Only Romanian translation of the "Encheiridion tou orthodoxou christianou", prepared at the commission of Alexandru Isopscul, ephorus of Valachian schools. "Sehr umfangreiches Glaubensbuch, aus dem Griechischen übersetzt" (E. C. Suttner, "Rumänische Katechismen", in: Kirche im Osten XVI [1973], 127-138: 131). The Russian writer and diplomat Alexandru Stourdza (1791-1854), of Moldavian-Romanian descent, was related to the Greek phanariot family Mourousis through his mother. He served as secretary to Ioannis Kapodistrias and penned the first draft of the Holy Alliance. A supporter of the Greek struggle for independence, he helped many Greek war refugees. "Inspired by the aid provided to the Greek revolutionaries by Russia in 1828, Stourdza sought to influence developments on his own. He published his 'Enchiridion or Manual of Orthodox Christians' in Greek and then in Romanian" (cf. F. Heyer, Die orientalische Frage im kirchlichen Lebenskreis [Wiesbaden 1991], 232). He retired to Odessa in 1830, where he lived as a writer. - Somewhat brownstained near beginning and end; unsophisticated cloth binding rubbed and stained. Romanian notes on endpapers. Excessively rare, early edition of one of the most important and influential manuals of exorcism and remedies against evil spirits, first published in Venice in 1600 and once included in the Index of forbidden books. Visconti, a professional exorcist from Milan, belonged to the order of SS. Barnaba e Ambrogio, a company of secular priests founded by Carlo Borromeo. He taught the art of exorcism (he is referred to on the title-page as a professor of the art of exorcism and perhaps taught at the university of Pavia) and flourished between the late 16th and early 17th century. - This highly interesting treatise addresses all aspects of exorcism and provides the theological and theoretic framework for the practise of exorcism as well as a manual of instruction on techniques, prayers, formulae, rituals and all sorts of remedies to expel the Evil within. As pointed out in the initial dedication, Visconti hoped that his book would help reduce the number of cases of demonic possession recently recorded in the Milanese area. - Top spine end chipped. Dédicace de "Damianus Zenarus" au patricien et sénateur vénitien Francisco Longo, table des matières "Capitum Elencus" avec les huit parties du livres et leurs sous-parties, dites chapitres (3 pp.), suivi de l'"Index Compendiosus Secundum Alpha beti ordinem operis praesentis", le tout non paginé et faisant 61 pp. en tout. Le corps du livre est paginé de façon curieuse : deux pages sont comptées comme une seule page, avec un nouveau nombre à chaque page de droite, soit 396 pp. indiquées pour 794 + 1 pp. Avec lettrines tout au long du texte. Très petits trous de mites épars, en particulier en haut près de la reliure des premières pages de la Summa proprement dite, qui se réduisent rapidement jusqu'à disparaître totalement dès la page 13, sans perte au texte. Blank covers, spine with calligraphic mention of part of the title and the author's (sur)name, three raised bands underlined with engraved lines, non-underlines seams near the head and tail, headbands. All edges marbled. Calligraphic mention of "P. Benedictus Ambrosettus" on the back of the title page, a little gaping space at the binding near the title page, the block of pages then being bound in a homogeneous manner. Dedication of "Damianus Zenarus" to the Venetian patrician and senator Francisco Longo, table of contents "Capitum Elencus" with the eight parts of the book and their sub-parts, called chapters (3 pp.), followed by the "Index Compendiosus Secundum Alpha beti ordinem operis praesentis", all unpaginated and 61 pp. The body of the book is paginated in a curious way: two pages are counted as a single page, with a new number on each right-hand page, i.e. 396 pp. indicated for 794 + 1 pp. Very small moth holes scattered around, especially at the top near the binding of the first pages of the Summa itself, which quickly become minimal until they disappear completely from page 13, without loss to the text. Marbling of the edges partially discolored. Spine and covers well preserved, pages noticeably clean.

Later he was named censor to the Inquisition and confessor of de Olivares the favorite of Philip IV whom he followed when he was exiled from Madrid." Ripalda is described by Southwell as "religious . subtle in argument sound in opinion clear & focused in expression and well-versed in St. Augustine & St. Thomas. According to Drews no Jesuit ever occupied this chair at the University of Salamanca with more honor."
