Crown 8vo 180 x 128mm: 8pp with six color lithographs printed by Emrik & Binger Haarlem each with flaps that when flipped reveal a completely different image a ship at sea becomes Bedouins in the desert a volcano erupts into walruses in the Arctic Native Americans transform into explorers in the Rockies taking the viewer on a tour around the world. The accompanying text guides the reader through these twists and turns. Original burnt orange illustrated card wrappers printed in green gold and terracotta and lettered in black. A superbly preserved example of this fragile production all but pristine rare with Worldcat Discovery listing only one copy and LHD none. For more than 700 years book designers have been pushing back the boundaries of the two-dimensional page adding flaps and rotating parts to enhance the text most often in scientific literature. But only in the nineteenth century did movable flaps became a regular feature in children’s books. In the Netherlands ‘De nieuwe rijschool’ The new riding school published in 1856 was the first movable children’s book which reached their peak in the 1870s and 1880s. Gerardus Theodorus Bom 1814-1884 was a Dutch publisher of books in Amsterdam issuing such titles as Kindervreugd 1864 Robinson Crusoë c.1865 and Kunstenmakers at work 1875. Andriessen's first books were published under the pseudonym Pieter Jacobsz. Under his own name he wrote a series of romantic stories for young people mainly derived from Dutch national history. N. B. Die erste Monographie über dieses Krankheitsbild von Jakob von Heine 1800-1879. "Erst in dieser stark vermehrten zweiten Auflage unter Bekanntgabe von vielen neuen Methoden und Erkenntnissen erhielt dieses klassische Werk den Titel "Spinale Kinderlähmung" da er den Sitz der Krankheit im Rückenmark annahm wenn er sich auch noch nicht auf Sektionsergebnisse stützen konnte. Er teilte das Leiden ein in das akute primäre und das chronische sekundäre Stadium und unterschied sehr wohl die cerebrale spastische Hemiplegie von der spinalen Lähmung die er "Paralysis infantilis spinalis" nannte. Ferner führte er sehr genaue Temperaturmessungen an den verschiedenen Körpergegenden durch und stellte dabei Unterschiede der Hautemperatur zwischen der gesunden und gelähmten Seite fest; auch das Zurückbleiben im Wachstum entging ihm nicht. Ebenso wies er schon auf das epidemische Auftreten hin ferner auf die Kontrakturen und die anderen Fehlstellungen." Second Edition first 1783 of what Simon considers: "An unusually interesting book of dietetics and cookery describing the qualities of every possible kind of food and drink plants fungi animals fats and oils condiments wines and spirits tea coffee . etc." The text is in Latin but the German nomenclature is included. Plenck is probably best remembered for his system of dermatological calssification explained in his Doctrina de morbis cutaneis of 1776 but his talents were extensive as can be witnessed in this less well-known work. The portrait is of Giovanni Alessandro Brambilla to whom the work is dedicated. This work was obviously also found unusually interesting when it was published the second edition appearing just a year after the first and apparently being a direct reprint of the first with just the date changed - in effect a second issue rather than a true second edition. Joseph Jacob von Plenck 1738-1807 war während des 7jährigen Krieges als Regiments-Chirurg tätig. 1770 wurde er Lehrer der theoretischen und praktischer Chirurgie an der neu errichteten Universität Tyrnau ab 1777 in Ofen wo er auch die Fächer Botanik und Chemie lehrte. Gleichzeitig war er Direktor der Feldapotheken und Sekretär der med.-chir. Josephs Akademie in Wien. Plenck war einer der fruchtbarsten medizinischen Schriftsteller seiner Zeit.
