He combined the precise finish of the Leiden tradition learned from his master Eglon van der Neer with the classical standards of the French Académie Royale. From 1697 he was Kabinettsmaler court painter to Johann Wilhelm Elector of Palatine in Dusseldorf. </p><p>Brown leather spine worn and chipped paper title label illegible marble paper boards scuffed and stained torn stubs of two plates removed at front some plates coming loose from binding. All plates with wide margins good solid impressions of the engravings with even age-toning to the paper. The wear is honest and reflects the character and journey of its centuries old life. Ex library each volume bears a stamp on the title page and on the front pastedown reading "Library Sulpician Seminary Washington D.C." yet there is very little library spore. Leaves show age toning and foxing throughout yet the text is uncompromised and legible. Some joints are weakening yet bindings remain sound with the understanding that works of this age should be handled with reverence and care. Six of the seven volumes are rated "very good". The seventh is in "fair" condition as the spine shows erosion the remainder of a library label is at the foot and boards are braced with vintage black tape. Provenance is indicated by a previous owner's bookplate which is attached to each front pastedown reading: "Charles Carroll of Inner Temple England Second Son of Daniell Carroll of Litterlouna England in the Kings County in the Kingdom of Ireland 1702." A lovely piece of history and beautiful for any collector particularly of early 18th century religious works in French. <br><br>ABOUT THE AUTHOR & THIS SET Which is Part One: "Isaac-Joseph Berruyer 1681 to 1758 Paris was a French Jesuit historian. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1697. He is most famous for his work A History of the People of God published in three parts. The first part of his History bears the title Histoire du peuple de Dieu depuis son origine jusqu. la venue du Messie 7 vols. Paris 1728. A revised and augmented edition of this was published in Paris in 1733. <br><br>Next followed Paris 1734 a supplement containing a continuation of the prophecies of the Old Testament the History of Job maps necessary for understanding the sacred history etc. By 1736 seven editions of the work had been issued. It was translated into German Italian Spanish and Polish. The second part of his History was published also at Paris in 1753 under the title Histoire du peuple de Dieu depuis la naissance du Messie jusqu. la fin de la Synagogue in 1754 plus exacte appeared at Antwerp 8 vols. and in 1755 at Paris still another edition 4 vols. <br><br>The latter contained five questions: <br>1 On Christ the object of scriptures; <br>2 On Christ the Son of God; <br>3 On Christ the Son of Man; <br>4 On Christ the founder of a new religion; <br>5 On the Presentation of Christ in the Temple and the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. <br><br>According to Augustin de Backer this second part of the History was published without the knowledge and against the will of the superiors in the Jesuit house in Paris. Berruyer put his name to only a small number of copies of this publication. The third part titled Histoire du peuple de Dieu ou paraphrase des.tres 2 vols. Lyons 1757 aroused an uproar and some bitter controversy. The freedom with which he described certain facts was considered unbecoming. Serious fault was found with the author for giving to portions of the sacred narrative the air of romance rather than of sober history. <br><br>Some propositions put forward by him were construed as favoring Nestorianism. But above all Berruyer was accused of following the opinions of Jean Hardouin.The work was condemned by many bishops of France by the superiors of the Society by the Sorbonne and by the Parliament of Paris. <br><br>The first part was put on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum 27 May 1732; the second part 3 December 1754 and by a Brief of Benedict XIV 17 February 1758; the third part 24 April 1758 and by and Brief of Clement XIII 2 December 1758. At King Edward VI School where one of the houses is now named 'Watts' in his honour he learned Latin Greek and Hebrew. Watts unable to go to either Oxford or Cambridge due to his Non-conformity went to the Dissenting Academy at Stoke Newington in 1690 and much of his life centred around that village then a rural idyll but now part of Inner London. He died in Stoke Newington and was buried in Bunhill Fields having left behind him a massive legacy not only of hymns but also of treatises educational works essays and the like. His work was influential amongst independents and early religious revivalists in his circle amongst whom was Philip Doddridge who dedicated his best-known work to Watts.
