55230Berlin: Club der Kulturschaffenden "Johannes R. Becher" 1988. Slim octavo 22 × 13 cm. Original printed four-panel folder printed to recto and verso; fourfold leporello 8 pp. 30 loose leaves printed to both sides 1 folded gathering of 4 pp. all printed on coated paper with numerous reproductions of visual poetry some of which are full-page. Very good. First edition of the catalog for the first comprehensive exhibition of visual poetry in the GDR. The two curators of the exhibition the Chilean graphic designer muralist and set designer Guillermo Deisler and the graphic designer Karla Sachse met through mail art networks connecting Chile and the GDR. Following the Chilean military coup in 1973 Deisler fled into exile. Before settling permanently in the GDR he also lived for a time in France and Bulgaria. For the Mail Art artists the tradition of visual poetry was an important point of reference. Yet the interplay of text and image was not a harmless purely aesthetic one in East Germany; under the conditions of secret police surveillance Mail Art was also a strategy of creative encryption. The two curators did not exhibit the works solely out of historical interest but also out of a contemporary interest in production aesthetics. In this way prints from the Renaissance and Baroque periods were linked with futuristic Dadaist and contemporary experiments in Concrete Poetry from East and West. The loose-leaf pages of the catalog encourage the viewer to step beyond a purely historical perspective and actively try out other constellations. Here the freedom of the letters becomes for the viewer a freedom of the pages.

The focus was on contemporary visual poetry. Among those represented were: Gregorio Berchenko Julien Blaine Augusto de Campos Wladimir Dias-Pino Fria Elfen Korneliusz Francke Jesus Galdamez Ilse and Pierre Garnier Eugen Gomringer Klaus Groh Dick Higgins Kum Nam Baik Arrigo Lora-Totino the Noigandres Group Clemente PadÃn Michele Perfetti Décio Pignatari Robert Rehfeldt Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt Ãlvaro de Sá Veselin Sariev Thomas Schulz Serge Segay Shozo Shimamoto Miroljub Todorovic Jirà Valoch and Edgardo Antonio Vigo among several others. Folder illustrated with historical and contemporary visual and concrete poems by Johann Helwig George Herbert Carlo Carrá Johann Wolfgang Goethe Man Ray Kurt Schwitters and Clemente PadÃn.

As of April 2026 KVK OCLC show two copies in Germany and one in North America. unknown
50117Moscow: Izdatel'stvo Kritiko-bibliograficheskogo instituta 1935. Octavos 24.5 × 17 cm. Original decorative staple-stitched self-wrappers; 40 pp. per issue. Illustrations throughout. Very good. Six issues of this monthly journal dedicated to Soviet visual culture published 1932-1936 with wrapper design by the master graphic artist Vladimir Favorsky. Illustrated with reproductions of contemporary propaganda posters and paintings with accompanying reviews the issues offer a glimpse into the editorial criteria for Soviet poster art and Socialist Realist painting in the early years of their development. Each issue opens with reviews of political posters by artists such as Gustav Klutsis whose work is discussed as departing from Socialist Realism agitational posters of Galina Shubina who is critiqued for making "too masculine" the faces of female workers and anti-religious posters by Daniil Moor whose caricatures are said to be popular with workers during collective review sessions. Reviews of art exhibitions art publications theater performances as well as publications on musical performances and the opera close each volume. Art exhibition reviews include critiques of the exhibition "Soviet Turkmenia" "Spring exhibition of Moscow painters" and the individual show of the avant-garde painter Alexandr Labas an OST member and VKhUTEMAS teacher whose work would not be exhibited after 1936. The periodical appeared under different titles in 1932-1936 including "Fine art production" "Overview of the Arts" and "Poster Art and Reproductions."

The journal was published by the Critical Bibliographic Institute established by Narkompros in 1930. The objective of the Institute was to provide critical reviews and bibliographies of all print matter published in the Soviet Union with the goal of improving the general quality of the publications. At its inception in addition to visual culture the institute published ten other industry bulletins: "Social and political literature" "Technical literature" "Children's literature" etc. Due to the broad scope of the publications the quality of the reviews began to suffer and by 1936 the publications were transferred to respective specialized institutes staffed with appropriate experts. Publishers catalog to rear wrappers. One of 1800 copies printed. A striking clearly under-studied research source on early Soviet visual culture.

