0012241Brookfield New York. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a very detailed ledger listing and accounting for a mid-19th century church congregation being the Second Brookfield Seventh-Day Baptist Church and kept by the Reverend Julius Maxson Todd 1819-1901 SEE BIO NOTES AT END OF LISTING. This incredible piece of history covers 13 years of the churchs history while Todd was pastor. The ledger is a detailed listing of member of this religious community for the years 1859 through 1872. It records the names of each congregant and the amount of money they donated to the parish. The importance and value of this ledger is the listing of the families. For a genealogist or anyone interested in the history of upstate New York in the mid 19th century this is a solid reference work that clearly locates individuals in a specific place and time. It also adds to the community history of the wider society in that rural part of New York state and contributes to the existing body of knowledge related to the Seventh Day Baptist religion. The book measures 7.5 inches by 6.0 inches and contains 120 pages. The cover is a hard paper covered with a marbled pattern. The cover is in reasonably good condition. The binding is sewn. It is loose but intact. The spin has lost its cover. The lined pages are in good condition. The handwriting is legible. 18494387New York:: V.G. Audubon 1849-54. First Royal Octavo Edition. Fine with original hand-coloring. A fine original hand-colored lithograph on paper. Royal Octavo 10.5 x 7 inches. Drawn from nature by John Audubon drawn on stone by William E. Hitchcock and lithographed printed and colored by JT Bowen Philadelphia. Accompanied by the original text written by the Reverend John Bachman DD. The Quadrupeds of North America; portrayals of 155 four-legged mammals native to North America depicted in their natural environment was a collaborative effort between the premier nineteenth century American Ornithologist Naturalist Artist and Frontiersman John James Audubon 1785-1851 his sons John Woodhouse Audubon and Victor Gifford Audubon and the naturalist Reverend John Bachman. The four men were unified in their desire to document and portray what they recognized as a dwindling resource; America's native animals amidst the natural beauty of the untouched American landscape. Their collective wisdom predicted the impending effects of Manifest Destiny- man's encroachment on the wilderness and natural landscape of North America- and as such was the impetus for the journey. To document and then portray America's native animals in the splendor and majesty of the uninhabited North American landscape the team traveled westward from Audubon's home in Mill Grove Pennsylvania up the Missouri River and through territory just previously explored by Lewis and Clark; from the Canadian border of the Northern Russian Territories- now Alaska- then southward to Mexico. Arduous and monumental the journey is recognized in the pathos of the compositions. However the true legacy of the work rests on John James Audubon's prolific vision and mastery of his subject and medium. Heretofore unseen The Quadrupeds of North American is a wildlife classic: an essential and timeless contribution to both Early American culture and the Art of American Wildlife Painting. The American Review a Whig journal heralded the national origin of the Quadrupeds: "We have at last have a Great National Work; originated and completed among us- authors artists and artisans of which are our own citizens the Bible of Nature!" 19370001744ITALY EGYPT THE HOLY LAND. Good. 1937. On offer is an interesting original photo journal created and compiled by Reverend Alex D. Riccio as he states on the first page wherein he has drawn the words "1930-1934 Remembrances of my stay in Europe Rev. Alex D. Riccio." In all there are approximately 184 photos all original save for a handful of real photo postcards all dated between 1930 - 1934. The first 133 photos are exactly that and one sees immediately the trip was a religious 'Grand Tour' as there are many photos of Catholic priests and students at a particular seminary in what is most certainly Italy. The names Cascine and Cortile Cortale are written on some of the photos. He also visits Jerusalem and Egypt with photos from those places also. Some other inscriptions include: "Avro from window; waiters at Council dinner taken in Cortile; Church of St. Claire Assisi; Feast of St. Magdalene; St. Paul's Rome; Facade of Holy Sepulcher; Mount Tabor; Unity of cars before entering into Jerusalem; Inside view of Mosque; Valley of Jehoshaphat; Mosque of Omar; Pyramids of Cairo; Garden of Olives; On board ship Palestine; Bethlehem" and many many more. In a later part of the album are 51 more photos: a number of wedding photos but 17 of them show the results of the great flood of 1936. I believe most of them are taken of the state of Maine possibly Portland Middletown and Cromwell. Some of these are also marked on the back. Many are rather incredible photos too. Most of the photos in this particular album are NOT glued in but placed in the album using the four corner mounts. Most of the photos are black and white and in good shape. The album itself as far as the pages and binding is in great shape but the cover is in bad shape. It is very worn around the edges and has fallen away from the binding. The leather cover features a super art deco design. It measures about 8" x 10 ¾". Please note: this is one of two photo albums compiled by Riccio. The related album is specific to his time at Fordham University.
