4to. (6) ff, 323 [i.e. 327] pp, (1), including additional engraved title signed C. Galle after N. van der Horst, vignette on title-page, frontispiece portrait of the dedicatee (Mademoiselle D'Arschot) and 6 full-page plates by Galle after A. Sallaert. Contemporary velum. Old ex-libris markings of various religious libraries on pastedown and title-page only; tiny areas of loss to uppermost margin of added engr. title; very occasional light dampstaining; with engravings in excellent, dark impression. Rare sole edition of this Flemish devotional work on the Passion, curiously dedicated to a princess’ lady-in-waiting. It is illustrated with seven full-page engravings by Cornelius Galle, son of Philip, after the painter and draughtsman Antoine Sallaert. Although they cannot be considered proper emblems with mottoes, Praz mentions de la Serre and his devotional books passim in Studies in Seventeenth-Century Imagery (Vol II, p. 133). - The present work bears a curious dedication to the lady-in-waiting of the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Philip IV. 'Demoiselle' d'Arschot, as she is called, is pictured in the engraved frontispiece as an adolescent girl, already exemplifying the virtues of a pious noblewoman. She clutches in one hand a string of prayer beads, while in front of her is her own personal altarpiece with a candle and crucifix, and a cloth-covered lectern for reading her devotions while kneeling. - The text itself is divided into six chapters, each of which is headed by an engraving incorporating its relevant themes. The text is intended to impress upon the reader the manifestations of God's love, as observed in the story of the Passion. As Van der Vennet notes, the Brussels painter Antoine Sallaert's rich designs are especially suited to Puget de la Serre's Merveilles: “the subjects of [Sallaert's] compositions display on the one hand an attachment to the tradition but at the same time an openness to the new developments which were taking place during the 17th century. While his saints conserve their legendary attributes, certain forms of symbolism, popular during the Middle Ages, disappear... However, neither the Counter-Reformation, nor the doctrines of the Council [of Trent] managed to wipe out the taste for the marvelous; which was fed during the 17th century by religious ecstasies and visions. The great devotional images which Sallaert composed for the graver are full of such raptures...” (“Le Peintre bruxellois”, p. 85-7). - Van der Vennet also speaks highly of the present work in particular: “In Les Merveilles de l'Amour Divin, which appeared in 1633, the master illustrates six episodes of the Passion. The elegance and precision of the designs tends towards a beautiful reservedness in evoking these dramatic subjects. As to the composition of these pages, the images appear so large than one almost forgets their small format. The admirable 'Christ of the Pieta' (fig II) and the persons surrounding him, would have their place on a great altarpiece...” (p. 93). - The engraver Cornelius Galle (1576-1650) represented the second generation of the great Galle dynasty. From 1596-1610 Cornelius lived and worked in Rome, before returning to Antwerp where he collaborated with his father as well as preparing his own plates. - OCLC shows a single US copy, at Harvard. 169021373Paris: N. Bonnart 1690. Very Good. Paris: N. Bonnart ca. 1690. First Edition. 12mo 15.5cm.; armorial binding of Madame de Maintenon full crimson morocco adorned with her coat-of-arms on both covers triple-ruled in gilt with diminutive repeating rampant lions at each corner elaborate gilt spine in six compartments all edges gilt marbled endpapers; 100pp.; illus. and calligraphic text printed entirely from copper-plates this copy featuring the more often-found depiction of an empty cross within a crown of thorns printed on title page verso. Light rubbing to extremities brief discoloration to upper cover from exposure to damp inoffensive surface abrasion to front pastedown from previously-removed ex libris slightly later ink note in Latin to front flyleaf else a Very Good or better copy of an exquisite production in a desirable presentation binding. Though dedication signed in text "N.D.T." a sermon of this title can be found in the complete works of Jacques Bénigne Bossuet 1627-1704 tutor of the same children to whom Maintenon had served as governess.

Small and beautifully-produced prayer book dedicated to Madame de Maintenon 1635-1719 by then the morganatic not-so-secret second wife of Louis XIV published for the use of the Maison Royale de Saint-Louis a boarding school Maintenon founded in St. Cyr for the education of the orphans and children of the poorer French nobility. The text printed entirely from copper-plates is interspersed with delicate vignettes of flowers views of the French countryside and soothing religious imagery the lamb asleep on the cross details presumably dotting the text to keep Maintenon's wards engaged while deep in prayer.