As of February 2026 KVK OCLC only show two holdings in North America with scattered issues at one additional institution. unknown

55185Prague: Nákladem ÄŒeskoslovenské grafické unie A.S. v Praze 1934. Quarto 29.3 × 20.8 cm. Original staple-stitched printed wrappers; 28 pp. including wrappers. Thirteen pages with isotype graphics including two in color. Lacking the twenty-nine leaves of isotype illustrations which were apparently issued along with the pamphlet. Very good save for light rust from staples to gutter of last few leaves. KonviÄka 1900-1971 originally from near HodonÃn was a teacher and author of several works on pedagogy and schooling with a special interest in art education crafts and visual statistics. From 1928 to 1934 he was active at the Masaryk Experimental Differentiated School in ZlÃn the home of the illustrious Tomáš BaÅ¥a Shoe Company which shaped the infrastructure and culture of the entire town. The school was one of three experimental schools in Czechoslovakia which allowed students to explore various hands-on projects rather than following traditional syllabi and it had direct ties to BaÅ¥a. Derek Sayer describes the entrepreneur's ambition for the town as follows: "ZlÃn in Moravia Tomáš BaÅ¥a's company town is a show-piece of designed modern living. Its administrative building a seventeen-story skyscraper built in 1937-38 may well have been the tallest building in Europe at the time. Still more distinctive was BaÅ¥a's provision of standardized family houses and apartments for his workers and a range of social amenities from "Masaryk Schools" to hospitals to community centers. It is an eminently modernist vision which the visiting Le Corbusier for one much appreciated" Derek Sayer The Coasts of Bohemia p. 200. The building housing the progressive Masaryk Schools built in 1927-1928 after plans by FrantiÅ¡ek Lydie Gahura was also a cutting edge construction which was demolished in 1988.

In the present work KonviÄka speaks to drawing instructors at schools and outlines the basic principles of visual statistics. He discusses Otto Neurath and the Vienna Method as well as the Moscow Insitute of Visual Statistics Izostat which in its own ways applied Neurath's methods. Another figure whose work he singles out as pioneering in this field is Augustin Tschinkel. Via the Czech journal "ZemÄ› SovÄ›tů" Land of the SoÂviets various examples of Soviet Isotype illustrations have made it onto the pages of KonviÄka's book. The pamphlet apparently accompanied twenty-nine leaves of isotype illustrations which are described in detail within but are lacking here.

As of June 2025 KVK OCLC show no copies apart from the Czech National Library. unknown

71496Kyoto Taisho 1914. In two volumes of ten. Large 8vo size 25.0 x 18.1 cm. 42 21; 21 leporello "pages" each with pochoir illustrations several heightened with silver and either double-sized covering two pages one page sized or smaller with two or more on one page for a total of 78 39; 39 different designs. Original near uniform printed soft covers heightened with silver and gold. = An amazing inspiring collection of pochoir stencil designs apparently for wallpaper and fabrics. Edited by Shôkyô Tsuji. Volume II is devoted to dyeing and volume III to weaving. Many of the very colourful illustrations are reminiscent of the Art Deco style yet more daring and colourful often using bold and unexpected colours and - of course - slightly ahead of the Art Deco period in western countries. The volumes are numbered two and three in Japanese. Volume I and 4-10 are not included. The bookblocks and covers are original. One leaf with some creasing before printing another a bit smudged due to offsetting of silver; tear in one fold. One rear board detached otherwise a very good clean set. paperback

"All the pieces described have been worked by a Lathe of the most common and least expensive description, with the addition only of the 'Eccentric Chuck' and 'Fixed Sliding Rest': my great wish and aim have been to confine my specimens of work to such as can be produced by the most economical apparatus, and, I flatter myself, the descriptions given with the plates will be found sufficiently clear and distinct, to enable any amateur, however young in the art, to accomplish any of them, should they be deemed worthy of imitation."?Preface.
