5447France: S.P. S.D. Reprint. A limited edition 26/250 His 1 May 1915 illustration in Fantasio depicts a poignant wartime theme: "Living beautiful and dying by releasing a beautiful soul" featuring motifs of war casualties from the 1914-1918 conflict. This is not a page from the magazine it was printed as a poster and is printed later and numbered in pencil - but with no printer or publisher details. Fantasio was a First World War satirical magazine launched in August 1906 by Félix Juven. The only record of this print we can find is for the auction record of this copy. There is a little edgewear to the extensive margin but this could be easily hidden in framing. A lovely piece. Image area is 26.5cm x 41.5cm. The sheet is 41.5cm x 59cm. Blank to verso. Adolphe Willette 1857-1926 stands as a prominent figure among the bohemian artists of fin-de-siècle Montmartre renowned for his contributions as painter illustrator caricaturist and lithographer. He is today particularly remembered for his caricatures from the first world war. . S.P. unknown

19598701Elizabeth New Jersey/Cleveland Ohio: Elizabeth Printing Service/National Consumers Committee for Research and Education Inc 1959. Very good . 9†x 6â€. Stapled wrappers. pp. Very good plus: minimal wear and light toning.

This book tells the story of the Freehold New Jersey center for migratory farm workers and their families. It's notable because its author and illustrator were both African American women. Per the introduction the author Lenora B. Willette was

“a Southerner by birth and she first became interested in the plight of the migrants displaced from the plantations through the mechanization of cotton. Active in civic affairs and in the Consumers League of New Jersey she worked to secure the Migrant Labor Law and was appointed one of the five public members to the first Board by Governor Walter E. Edge. She was chosen to make a study of migrant education in the southern and western states as the official representative of the State. Her recommendations were used as a guide in setting up a school of education for children—the Freehold Summer School for Migrant Children; the first of its kind in the nation.â€

Willette was the also the president of the New Jersey State Federation of Colored Women's Clubs.

The artist was presumably Lenora's sister Naida Willette Page who contributed the cover art as well as two full page internal illustrations. Naida Willette Page initially studied engineering at Howard University before making national news in 1950 as the first African American to be trained at Johns Hopkins for medical illustration. She graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1951 later worked as the Howard University College of Medicine medical illustrator and was the Art Director for the Journal of the National Medical Association where she often illustrated the covers that featured historic Black doctors. Several sources state that she's considered the first African American medical illustrator.

A terrific combination of female author and illustrator. OCLC locates 8 copies over two entries. Elizabeth Printing Service/National Consumers Committee for Research and Education, Inc unknown

189625811896. An engraved poster welcoming the new year of 1896. A naked woman representing 1896 is at the helm of a boat which has the debris of 1895 in its wake. Tipped onto white backing cardboard. Signed in the plate A. Willette. To the bottom right is 'Phg V. Michel'. The debris of 1895 includes the words 'Panama' and 'Arton'. These appear to relate to Émile Arton a Jewish financier who was arrested in November 1895 for his part in financing in the Panama crisis. Adolph Willette was strongly anti-Semitic. Poster is clean and tidy with no significant marks. Black and white. Overall in Very Good condition. Poster size: 610 x 460 mm 24 x 18 inches.
