conscious effort to preserve a record of the communities destroyed by Nazism. The editor used photographs from the Yiddish newspaper Daily Forward alongside photographs selected from the thousands of submissions readers sent in from their own family photographs and albums. The text is in English and Yiddish throughout. "In presenting this book to our readers we intend to give them the picture of the Jewish world in Eastern Europe as it existed during the 1920's and 1930's previous to the Second World War. This world does not exist any longer. It is a vanished world the world of East European Jewry that world in which for centuries the greatest concentration of Jewish people in history lived and worked. On the eve of the Second World War over seven million Jews resided in that part of Eastern Europe which was swept by Hitler's divisions in the years 1939-45. The East European period of Jewish history ended in the greatest catastrophe known to mankind" introduction. Oblong quarto. Original red cloth front cover lettered in gilt with pictorial onlay. 189974817Paris: Imprimerie Champenoispour CH. MassonH. Piazza 1899. Fine. Imprimerie Champenois pour CH. Masson H. Piazza Paris Février 1899 23.50 x 34.50 cm une feuille Rare original lithograph executed by Raphaël Collin for L'Estampe Moderne series number 22 published in February 1899. One of 50 deluxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins artist's signature in the plate publisher's dry stamp representing a child's profile in the lower margin mounted on a sheet of laid paper with the numbered stamp of the deluxe printing on the verso some foxing. Lithograph inspired by the poem Partenza by Francis Vièlé-Griffin. Magnificent French monthly publication edited between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards were created specifically by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism Art Nouveau Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and Belle Époque. Each issue of four prints was published in 2000 copies sold for 3.50F and 100 on Japan paper offered at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a confidential deluxe printing: 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This print of handsome format is superbly printed on one of the most prestigious papers: China paper. ""Despite all its qualities China paper too inconsistent owes its reputation not to its own beauty but to its particular affinities with printing ink. Its texture smooth and soft at once is more apt than any other to receive a beautiful printing. This property makes China paper sought after for printing engravings."" Anatole France. The interest of French collectors in artistic posters grew in the early 1890s. Octave Uzanne to qualify this fever invented the term ""affichomanie"". The poster originally popular and plastered on the streets of the capital then became an art object and its ephemeral support became precious and destined for preservation. Piazza decided to remove the poster from its advertising vocation and elevate it to the rank of a complete work of art on the same level as the illustrated luxury book. He thus composed a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most prominent European artists of the moment: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. Handsome copy.
