1968163661968. Civil RightsMLK Jr.Vietnam WarAnti-War King Martin Luther Jr. Speeches by The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. About the War in Vietnam 1968 marks a decisive and controversial moment in the Civil Rights Movement when the famed preacher and activist voiced a strong opposition to American military intervention in Vietnam. Delivered between April 1967 and February 1968 these addresses articulate King's moral theological and political indictment of the Vietnam War at a moment when such criticism risked alienating liberal allies and federal support. In speeches titled "Vietnam and the Struggle for Human Rights" "The Domestic Impact of the War in Vietnam" and "Vietnam Is Upon Us" King frames the war as an issue inseparable from racial injustice and economic exploitation at home asserting "my conscience leaves me no other choice." The volume reflects the final year of King's life when he increasingly linked civil rights poverty and global anti-colonial struggle into a unified critique of American power.

King Martin Luther Jr. Speeches by The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. About the War in Vietnam. New York: Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam 1968. Printed April 1968. The pamphlet gathers three speeches originally delivered April 1967 November 11 1967 and February 6 1968 and was issued under the auspices of Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam the interfaith organization King helped organize in 1965. Also included is a folded letter from the organization dated October 1968 introducing the collection and listing members.

Published only weeks after King's assassination in April 1968 the collection preserves his sustained argument that the war represented a "nightmarish conflict" draining moral authority and resources from the struggle against poverty and racism. By framing Vietnam as both a foreign policy crisis and a moral catastrophe King publicly aligned the Civil Rights Movement with global antiwar activism intensifying divisions within American political life. The inclusion of the October 1968 organizational letter further situates the pamphlet within an active interfaith network mobilizing clergy and laity against U.S. intervention. Light tanning to extremities otherwise clean and well preserved. Overall condition near fine. A contemporaneous documentary record of King's most politically consequential and controversial public stance during the final year of his leadership. unknown

18550001548SAGAMORE PLYMOUTH MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Good. 1855. On offer is an interesting original pre Civil War and Civil War era manuscript diary journal and catchall scrapbook handwritten and compiled by we believe Luther Douglas b.1828 and then later his son Charles Everett Douglas b.1852 between 1855 and November 1862. Casual research finds Luther born in Plymouth and Charles in Sagamore Massachusetts. This is backed up with many entries suggesting easy visits and trips to Plymouth. The book is marked "Hired Mens Book" but that is crossed out and then is full of Douglas' writings and clippings save for a couple of pages used by a child Charles it appears. This unusual book has approximately 122 pages with entries a short scrap area: 10 pages have poetry cut from newspapers and/or magazines covering up the journal entries dated from January 1855 or so. This is followed by three pages of entries and then scraps on 19 Presidents not in chronological order are pasted down covering other entries. These were placed later as evidenced by the Abraham Lincoln clipping mentioning the President's martyrdom. The balance is a personal journal and diary centering around work related entries mostly for Sarah or Jacob Perry then Handel Tripp and many many more visits purchases trips and much more. There are a small number of ephemeral inserts one of particular genealogical interest as it is a slip of paper with the note: 'one man's family'. The book itself is a board covered book measuring approximately 6 1/4" x 7 3/4". The paper is somewhat brittle in spots but overall the book is G.; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF CHARLES EVERETT DOUGLAS LUTHER DOUGLAS GENEALOGY MASSACHUSETTS SAGAMORE PLYMOUTH AMERICAN HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORYantiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito papel. . unknown

1834WRCAM55483Boston: Published by the Author 1834. 43pp. Modern green cloth gilt spine title. Faint foxing small American Antiquarian Society deaccession stamp on verso of last text leaf. Very good. A rare early work by Rhode Island labor organizer Seth Luther following his first printed work AN ADDRESS TO THE WORKING-MEN OF NEW-ENGLAND. and his AN ADDRESS ON THE RIGHT OF FREE SUFFRAGE published the previous two years. Seth Luther 1795-1863 was born in Providence Rhode Island and worked as a carpenter by trade. Like his earlier publications the present ADDRESS was printed from a speech Luther delivered this time before the Union Association of Working Men in Charlestown Massachusetts in late January 1834. Setting the tone for the speech in the first paragraph Luther rails against those "clothed in purple and fine linen" on the backs "of those who labor day after day." The present work is further described by the DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY as follows: "A denunciation of political and religious as well as economic oppression.the author laid down the following program of reform: universal equal education by means of manual labor schools supported at the public expense; abolition of all licensed monopolies; abolition of capital punishment and of imprisonment for debt.equal taxation for property; and an effective mechanic's lien law. His deadly sincerity forceful language grim humor and biting sarcasm made his pamphlets valuable weapons in the labor movement."

This title is rare with this copy being the only one appearing in Rare Book Hub formerly offered by M&S Rare Books. Not in Sabin. OCLC seems to report about a baker's dozen physical copies over several records. This is the first copy ever handled by this firm. Adams RADICAL LITERATURE IN AMERICA p.43. Influential manual for mothers and nurses by Holt 1855-1924 an American author physician and pioneer in the field of pediatrics who helped shape the New York Babies Hospital into the leading pediatric facility of its time. The book was expanded from Holt's Catechism for Nurses 1893 a pamphlet prepared for nursery-maids during their four months training at the Babies Hospital. "The nurses studied the catechism and when they graduated took it with them. There followed requests for copies from their employers and the supply was soon exhausted. It was apparent there was a popular demand for something of the kind. The catechism was expanded and in 1894 The Care and Feeding of Children made its appearance.Probably no one would have been more surprised than Dr. Holt or his publishers had they been told that they were launching a volume that was to go through seventy-five printings and which was to be translated into Spanish Russian and Chinese. The book became the mainstay of many a worried mother and exerted no inconsiderable influence on the profession as well for the practitioners had to keep abreast of the pediatric knowledge which the mothers possessed" DUFFUS R.L.