Volumes bound in the Maintenon armorial bindings are relatively scarce their owner having not organized any semblance of a personal library until quite late in life. Though married to the king of France for over thirty years Madame de Maintenon née Françoise d'Aubigné later Madame Scarron came from a modest background she never forsook. Raised in the Calvinist church the young Aubigné was orphaned at an early age and subsequently educated in an Ursuline convent where she converted to Catholicism her devotion to the Church one of her most notable qualities throughout her long and increasingly illustrious career. By the time she reached womanhood her straitened circumstances led her to marry the significantly older and paralytic author Monsieur Scarron noting that "I have entered a union in which the heart requires little and the body in truth nothing at all" my translation. Widowed within less than a decade the beautiful and pious Madame Scarron had by now seduced the French nobility at court and was quickly summoned by the Marquise de Montespan to be governess to the children she had borne Louis XIV out of wedlock. It was in this role that she caught the king's attention who bestowed upon her the money which she used to purchase the Chateau de Maintenon as well as the title of Marquise de Maintenon. During the decade of the 1670s the king spent more and more of his time with his children's governess causing a predictable rupture between her and the Marquise de Montespon though Maintenon forever avowed that she never stooped to the level of mistress. In 1683 Louis XIV and Madame de Maintenon were married in a secret ceremony and while she never filled the role of Queen of France she was the king's chief advisor until the end of his days. See Ernest Quentin-Bauchart "Les Femmes Bibliophiles de France" 1886 pp. 269-272.

A note about the binding: The example of the Maintenon coat-of-arms depicted on this volume not listed in Olivier-Hermal-Roton presumably having been produced specially for this the dedication copy--the British Library notes a similar example of another unique cut on their dedication copy of Cordemoy's "Divers Traitez de Controverse" 1701. Very Good Bulgarian Original blue cloth bdg. with embossing. Slightly stains on boards and toned on pages. Otherwise a very good copy. 12mo. (16,5 x 12 cm). In Bulgarian. 1230, [2] p. [HOLY BOOK IN BULGARIAN PRINTED IN TSARIGRAD (CONSTANTINOPLE)] Bibliia sirech sveshtenoto pisanie na Vetkhiia i Noviia zavet: Viarno i tochno prevedena ot pûrvoobraznoto. [.] In 1840 5,000 copies of the first complete translation of the New Testament were printed in Smyrna by the British and Foreign Bible Society. A second edition which was printed in Smyrna in 1850 was an almost exact reprint of the 1840 edition. A third edition followed in 1853 with 15,000 copies. The fourth edition was published in 1857 in Bucharest, and for the first time civil characters type was used. In 1859, two more editions were published. In 1866, a new "pocket" edition with text revised by Elias Riggs and Dr. Albert Long was printed in Constantinople. The New Testament was revised and reprinted a total of nine times. In the period from 1840 to 1860 the Eastern (Tarnovo) dialect was adopted as literary Bulgarian language and the Macedonian dialect, in which the New Testament had been translated, was widely rejected. By 1858 Neofit Rilski had finished large portion of the Old Testament. Riggs met with Neofit Rilski and discussed a possible revision of the Bulgarian New Testament to remove the Macedonian dialect elements. Neofit objected the revision, so Riggs took the translation and returned to Constantinople. In January 1859 Riggs invited the Bulgarian teacher Hristodul Kostovich to help him with the revision. In 1862 Long and Riggs visited the noted Bulgarian writer and poet Petko Rachov Slaveykov in Tryavna. Slaveykov agreed to help with the translation and began the work on the revising of Neofit's New Testament at once. Long joined the revision of the New Testament into the Eastern dialect in 1863 and later assisted with the translation of the Old Testament. In June 1871, after more than 12 years of revision and translation, 36,000 copies of the complete Bible translation in Bulgarian were published in Constantinople. The translation came to be known as the "Tsarigrad (Constantinople) Edition". Tsarigrad [or; Tsargrad, Tzargrad, Czargrad] Tsargrad is a Slavic name for the city or land of Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, and present-day Istanbul in Turkey. Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original brown half morocco, raised bands to spine, gilt lettering. three volumes set: (2 volumes in one: [2], 641 p.; third volume: [8], 379 p.). Foxing and stains on pages, overall a very good copy set. Extremely rare first Turkish edition translated by Nüzhet Muhammad (translator of Ministry of Education) of this first Muslim source to use Western scholarly works in order to ascertain the errors and contradictions of the Bible, in response to the allegations made by certain Christian missionaries against Islam and especially to counter Mizân al-Haqq [i.e. The balance of truth], a book written by Basel Mission missionary in Central Asia and Trans-Caucasus Karl Gottlieb Pfander (1803-1865) against Islam. Izhar al-Haqq aims to respond to Christian criticism of Islam. The doctrine of the Trinity is purportedly contested using biblical, Christian, and other sources. The book was originally written in Arabic in 1864, this six-volume book was later translated (or summarized) into English, Turkish, Urdu, and Bengali. This set is printed in the Vilâyât Printing House of Bosnia-Herzegovina. "'The Demonstration of the Truth' served as a summary of all possible charges against Christianity and was therefore used after al-Kairânawî's death as a sort of encyclopedia since al-Kairânawî extended the material of former polemicists like 'Ali Tabarî, Ibn Hazm or Ibn Taymiyya to a great extent". (Schirrmacher). Rahmatullah Kairanawi Al-Hindi, (1818-1891), was a Sunni Muslim scholar who is a descendant of the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, his full lineage is mentioned in family sources. Sheikh Hakeem Abdul Kareem who was the 8th great-grandfather of Rahmatullah was Emperor Akbar's physician. Kairanwi began receiving traditional Islamic education at the age of 6, memorizing the Qur'an at 12. He also learned Arabic and Persian. Later he moved to Delhi where he studied different disciplines including mathematics and medicine. In 1837 the Church Mission Society appointed Karl Gottlieb Pfander who was known for converting Muslims to Christianity, described by Eugene Stock as "perhaps the greatest of all missionaries to Mohammedans", to Agra in Northern India, where in 1854 he engaged in a famous public debate with leading Islamic scholars. The main Muslim debater was Kairanawi, being assisted by English-speaking Muhammad Wazîr Khân and influential Islamic writer Imad ud-din Lahiz. Kairanawi used arguments from recent European theologically critical works that Pfander was unfamiliar with, having left Europe before these were published, though his main source of reference was the apocryphal sixteenth-century Gospel of Barnabas, which he held to be authentic. Following armed uprisings against the British in which he personally took part, Kairanawani (his property was confiscated by the Imperial British Raj) had to leave all his property (auctioned later), and board a ship in Bombay. Arriving at the port of Mocha, Yemen, he walked to Mecca. The journey took two years. Özege 8894.; TBTK 674/6745.

32mo (30 x 48 mm). 2 parts in one volume. (2), 148, (2), 149-256 pp. With 2 engraved title-pages and 14 engraved plates. Contemporary giltstamped red morocco with central black morocco oval onlay to covers bearing the sacred initials "IHS". All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Third edition of this exceedingly rare abridged children's Bible in its original binding, previously published in 1771 and 1774. Hariss's "Bible in Miniature" is the second of its kind in England, preceded only by the 1727 "Biblia" printed for R. Wilkin (the date being altered by hand to 1728 in many copies). - This is a charming specimen of what is commonly called a thumb Bible due to its small size, a genre that flourished particularly during the 18th century, although the fashion continued well into the 19th century. While copies of the almost identical "Bible in Miniature", published in 1780 by Elizabeth Newbery, are much more frequently found, the plates of the Harris edition are "superior to the frequently worn-out illustrations used by Newbery" (Spielmann). They feature key scenes and figures of the Old and New Testaments, including Adam and Eve, King David, Joseph of Arimathea, the Nativity, Resurrection, and Judgment Day. - In excellent condition, with contemporary handwritten ownership of "Miss Cooper" to flyleaf. Rarely seen at auction: only a handful of copies in libraries worldwide, merely on microfilm in the UK; 3 copies in the United States. Bondy, Miniature Books 33. Cf.
