1920List3343United States 1920. Painted poster with affixed photograph measuring 14 x 21 inches. Toned with water damage and slight damage to edges; very good to excellent. A painted poster advertising the 1920 film The Girl Who Dared a Western directed by Clifford Smith and starring Edythe Sterling. The story follows Barbara Hampton a rancher’s daughter who is elected sheriff of a small town and must take on the cattle rustlers who are after her father. Sterling born Edith May Kessinger 1893–1962 was a prolific actress known for working with animals; after her film career she performed riding stunts in a Wild West show. Smith 1894–1937 was similarly prolific directing more than eighty films during his career—mainly Westerns which were especially popular during the silent era. This poster is hand-painted with a photograph from the film affixed and advertises 1¢ admission which was remarkably cheap even for the time. unknown

98119401Japan 1875. A small folding album 8 x 17 cm. original blue covers 18p. accordion folded soiled covers verso blank but evidence of a Japanese practicing his attempt at writing in English alphabet128 color woodcut illustrations. A very charming early attempt to teach the Japanese English alphabetical letters and numerals. Folded and reading from traditional left to right this work shows the Japanese the familiar "IROHA" alphabet in both Katakana & Romanized alph- abetical letters Romaji with Hiragana above. The most fa- scinating part are the profuse color woodblock illustrations of familiar Japanese objects each with Romanized letters & the appropriate Japanese. Such cute things as Inu Roonin Hato Niwatori Potsukkuri Pokkuri Hyotan Tonbo Ringo Dobin Soroban Taiko DaikonYoroi Wakizashi Kani Katsuo and a plethora of others. This work basically was used to train the Japanese to read Romaji first for familiar objects and thus begin the process of learning English ultimately to read English letters. Works of this subject are now quite RARE and seldom come to market many were basically used up in the learning process. This example well used cover soil bit thumbed but remarkably complete. Back cover has the Sumi penned date: Meiji 7 nen with a later cover title slip pasted on and Sumi ink title written. Brief commentary on the English language some text worn away balance complete. unknown

First Edition Thus. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Signed and inscribed by author dated 1918 atop first blank leaf. 66 pages. Accepted by the Royal Society of Canada as part of their Proceedings 1918. "Tsoqalem according to the Indians was a real historic character a member of the Cowichan tribe a Vancouver Island division of that linguistic group of the Salish stock known to us under the term Halkomalem whose habitat is and was the Lower Fraser Valley. How far the incidents of this story are literally true it is now impossible to say as myth and fact are inextricably woven together in it; but there can be little doubt that an Indian of the character of Tsoqalem existed some generations ago among the Cowichans and met with a tragic end at the hand of a woman somewhat in the manner recorded in the story." - from Foreword. Front cover loose but present. Portions of backstrip missing. Age-toning to contents. Above-average external wear. Binding tender. Amtmann 488 Watters p.88. The Citizen Printing & Publishing Co. 1841104249London: John Richards & Co 1841. 3rd Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London John Richards & Co. 1841 'Third edition revised and corrected to the present time'. Octavo ii title leaf xviii 476 civ appendix and index pages. Early half tan calf and marbled papered boards with a contrasting leather title-label on the spine; covers a little rubbed and scuffed with the head of both joints slightly cracked but firm; endpapers and adjacent leaves offset mainly from the leather turn-ins; minimal scattered light foxing; early marginal emphases in pencil and rarely in ink in particular to the later sections relating to the institutions and processes of government; related annotations on several pages; overall an excellent copy. Western's apparent aim was to demonstrate the superiority of the English constitution over all other forms of government. In that context the parochial provenance of this copy is hard to beat. The ownership signature of 'J.F. Burton Adelaide 1850' appears at the head of the title page and on the front free endpaper without the place-name. The latter is also signed in pencil 'J.H. Fisher' James Hurtle Fisher around which George Fife Angas has written 'Sept 21 1853. Presented by JHF to G.F. Angas'. The full name of George Fife Angas is also written there