The brother of South Australian pioneer George Fife Angas William Henry Angas 1781-1832 'was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne 6 Oct. 1781; went to sea and was captured by a French privateer and imprisoned for a year and a half. He afterwards commanded ships of his father's but became a Baptist minister in 1817 after a year's study at Edinburgh. In 1822 he was appointed missionary to seafaring men by the "British and Foreign Seamen's Friend Society and Bethel Union." He travelled to various ports and foreign countries for religious purposes and was serving a chapel at South Shields when he died of cholera 9 Sept. 1832' 'Dictionary of National Biography'. <p>The first appendix comprises nautical aphorisms from his commonplace book. Black-decorated green cloth lightly bumped at the head of the spine; a near-fine copy with the two-colour pictorial dustwrapper lightly bumped and very lightly sunned on the spine. The author was chaplain to a succession of eight commando squadrons during the Second World War. There is a lengthy gift inscription on the front free endpaper from 'Des C. Smith Chaplain 43 Batt. RSAR 1967 - 10/9/72'. Text on both flaps of the dustwrapper includes the following: 'Funds accrued from the sales of this book will be donated to Legacy. Here again we gratefully acknowledge the splendid contribution that has been made by Mr Bert Bache 2/2nd in designing and giving this impressive Dust Jacket'. The text on the rear flap ends with an errata sic: 'Refer page 211 para 2: "Loves" should read "Lives'''. Loosely inserted is an order form and a contemporary photocopy of the amended original prospectus: 'Only 10 copies left of first edition. For the further financial sake of Legacy 100 new orders required for a reprint of the book. Be both a buyer and a salesman'. The original prospectus notes that the book is 'a hard cover with an Arresting Dust Jacket'. <p>We have not identified a reprint but we have handled identical copies of the book with a variant dustwrapper: it is printed in green on white paper unillustrated with minimal lettering on the spine and front panel. Perhaps this decidedly unarresting version without the printed erratum might in fact be the first-issue dustwrapper. [The Author] hardcover

A Portuguese book of missionaries in Western Africa during the time of the Portuguese colonisation of Africa. This book is volume four in a series. This book is a Portuguese account of the "Monumental African Missionary in Western Africa" from 1469 to 1599. Including various papers by Paulo Dias de Novais a Portuguese colonizer of Africa and a nobleman of the Portuguese Royal Household who arrived in Angola in 1575. Collated and annotated by Padre Antonio Brasio. With twelve illustrated plates. A loose page in the book 'Addenda & Corrigenda ao iii Volume' however doesn't appear to be from this book but from a previous volume. In the original paper wraps. Externally generally smart. Some handling marks and shelfwear to the boards and spine. Discolouration to the tail of spine due to tape a fragment of which has been torn off. Paper sticker to the tail of spine. Bumping to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Minor tears to the head and tail of the front joint however remains firm. Internally. firmly bound. Pages are bright. A very scarce work with only one on Jisc held at the University of Oxford Libraries. A transcript of a sermon given at the Gosport Chapel. The sermon was given on the anniversary of St. John the Evangelist on his feast day on the 27th December. Direct from the library of the Lodge of Harmony. Preached by Reverend Brother Parker who was the curate of the chapel. Slip tipped into the recto of the front endpaper 'Extract From the Minute Book of the Lodge of Harmony. December 27th 1814. A Regular Lodge was held to Commemorate the Festival of St. John the Evangelist. The Lodge was opened in the different degrees when it was Consecrated after the usual form by our Rev. Bro. Parker. The Lodge went in procession to Church to hear an appropriate Sermon preached by the aforesaid Rev. Gentleman and returned again in the same order. There were 51 Brethren of the Lodge present and 7 Visitors'. The Fareham Lodge of Harmony was founded in 1796 under charter from the Ancients Grand Lodge. Rebound in a cloth binding. Externally smart. A couple of light marks to the rear board. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Puncture marks from former binding close to the gutter. The author has compiled the information in his book mostly gathered from original Byzantine sources. Bernardin Menthon the priest of the French Church in Bursa made the most comprehensive work on the monasteries that make up the identity of Uludag of Brousse Mt. First edition with original pictorial cloth boards and fifty illustrations of pro-suffrage political cartoons. An uncommon text. 336 pages. Keith's tone is often tongue-in-cheek but his purpose is to promote women's suffrage. As he argues in the preface: "Is it not the man that is unwomanly ans unmanly too in strutting about as if he were the lord of creation . Where is the consistency in allowing a woman to own property and take care of men's childrne and not giving her the power to protect either of them" While some countries extended minor voting rights to women in the year of this book's publication full suffrage would not be granted to American women until almost decades later. Boards toned and lightly soiled but the front cover remains attractive and the design is still bold. Spine sunned and bumped at head and tail spine titles faded; front hinge worn through for 3.5" inches. One-inch chip on spine shows shelfwear. Internal text block tight and the pages are clean and bright. Overall in good condition. As of March 2022 less than 15 copies held by libraries and institutions worldwide per OCLC Wolrdcat. Rara opera scritta dal dottor Dufouart, uno dei medici chirurghi che seguì Napoleone durante le sue campagne belliche. Considerato uno dei migliori e dei più preziosi trattati in questo campo. Lopera si distingue per leleganza, per la purezza dello stile e per le nuove ed importanti riflessioni presenti nel testo. Prov.: Ex-libris su carta incollato al contropiatto anteriore con armi, stemma e motto (Sigil Malan de Merindol - Deus arx mea). Probabilmente il libro è appartenuto alla collezione privata di Magnus Andre De Merindol Malan (1930-2011) [Politico, difensore dell'apartheid in Africa; fu nominato capo dell'esercito sudafricano nel 1973, poi capo della forza di difesa sudafricana nel 1976, quindi ministro della Difesa nel 1980 e successivamente presidente del consiglio; pose le basi per l'indipendenza della Namibia dal Sudafrica nel 1990].