M-5-E-1 unknown

'Angela Ricci Lucchi describes her work as follows: "I was already very interested in the use of the media and I started a kind of 'investigation' later published by the Pari & Dispari editions which consisted of asking everyone a series of essential questions: what is the rose for you Among others I asked Zavattini who sent me a beautiful letter. And I also asked Jervant whom I had just met. I started sending this message in June 1974; the operation continues to this day. Known and unknown people responded to me. Anyone who received these letters could send their reply. I didn't make any critical choices. This collection is in fact ordered only according to the date of the postmarks. In the same period the artist created numerous experimental and avant-garde cinema short films the so-called "scented films" Alice scented with roses 1975 the screening of which is accompanied by the diffusion of aromatic essences that interact with the film. The work is exhibited at the Mart museum in Rovereto and in 2018 it was part of the exhibition dedicated to "Rosanna Chiessi. Pari&Dispari" by the MAMbo Museum of Modern Art of Bologna and published in the catalogue." pariedispari website See also: "Cos'è la rosa per te" by Filippo Perfetti. This essay offers a reinterpretation of the early artistic work of Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi through the lens of analogical thought exploring the meaning and structure of their initial creations. Starting from Ricci Lucchi's 1976 inquiry "Cos'è la rosa per te" it reconstructs an aesthetic and methodological path that intertwines fairy tale synesthesia and cataloging placing their work in dialogue with the contemporary scenes of independent cinema and visual art. The essay argues that for the two artists the film should be understood as a field of forces in which things are no longer fixed entities but relational nodes. In this light the question "cos'è la rosa per te" – "What is the rose for you" – becomes emblematic of a heuristic method based on plurality incompleteness and the tension between elements proposing analogy as the central epistemological structure of their artistic project.
Pari Editori & Dispari
18500010080France. Good with no dust jacket. 1850. Ephemera. On offer is an outstanding example of the Catholic Churchs teachings at a grass-roots level in 19th century France. This beautiful handwritten sermon is titled Sermon de III Dimanche de Careme Sermon for the 3rd Sunday of Lent and notes that it is given by Monsieur le Cure the Parish Priest. The handwriting is small and clear and an excellent example of the penmanship of the time. The source of the sermon is unknown. There is no specific reference to a parish community or author. We do know from its title that it was written to be given at a mass on the 3rd Sunday of Lent. The Easter Season of Lent and Easter Sunday is the most important in the Catholic church more so than Christmas. An excerpt from the sermon: Les miracles que Dieu fait en notre faveire sont toujours des marques de la bonte et de la misericordie et les infirmites que JC aurit sont la figures des differentes maladies de notre ame .Translation: The miracles that God does in our favor are always marks of goodness and mercy and the infirmities that JC would have are the images of the different diseases of our soul.Throughout his text you can see where he has crossed out words and edited expressions. This was very much a living manuscript in his hands. For a social historian this is an excellent look into the world of the average French person and into the thought processes of the clergy who so dominated life in the small towns and villages of France in the 19th century. This manuscript measures 6.0 inches by 6.25 inches and contains 34 carefully handwritten pages. It is 100% complete. The manuscript is simply folded along a centre line. 18497317New York:: V.G. The American Review a Whig journal heralded the national origin of the Quadrupeds: "We have at last have a Great National Work; originated and completed among us- authors artists and artisans of which are our own citizens the Bible of Nature!"