in pencil in what we recognize as a later secretarial hand indicating in our experience that the book came originally from Angas's library. Sir James Hurtle Fisher 1790-1875 'was one of the most important pioneers of South Australia': a lawyer he was appointed first Resident Commissioner of South Australia and arrived in the colony on the 'Buffalo' with the Governor's party. He eventually became a leader of the South Australian Bar 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. Angas needs no introduction; suffice to say the provenance takes some beating. We know little about Burton other than that he was an Adelaide solicitor; he is mentioned as such occasionally in the local newspapers of the day. John Richards & Co hardcover
130267Very Good. Two albumen paper photographs each 280 × 372 mm on the original card mounts each approximately 405 × 485 mm. Mounts uniformly tanned and lightly marked; trifling surface loss to silverfish to one plate confined mainly to the blank upper portion where it is inconspicuous; tiny blemishes near the top corners of the second plate; overall in excellent condition. The first image shows 665 'Lord of the Isles' a Problem class or Lady of the Lake class passenger locomotive. Clearly visible on the wheel arch is its build date 'Jany 1863'. The second image shows 2146 a DX Goods class locomotive. Both locomotives are shown in 'photographic grey' livery without tender and it is likely that these are official photographs for London and North Western Railway or the Crewe Works. <p>Both models were designed by John Ramsbottom and entered service in the late 1850s. However these examples are fitted with cabs suggesting that the photographs were taken after the appointment of his successor Francis Webb in 1871. Provenance: 'Mile End Railway Museum South Australia Inc.' inkstamp on the verso of one mount with 'Ex A.E. Cottrell 1/84' in ballpoint pen below the stamp. The contents of the museum were recently dispersed. 2 items. unknown
1838131290London: 'Ordered by the House of Commons to be Printed' 1838. Very Good. London 'Ordered by the House of Commons to be Printed' 1838. Foolscap folio 21 1 docket pages with numerous tables. Uncut and sewn as issued; outer pages slightly dusty; light foxing throughout; an excellent copy. Great Britain and Ireland Parliamentary Paper Number 685 of 1838. The bulk of this important paper pages 4-19 is given over to 'Nos. 5 6 7. Copy of a Despatch from Governor Sir James Stirling bearing Date 15 October 1835 forwarding a Memorial from the Inhabitants of Western Australia; together with a Copy of the Answer which has been returned thereto'. It is somewhat more than that. Stirling's covering letter explains that 'The signatures attached to this memorial . belong to about one-third of the adult male population of the settlement and represent also about one third of its property in land and capital. The grievances under which the memorialists consider themselves and their fellow colonists to labour are five in number'. The five grievances are well-aired; all signatories are identified; there are five pages of lists of lands reserved for public purposes individuals or 'Assigned to or Reserved for Civil Naval and Military Officers from commencement of the Colony in June 1829 to 6 October 1835'. The second and third lists provide name rank or situation where applicable number of acres district assigned or reserved - and when and remarks. A sample record for an individual is that pertaining to Robert Ramsay for whom an 'uncertain' number of acres was reserved at Plantagenet on 12 April 1831: 'Master of brig "Britannia". On south shore of Princes Royal Harbour reserved 18 months to form a whaling establishment and then resumed on failure of conditions'. The last four pages in this section contain Lord Glenelg's thoughts on the matter as of 7 March 1837. The limited information relating to the fledgling colony of South Australia occupies only pages 20 and 21. Ferguson 2511. <p>Provenance: the signature 'C.A.S. Hawker' is written in pencil at the head of the first page. Charles Allan Seymour Hawker 1894-1938 politician and pastoralist: his grandfather George Charles Hawker arrived in Adelaide with his brother Charles in September 1840. They settled on land at Bungaree near Clare in December 1841; C.A.S. Hawker he was born there. He was seriously wounded on several occasions at the Western Front losing one eye and 'his legs were in surgical irons to the end of his life'. He was a minister in the Lyons Government from 1932 until he 'was killed on 25 October 1938 when the aircraft "Kyeema" crashed into Mount Dandenong in Victoria. His untimely death was sharply felt. He had been an outstanding and respected figure in the Federal parliament whom some of his own party would have supported as prime minister. 19263973Cambridge Ne: F.M. Steele 1926. Very good. Four photographs in five segments 7 x 46 inches in length folding to 7 x 9 inches on a card mount 10 x 12 inches. Images joined with linen. Light wear to card photo generally clean and crisp. An interesting documentary panoramic photograph depicting the livelihood and agricultural success of one B.F. Trosper of Cambridge Nebraska. Each panel is captioned in the negative with the third photo occupying two segments of the panorama. The first shows Trosper a woman we presume to be his wife and two other men who may be hired hands; the woman sits at the wheel of a Model T which is parked parallel to the photographer while Trosper stand with one foot on the running board. The two men stand behind the car and a stacked pen of corn is used as a background. The caption reads "The finest background for pictures in Nebraska is corn. This is B.F. Trosper of Cambridge Neb." The second panel shows a worker and a dog standing to the right edge of the image which proudly displays seven pens of corn piled high: "12000 bushels of corn. One half of the amount that was raised in 1924-25 by B.F. Trosper of Cambridge Neb." The third image again shows the car parked in front of the corn pens on the left with a tractor and plow parked on the right side of the image the farmhouse and windmill in the background. Each panel of this photo has a caption: "B.F. Trosper one of south west Nebraska's successful farmers and stock growers" and "B.F. Trosper owns 1840 acres of land he has bought since 1884 commenced without a dollar Cambridge Neb." The final panel depicts Trosper's cows in the feed lot. Francis Marion Steele 1866-1936 was a noted itinerant Western photographer who captured cowboys and cattle drives roaming the West to document ranch life and farming operations. F.M. Steele unknown
19423662Various locations mainly Arizona Montana and Illinois 1942. Very good. 77 leaves illustrated with 617 original photographs from about 1.5 x 1 to 4 x 3 inches almost every page profusely annotated in white ink. Oblong folio. Contemporary faux-alligator brown leather string-tied. Edges and joints worn minor rubbing to covers. Compiler's ownership inscription on inside front cover reading "Property of Margaret E. Wells" with her address in Douglas Arizona. Occasional empty mounts minor wear to some photos but overall a very well-preserved collection. A densely-packed collection of annotated vernacular photographs documenting about a decade-and-a-half of an Arizona woman's life in the West and during various travels around the country in the early-20th century. Margaret E. Wells grew up on a ranch near Douglas Arizona which is well-represented in the photographs picturing various family members scenes around the exterior of the ranch house a shot of their school teacher Mrs. Wodham taking care of the livestock and more including Margaret as a younger child. There are also a healthy number of images around Douglas as well as other Arizona locations such as Cave Creek Ajo Grand Canyon National Park and Tombstone.<br /> <br /> As Margaret grows older the album records her travels taking her to numerous locations around the United States such as Yellowstone Park; Virginia City Montana; Bozeman Montana; campus views of Montana State College where she may have been a student for some time; desert scenes near Reno Nevada; the Chicago World's Fair in 1934; Long Beach California; San Francisco; Bryce National Park and Zion National Park in Utah; Washington; and Oregon. Some of the later photos show Margaret working at Spiegel Inc. and some of the last photographs document Margaret and her husband John with presumably their young child. Some of the more interesting images include Margaret and some of her companions dressed in "Mexican Sombreros" in Bozeman in 1927; two elevated shots of the town of Virginia City; a handful of shots of Wells' friend Buster "working on the railroad" in Arizona; and numerous shots of the various characters in a Spring 1939 rodeo in Douglas. A wide-ranging collection of annotated vernacular images recording about fifteen years in the life of a young Arizona woman in her home state as well as several other states before throughout and after the Great Depression. unknown
19223405Various locations in the American West 1922. Very good. Seventeen leaves illustrated with ninety-one photographs and four souvenir postcards extensively annotated in white ink on the album pages throughout. Contemporary tan two-ring cardboard wrappers front wrapper with black sheet laid down titles handwritten in white ink. Minor soiling rubbing and edge wear to boards. Minor fraying to some album leaves. A delightful homemade annotated vernacular photograph album compiled by D.S. Alexander memorializing his journey by automobile train and steamship through the American West and down the Pacific coast in August 1922. The album opens with a manuscript title page indicating the locations Alexander visited which included Manitou Peak Denver and Estes Park in Colorado; Salt Lake City and the Great Salt Desert in Utah; and several locations in California namely San Francisco Long Beach Hanford San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento. Manitou is the first location pictured followed by an elevated view and a few others of Denver and the surrounding landscape. He then travels west on the highway stopping in Loveland to visit a large dam and past Big Thompson Canyon on the way to Estes Park. In Utah he visits "Eagle Gate and Beehive House - Brigham Young's official residence" the Utah state house Pioneer Park and includes a couple of "Scenes from the Great Salt Desert in western Utah" on the train to California. In San Francisco he photographs Golden Gate Park and Alcatraz Island from a ferry boat before heading south on the steamship Yale. He includes several images on the shore at Long Beach as well as scenes at Sequoia Lake in Grant Park a vineyard in Kings County the Parker Ranch large trees in Grant Park and on the capitol grounds at Sacramento. Somewhat incongruously the final leaf of the album and the last three photographs pictures Alexander onboard a steamship on the Mississippi River in May 1923 on which he took an "excursion from Davenport to Muscatine Iowa." Ultimately the album is a wonderful and unique photographic snapshot of one young man's journey through Colorado Utah and California in the late summer of 1922. unknown
19331962Long Beach Ca 1933. Very good plus. Forty silver gelatin photographs. Twenty-six mounted on leaves with typed captions the remainder loose but captioned in negative. Images 3.5 x 5.75 inches and 3.5 x 4.5 inches. Images crisp and clean mounting leaves a bit rumpled with light wear. Small collection of images documenting the Long Beach Earthquake of May 10 1933. The images mounted to sheets are numbered and captioned in typescript with the heading "Earthquake Damage - Long Beach and Vicinity. March 14 1933". They provide a visual survey of the damage to major sites around Los Angeles and Compton such as the Masonic Temple the Dominguez Sub-station the Security First National Bank in Compton buildings along East Compton Boulevard and several of the local schools. The loose photos all show damage in Long Beach itself including the Seaside Hospital the Catholic Church the Imperial Theatre schools and an image captioned "Feeding refugees at Lincoln Park - Long Beach Cal."<br/><br/>The Long Beach Earthquake occurred just before 6 o'clock in the morning and was a magnitude 6.4 killing more than 100 people. The epicenter was offshore south of Los Angeles with much of the damage limited to Long Beach but also spreading north into southern L.A. It is notable that many of the images here document school buildings as more than 200 schools were damaged in the event. This highlighted a need for earthquake-proof construction in school buildings where the death toll would have been much higher had the earthquake struck during school hours and the legislature passed the Field Act on April 10th as a result. An altogether interesting set of images. unknown books

Lightly foxed old folds Very Good.<br/><br/> This evidently unrecorded broadside recounts the proceedings of a Convention. held at the State Capitol in Springfield to determine the feasibility of a regional program to advance the cultivation of sorghum or Chinese sugar cane. Notice of the Convention was reported in the Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal for 30 December 1857: "It is confidently believed that the Chinese Sugar Cane is well 'adapted to our soil and climate' and that it can be successfully and profitably cultivated and manufactured into molasses and sugar." <br/> The Agricultural Committee submitted information from growers and processors in Kentucky Pennsylvania Ohio and Indiana. The Mechanical Committee could not produce an acceptable proposal for a processing machine and the Convention adjourned with a recommendation that Illinois delegates gather more information for a future convention. Efforts to stimulate the growth of northern sugar cane continued through the succeeding decades.<br/>As of October 2019 not located on OCLC or the online sites of AAS NYPL Newberry Harvard Yale U MI.
